Big city cyclists need big city protection, as would-be thieves aren't intimidated by just any bicycle lock. Enter the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit U-lock, which features an 18mm hardened Max-Performance steel shackle designed to resist bolt cutters and leverage attacks. Ideal for anyone who lives in moderately high crime areas, the New York Fahgettaboutit boasts a maximum 12 ranking on the Kryptonite 1-12 lock comparison system, which ranks the varying levels of security offered by the company's product range. A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. However, city dwellers demand extreme protection, which is why the New York Fahgettaboutit is built for serious deterrent security. The U-lock also offers such security-enhancing features as a high-security disc-style cylinder; an oversized, hardened steel sleeve over the crossbar for double security; double deadbolt locking for extensive holding power; and a center keyway that defends against leverage attacks. And as a bonus, the lock comes with three keys, one of which is lighted with a high-intensity bulb that makes it easy to unlock the Fahgettaboutit after dark. Other features include a protective vinyl coating, a sliding dust cover that protects and extends the cylinder life, and dimensions of 3.25 by 6 inches. The Legendary Durability of Kryptonite Locks The first big test for Kryptonite locks came in 1972, when Kryptonite founder Michael Zane directed the Second Avenue Bicycle Shop in New York City to lock a three-speed bicycle to a signpost in Greenwich Village. Although thieves immediately stripped all of the bicycle's removable parts, the bicycle itself remained for 30 days and 30 nights. The Kryptonite lock and the bike frame were still in place, even though the lock had been attacked numerous times. The publicity gave Kryptonite the boost it needed and forever changed the face of bicycle security. Twenty-two years later, Kryptonite returned to the streets of the Big Apple to test its latest innovation, the New York lock. In April 1994, the New York Post laid down the ultimate challenge: Could Kryptonite's New York lock last 48 hours on the toughest streets of New York? In a city where more than 100,000 bikes are stolen each year, Kryptonite and the Post locked a brand new, bright green Univega road bike worth $600 to a parking meter in the East Village--the Bermuda Triangle of New York bicycle thievery. For a full 48 hours, the bike remained locked on the corner of Avenue A and 11th Street. Zane and Neil McDaid, director of product development and design for Kryptonite, watched from around the corner as the bike came under every possible means of assault, stumping thieves at every turn. After 48 hours the bike remained intact except for the gear derailleur, which had been stripped off. The lock showed definite signs of abuse, but it had not failed. The New York lock had met the Post's challenge. Not satisfied with the length of the test, Zane moved the bike to SoHo for another six days and, finally, uptown near the Lincoln Center. Even in these high-theft areas the properly locked bike lasted another three weeks before being pulled off the streets by Zane and McDaid. The Post also ran the New York lock through a battery of street tests using common bike theft tools: a 4-foot bolt cutter, a crowbar, and a hammer. The non-Kryptonite locks cracked in seconds, but all methods failed on the New York lock, even the monstrous bolt cutter, which was rendered useless with large dents in its jaws. About Kryptonite In the early 1970s, Michael Zane was a free-spirited, bearded kid with a VW van and a big idea for a new kind of lock. He traveled thousands of miles showing the unique U-shaped locking device and spreading his passion for bicycle security to bike dealers all around the country and forged lifetime relationships. The company soon expanded its product line to include power sports, hardware, and snow sports security. Through innovative product designs, cutting-edge marketing savvy, legendary customer service, and pure fanaticism for security, Kryptonite grew with a cult-like following. In 2001, the company that was started in a VW van was purchased by industry giant Ingersoll Rand and became a flagship brand in the company's Security Technologies sector. Publications such as Bicycling, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, and a host of others continued to tout Kryptonite products as the best on the market. The company's dedication to its customers is best represented by its actions during the fall of 2004, when it was discovered that the industry-standard tubular cylinder could be compromised, at times, with a household item. Kryptonite flew into action, created a voluntary lock exchange program, and replaced more than 400,000 locks in 21 countries for free. In essence, the company redesigned the equivalent of nine years worth of new products in just 10 short months. Kryptonite is the only company in the world that offered such a comprehensive plan to customers, taking its "legendary customer service" pledge to new heights.

Bicycling is an activity with some inherent risks and essentially there two ways to to become a safer bicyclist. One thing that stands out is that even with improved facilities 60% of all bicycle crashes are from an error caused by bicyclists. One thing I have always said is that we can build safe roads and bicycle facilities but, if people don't know how to use them they won't be safe. Knowing where and how the common crashes happen and you can avoid serious injury."- Mark Horowitz League Cycling Instructor #371During this two and half hour course you will learn: how to select and fit your bike, safely ride in and around traffic, basic maintenance, roadside repairs, how to choose the best position on the road, crash avoidance techniques and more.Reviews"I am enjoying the course so far and my wife is looking forward to the reading and viewing the material next. We are getting into riding for the health benefits and have been away from our bikes for a few years other than some occasional riding over the past several years. Like many people I can honestly say we where never taught proper riding techniques so we decided it was time to learn things the right way." Tom G. MA"Mark, the DVD & the on line test where great. After many miles and hazards along the way you have pointed me in a simple common sense direction. Hope that all folks needing a basic course will start with you. As most things are common sense you have pointed out the uncommon. Tailwinds to you. Your production skills on a roadway are unmatched." ThanksRobert C. List Price: $7.99

This bike safety film, set in the early sixties suburbia, brings back memories for those who grew up with Schwinn bicycles. The film goes over the basic rules of bike maintenance, proper equipment, and the rules for riding on the roads along side traffic. In the (not so true) world of this film, kids spend hours on bike maintenance, respect the rules of the road, and always yield to pedestrians. But this is a reflection of the conservative mentality in the 1960s, and thus provides historical insight. Bicycle Today, Automobile Tomorrow is a no-nonsense film that provides timeless tips on safe riding.

Bicycle Bike Safety

Riding a bicycle at night is a lot more dangerous than riding during the day. Most bicycles are equipped for daylight riding, but need to be adapted for night time use. Apart from the fact that your ability to see is going to be diminished, a cyclist is very difficult for motorists and pedestrians to see. When traveling at night you are likely only going to able to see a few feet in front of you. Even with a good set of lights, seeing can be difficult. Passing cars will also have a harder time seeing you when you decide to ride at night. And when riding in the dark, you need to be aware of people and/or animals that could be sharing the road with you. Personal safety is vital and you need to be prepared for whatever might come your way.

It is highly advisable that children should never ride at dawn, at dusk or at night. Adults who chose to accept the greatly increased risk of riding at dawn, at dusk or at night need to take extra care both riding and choosing specialized equipment which helps reduce that risk.

Your bicycle should be equipped with rear and pedal reflectors. In addition, the bike should have side reflectors or reflective tire sidewalls. Bicycle reflectors are designed to pick up and reflect street lights and car lights in a way that may help you to be seen and recognized as a moving bicyclist. Check reflectors and their mounting brackets regularly to make sure that they are clean, straight, unbroken and securely mounted. Do not remove the front or rear reflectors or reflector brackets from your bicycle. They are an integral part of the bicycle's safety system. Bear in mind that bike reflectors are not a substitute for required lights. If you're planning to ride at night, you must also have a white light installed in front and in the rear.

If you choose to ride under conditions of poor visibility, check and be sure you comply with all local laws about night riding, and take the following strongly recommended additional precautions:

- Wear clothes that make you more visible. Wearing neon, fluorescent or other bright colors helps you be easily seen by motorists. Items such as a reflective vest, reflective arm and leg bands, reflective stripes on your helmet, flashing lights attached to your body and/or your bicycle all work well. In fact, any reflective device or light source that moves will help you get the attention of approaching motorists, pedestrians and other traffic.

- Purchase and install a battery or generator powered head and tail lights which meet all regulatory requirements and provide adequate visibility.

- Make sure your clothing or anything you may be carrying on the bicycle does not obstruct a reflector or light.

- Ride slowly. Stay alert at all times. Look out for hazardous surfaces or obstacles in your path, such as potholes, loose gravel, manhole covers, cracks, railroad tracks, or wet leaves.

- Avoid dark areas and areas of heavy or fast-moving traffic. If possible, ride on familiar routes. Streets with bright lighting are best.

- Avoid road hazards. Be alert. Ride defensively and expect the unexpected. If riding in traffic, be predictable. Ride so that drivers can see you and predict your movements. Always assume that a driver does not see you.

Exercise Safety Tips For Kids

Exercise is one of the keys to good health and good body. This is the reason why wellness experts and even medical authorities recommend exercising. There are many benefits that you can get when you exercise; a few to mention are toned muscles and increase circulation of the blood in the body. However, exercise activities like any other activities should be done with safety precautions. Approximately more than 3 million kids experience injuries when exercising. These exercise activities vary from stretching to outdoor activities like running and bike riding. In order to avoid injuries and have healthy body, here are some exercise safety tips for kids that can serve as guide when exercising or involving in any form of rigorous exercise.

Running exercise safety tip for kids. This is one of the most important exercise safety tips for kid. Kids or anybody of any age should not just run to start the activity. Prior to running, the body must be warm-up and stretching exercises should be performed. This is to prepare the body for the physical activity. Likewise, kids should also cool down after each activity.

Riding the bicycle. Bike riding is one of the most favorite activities of the kids to exercise. Not only you do exercise but you also enjoy the activity while you travel from one place to another. Yet, riding the bicycle should be done properly. Wearing elbow and knee pads, and a helmet will protect the kids against potential injuries if kids accidentally fall off or have collision.

Engaging in sports. All sports have their own safety measures. This ranges from the gears that should be worn to the type of equipment that should be used. As one of the exercise safety tips for kids, it is essential that proper gear should be worn. Correct clothing such as helmets and knee and elbow pads will be able to minimize the damage caused by the accident. Aside from the gears, the equipment utilized should also be inspected especially in the parks like swings, monkey bars, teeter-totters, and other stationary equipments which kids frequently uses.

Watch out for dehydration. It is important that when exercising, drinking water should be prioritized. When kids exercise, kids also sweat a lot. It is necessary that lost body fluid are replenished accordingly.

Check the health of the kid. This is another of the most important exercise safety tips for kid. There are some kids that are limited in physical activities due to their health limitations. It is necessary that a doctor or physician must be consulted before allowing the kids to join sports or any physical activities. Among the diseases that may impede the kids into exercise activities are asthma, allergies and heart problems.

Supervision of the kids. Kids should be supervised in their physical activities; whether exercises or plainly playing at the playground. This will make assistance on hand to them in case of injuries. Moreover, the presence of sports doctor will be very great.

Exercising is one of the fun activities kids can engage with. However, there are some situations that kids may tend to overlook potential hazards and dangers ahead of them, therefore it is highly important that these kids are supervised and knowledgeable how to protect themselves against injuries.
Armed with these exercise safety tips for kids, you can assure that kids are safe and at the same time have healthy bodies.

Bicycle Safety?

In the evening I ride my bike to work to save gas, I ride my bike as close to the curb as i can, but cars still keep blowing their horn at me and yelling mean things out the window. So I ride my bike on the side walk and than I almost get hit by a car making a turn when I cross from one side walk to the other. I just got a bike its a 21 gear Specialized Cross Roads that I bought used for $100 but I have know idea how to shift gears, any help would be appreaciated

I feel for you my friend.

Having ridden my bike to work for almost twenty years and been a serious cyclist for longer than that here is some advice:

Look for a route that has low traffic intensity. This route may be a little longer, but give you a more happier experience going to work. Save the large arterial street for when you are running late. A lot of cyclists think you should ride your bike exactly like a car, but I think that just asking for a visit the emergency room due to a careless driver. Use the road/sidewalk/bike paths/gutter to your best advantage and plan out your moves. All traffic has a pattern to it. Try to discover the pattern and ride with it.

There are special challenges going through busy intersections on a bike that are not applicable to cars. In your head try to plan how you are going to cross each major road. At intersections think like a car, and try to predict what the cars are going to do. (Who is not going to stop to turn right on red, who is turning left and looking for the smallest opening to zip across. etc.) Right turning and left turning cars are looking for openings in traffic and tend not to see bicyclists. Never assume that they see you, and ignore all the "make eye contact with the driver advice" because today it doesn't mean that they actually see you as drivers are so distracted they will still pull out right in front of you even as they are staring right at you.

The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) vehicular-cycling principle is based on John Foresters 1975 book "Effective Cycling". An excellent place for a beginner to start. However, the vehicular approach has big problem on today's roads. It exposes you to driver error (and they make a lot of errors). There are nearly 2-3x as many cars on the road as there were in the 70's when "Effective Cycling" was written and drivers are more aggressive and more distracted than ever. I don't know anybody (including the local LAB chapter president) who actually follows the principle to the letter. Almost all experienced cyclists use a mix of techniques to stay safe in heavy city traffic.
