At first glance, triathlon bicycles look like road racing bicycles, simply because the design of these bikes is derived from the original road bike. Triathlon racing is not only a test of speed, but also a test of the rider's stamina endurance. The key to selecting a good triathlon bike though lies in the aero-bars, else known as handlebars in layman terms. These bars are important as it can aid the cyclist in reducing wind resistance, thereby making it that much easier to ride at a faster speed, for a longer duration.
Should You Invest in a Triathlon Bicycle?
Ask any triathlon bicycle professional how much his bike costs, and he'll assure you that just like golf, investing in this sport is definitely not for the poor. However, if you are still on the fence on whether or not you should dedicate a handsome sum of money to this fun sport, we suggest that you try it anyway as any bicycle can be used in a triathlon. As previously mentioned, the road bike is basically the predecessor of the triathlon bicycle. For better performance during the race, we recommend that you opt for the mountain bike instead; especially ones that have been equipped with smooth thread tires.
The Most Important Criteria In Picking A Bicycle
If you've decided on participating in XTERRA triathlons, do make sure to pick a bicycle that is able to endure lake swims, trial rides and trail runs. Triathlons require its riders to pedal long and hard, so do your best to get a bike that is lightweight enough to make the task of pedaling not as difficult. After all, the last thing you would want to is run out of stamina in the middle of a long-distance race. The best way of lightening your bike is most quite simply to build your bike out of light materials. Generally, triathlon bicycles made up of steel is the heaviest and least comfortable. On the other hand, triathlon bicycles made up of carbon fiber is one of the lightest and more comfortable of the lot, albeit also the most expensive.

Triathlon Training
A triathlon is one of the trickiest sports there's, but the sense of accomplishment and accomplishment experienced once you have completed one, far outweighs the time, effort energy and dedication needed for it's preparation. Not to mention the long run gloating rights!

Once all the appliances has been acquired, there is no going back, well there's but the guilt associated with all that equipment rotting away in your garage staring you in the face each time you go to mow the lawn could be overwhelming! So, you have committed. Well, here's a general rundown on the appliances needed.
Generally, players are required to wear a swimming cap provided by the event organizers, they are usually bright in color for safety reasons and can be different colours to signify different categories.
normal wetsuits designed for snorkeling etc won't provide ideal benefits in a triathlon because the sleeves limit the arm movements to stop a comfortable stroke during the swim. They also have longer zippers and can have wrist and ankle zippers to help quicker removal in the transition. Triathlon wetsuit also have a smooth delicate surface to reduce water friction and permit a faster speed through the water.
The obvious main part for the cycle is the bike. The triathlon bike is a variant of the road bike and the most important difference is the addition of tri-bars or aero-bars. Because triathletes cannot draft as can be done in cycling events, aerodynamics plays a giant part in the cycling leg of the triathlon. Frame tubes are oval instead of round and the wheels could have less spokes or maybe be carbon fibre tri spokes or discs.
Tri-bars or aero-bars are handlebars engineered to reduce the wind drag on a cycle rider. They're attached to the handlebars and have rests for the riders forearms while the hands are stretched forward to hold the center bars. This keeps the elbows nearer to the body and lowers the torso to permit for better aerodynamics.
Of course, other equipment required include the cycle helmet, the cycling clothing and triathlon shoes.
Triathlon shoes are similar to cycling shoes in that they have automatic binding cleats that allow them to clip into the pedals. Tri shoes are optimized for this approach in that they could be padded to allow the athlete more comfort while not wearing socks after the swim, they could have holes in them to allow the water from the swim to empty easily, and might have only 1 or 2 Velcro straps instead of three to make allowance for straightforwardness of fastening while cycling.

Aero Bars on mountain bike?

Hey, i have Mountain bike handlebars and am wondering if i can put aero bars on it
sorry if i wasnt clear, but how do i put aeros on it because the lbs said they wouldn't fit mountiain bars
You can absolutely put aero bars on a mountain bike. If you're doing it for comfort, set them up wide and high. If you're doing it for speed, it's just lipstick on a pig.
Handling is much different. Give yourself time to get used to them.
EDIT: Sorry - misunderstood. Clamp size for mountain bars is 25.4mm (1"). If you are using a flat bar, several aero bars will fit VERY CLOSE TO THE STEM (for example, Syntace bars will fit 25.4mm bars). The problem is that mountain bike bars taper, usually to 22.2mm at the ends. If you clamp where the bar starts tapering, it will not work. Riser bars may not have enough space in the 'wide' part of the bar to clamp on aero bars.
EDIT 2: OK, a picture is worth 1000 words. Just do what this guy did (see link).
