Enter the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit U-lock, which features an 18mm hardened Max-Performance steel shackle designed to resist bolt cutters and leverage attacks. Ideal for anyone who lives in moderately high crime areas, the New York Fahgettaboutit boasts a maximum 12 ranking on the Kryptonite 1-12 lock comparison system, which ranks the varying levels of security offered by the company's product range. A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. However, city dwellers demand extreme protection, which is why the New York Fahgettaboutit is built for serious deterrent security. The U-lock also offers such security-enhancing features as a high-security disc-style cylinder; an oversized, hardened steel sleeve over the crossbar for double security; double deadbolt locking for extensive holding power; and a center keyway that defends against leverage attacks. And as a bonus, the lock comes with three keys, one of which is lighted with a high-intensity bulb that makes it easy to unlock the Fahgettaboutit after dark. Other features include a protective vinyl coating, a sliding dust cover that protects and extends the cylinder life, and dimensions of 3.25 by 6 inches. The Legendary Durability of Kryptonite Locks The first big test for Kryptonite locks came in 1972, when Kryptonite founder Michael Zane directed the Second Avenue Bicycle Shop in New York City to lock a three-speed bicycle to a signpost in Greenwich Village. Although thieves immediately stripped all of the bicycle's removable parts, the bicycle itself remained for 30 days and 30 nights. The Kryptonite lock and the bike frame were still in place, even though the lock had been attacked numerous times. The publicity gave Kryptonite the boost it needed and forever changed the face of bicycle security. Twenty-two years later, Kryptonite returned to the streets of the Big Apple to test its latest innovation, the New York lock. In April 1994, the New York Post laid down the ultimate challenge: Could Kryptonite's New York lock last 48 hours on the toughest streets of New York? In a city where more than 100,000 bikes are stolen each year, Kryptonite and the Post locked a brand new, bright green Univega road bike worth $600 to a parking meter in the East Village--the Bermuda Triangle of New York bicycle thievery. For a full 48 hours, the bike remained locked on the corner of Avenue A and 11th Street. Zane and Neil McDaid, director of product development and design for Kryptonite, watched from around the corner as the bike came under every possible means of assault, stumping thieves at every turn. After 48 hours the bike remained intact except for the gear derailleur, which had been stripped off. The lock showed definite signs of abuse, but it had not failed. The New York lock had met the Post's challenge. Not satisfied with the length of the test, Zane moved the bike to SoHo for another six days and, finally, uptown near the Lincoln Center. Even in these high-theft areas the properly locked bike lasted another three weeks before being pulled off the streets by Zane and McDaid. The Post also ran the New York lock through a battery of street tests using common bike theft tools: a 4-foot bolt cutter, a crowbar, and a hammer. The non-Kryptonite locks cracked in seconds, but all methods failed on the New York lock, even the monstrous bolt cutter, which was rendered useless with large dents in its jaws. About Kryptonite In the early 1970s, Michael Zane was a free-spirited, bearded kid with a VW van and a big idea for a new kind of lock. He traveled thousands of miles showing the unique U-shaped locking device and spreading his passion for bicycle security to bike dealers all around the country and forged lifetime relationships. The company soon expanded its product line to include power sports, hardware, and snow sports security. Through innovative product designs, cutting-edge marketing savvy, legendary customer service, and pure fanaticism for security, Kryptonite grew with a cult-like following. In 2001, the company that was started in a VW van was purchased by industry giant Ingersoll Rand and became a flagship brand in the company's Security Technologies sector. Publications such as Bicycling, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, and a host of others continued to tout Kryptonite products as the best on the market. The company's dedication to its customers is best represented by its actions during the fall of 2004, when it was discovered that the industry-standard tubular cylinder could be compromised, at times, with a household item. Kryptonite flew into action, created a voluntary lock exchange program, and replaced more than 400,000 locks in 21 countries for free. In essence, the company redesigned the equivalent of nine years worth of new products in just 10 short months. Kryptonite is the only company in the world that offered such a comprehensive plan to customers, taking its "legendary customer service" pledge to new heights. |

Polar CS600 with Power Cycling Computers W.I.N.D. List Price: $709.95 Sale Price: $560.00 |
|
Designed for demanding cyclists, the Polar CS600 cycling computer enables you to track the most important data from your training rides with wireless sensors. The CS600 incorporates a comprehensive feature set combining measurements for time, speed, distance, altitude, and incline as well as cadence (with optional sensor). You can prepare a detailed training program with the included Polar ProTrainer 5 software (for Windows). It also comes with the Polar Power Sensor W.I.N.D. wireless transmitter, which offers 2.4 GHz disturbance-free transmission and an aerodynamic design (another version of the CS600 excludes the W.I.N.D. transmitter). The Polar Power Sensor W.I.N.D. contains different measuring features providing information on how the cyclist works with the bike and allowing you to control the intensity of exercise. The Polar Power Sensor W.I.N.D. gives all information in one device only, combining heart rate monitoring and power output measurement. Together with the Polar CS600, the Power Output Sensor W.I.N.D. measures the actual, average and maximum power values. With the Power Output Sensor W.I.N.D., you can analyze the L/R balance (balance between left and right foot) and Pedaling Index (shows how evenly the power is distributed during one crankarm rotation). The Power Output Sensor W.I.N.D. also measures cycling speed, distance and cadence. You can easily download the data to the Polar ProTrainer 5 professional training software for further analysis. Features include: Polar W.I.N.D transmission technology (included): 2.4 GHz coded transmission for disturbance-free connections from wireless speed, cadence and power sensors and WearLink heart rate transmitter. Large customizable display showing four separate elements of information. Two timeline trend graphs can be displayed simultaneously providing "at-a-glance" feedback during exercise. Smooth and aerodynamic case design made from tough reinforced polycarbonates for maximum durability. Polar OwnIndex Fitness Test calculates aerobic fitness (comparable to maximal oxygen uptake, VO2max) providing a reference to base training intensity and measure improvement. Target heart rate zones with visual and audible alarms (three each) Graphical comparison of heart rate and speed Heart rate measurements: maximum of total and each lap, average of total Automatic lap recording (up to 99 laps) with exercise date Exercise file info page with date and time Semi-automatic backlighting Water resistance to 10 meters (protects against rain and splashes) Polar OwnOptimizer: Shows the status of training load to help you find the perfect balance between training and recovery. Cycling Efficiency Index: Improvement in cycling efficiency (your energy expenditure converted into the power that propels the bike forward) indicates improved economy of cycling performance. Incline Measurement: Provides uphill or downhill steepness in percentages and grades calculated from altimeter data. Numerical information helps you to track your cycling effort accordingly. SpeedPointer: Points out the difference between average speed/pace and actual speed/pace on the display by up/down arrows. Estimated Time of Arrival: Set the distance you are going to ride, and your cycling computer calculates the estimated time of arrival based on your cycling speed. Polar OwnCal: Shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. Because the OwnCal tracks both the energy expenditure during one exercise session and the accumulated kilocalories during a longer time e.g. one week, it helps in achieving both short term and long term goals. Cycling Economy/Intensity: Enables you to foresee your calorie expenditure and secure sufficient intake on a long ride. This feature is also useful for comparing and analyzing the loads of various training types. About Polar The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise. Wireless Polar speed sensor W.I.N.D. New advanced sensor measuring the cycling speed. Wireless Cadence sensor W.I.N.D. optional Includes New Power sensor set - W.I.N.D. Cycling Limits Cycling limits can be set for heart rate, cadence or power output. Incline Measurement Measures incline with uphill or downhill steepness in percentage or grades. Cycling Economy Tracks the cycling workload as kcal/h and kcal/km. Polar Sport Zones Helps you to train at the right intensity. Zone Lock Simply the easiest way to set a target zone. R-R Intervals / Online HR Variability Measures heart beat intervals and reflects autonomic nervous system in heartbeat regulation. Polar OwnOptimizer Train and rest in the right balance. Polar OwnOptimizer test tells you whether you have recovered enough for your next training session. |

If you are a cyclist, then you know how hard our chain rings are working for us. Each time we pedal to make those strokes that propels the bike forward, the chain works continuously in high tension. Mainly, the chain is primarily the essential component for a bicycle drive train.
Understanding your bike chain
You have to know that they do wear out over time. As it is a mechanical component, you have to maintain them. There are 3 parts of the chains, namely the inner plate, chain pin and outer plate. The pin is responsible for attaching the inner and outer plates in place, forming a long chain.
Other than delivering motion for the front and back motion, it also has its sideway movements. This is also known as lateral movement. Lateral movement is necessary for you to change gears. After prolonged usage, the chain will elongate. With higher elongation, its lateral movements also increase (affecting gear shifting).
How to prolong your chain's life
You have to clean your bike chain regularly. Of course, this depends on where you ride your bikes. Generally, mountain bikers will need to clean their chain more often. Use a scrub brush and water mixed with dish soap (or bio-degreaser). Switch gears so that the chain wraps the biggest gear in front (sprocket with most teeth). Position your brush at the bottom part of the chain while pedaling backwards with your hand. For stubborn dirt, use a screwdriver to prod it out.
However, you also need to make sure the sprocket the chain runs on is clean. Therefore, use a toothbrush to clean the teeth of the sprocket.
After you are done with cleaning your chain and sprocket teeth, you should always dry them with a cloth or rag. This keeps moisture out. In most cases, the chain and sprocket is made from steel. Keeping the moisture out will prevent rust.
How and when you should lubricate your chain?
Lubrication is key. Lubrication can prevent rust and other dirt problems.
But only lubricate a clean chain. There is no point in lubricating a dirty chain. At least, do a quick wipe before lubricating it, if you cannot afford a full cleaning session. Experienced riders like to lube their chain one night before heading out for rides.
Position the lube on the inner side of the chain and pedal backwards slowly. Make sure each roller gets lubricated. During the next morning, you should wipe off any excess from the outer plates.
Generally, you would want to get a wet lubricant. This is especially true if you need to use your bike for a very long duration or muddy conditions. As for dry lubricants, they tend to flake off with usage and do not stay as long as wet lubes. Therefore, dry lubes are only suitable for dusty environments. This is because dry lubes and dust do not mix together.

Select The Right Mountain Biking Shoes For A Powerful Ride
To enjoy mountain biking to the utmost, you will need to invest in a pair of mountain bike shoes. No matter what your mountain biking experience, the right pair of shoes can help you to ride safe, more comfortably, and more efficiently. Clipless pedals are a normal design for mountain bike shoes, but you will find that the shoes can be used with toe clips and standard pedals, too.
The first mountain bikes did not have clipless pedals, which made it very difficult to get their feet out of the toe-clips if they needed to. It made it very unsafe, because the rider was sometimes forced to go down with his mountain bike when it wrecked. When clipless pedals were invented, it made mountain biking safer. Riders can easily twist their foot out of the pedal or if there is sufficient force, the shoe and pedal will come apart without having to twist the foot.
If you ride just for fun and your bike is without the clipless pedals, then you will want to find mountain bike shoes that are compatible with Shimano Pedaling Dynamics (SPD) anyway. All you will have to do is leave the cover intact over when the cleats attach. This will give you the opportunity to go clipless later if you so desire. If you do have pedals that are clipless, then you will want to ensure that the mountain bike shoes that you choose work with your particular pedals.
Mountain bike shoes should not have laces that can become wrapped up in the bike chain, should allow extra room for swelling feet, and, most importantly, they should be comfortable. If you want more pedaling power, then you will want to choose mountain bike shoes with a stiffer sole. If you think that you will be walking a great deal in your mountain bike shoes, then you will want to choose a more flexible sole. If you are not sure which mountain bike shoes are best for you, then ask for help at your local bike shop or a reputable online bicycle store.
In the world of cycling, you will find that there are specific manufacturers that are good at a specific area of cycling. Other sporting goods manufacturers try to be good at many different types of merchandise, but cycling manufacturers usually concentrate and focus on a specific area of cycling. They try to make the best version of that particular item as possible. One example of this is Fox clothing. They are well-known for their cycling clothing for both men and women.
With all of the different kinds of cycling that you can do, you will find that there are also different kinds of bikes for each of these. A cross-country bike will be differently designed than a mountain bike, for example. This also is true in bicycling clothing. Fox clothing makes all different kinds of cycling clothing, from the looser fitting jerseys and shorts to closer fitting clothing that is more aerodynamically designed. If you take occasional falls when you are biking, then you may want to choose loose fitting apparel to help give yourself some cushioning when you fall.

How can I shorten a bike chain without having the chain remover/extractor/splitter tool?
I have a heavy bicycle chain that I need to shorten in order for it to fit on my new sprocket. I have disconnected the master link but I need to remove several links in order for it to fit properly. I do not have chain splitter tool and I notice they no longer sell these things in your average department store. Is there a way to remove chain links without it without damaging the integrity of the chain itself? Thanks so much in advance for anyone with any kind of an answer.
When I was a lot younger, I have used a hammer and punch to split a chain, but now I'd only do it that way in an absolute emergency.
All cycle stores should have chain splitting tools in stock, and I've attached a link to a company that sells them, and will dispatch world wide.
If you really don't want to get one, I'm sure your local cycle store would do it for a minimal fee.
