Road bikes are one of the oldest and most popular types of bike. They are sturdy, lightweight and built ultimately for speed. These bikes have been around for decades. If you browse online, you can find a lot of vintage bikes and even discount road bikes which are also starting to gain its own popularity.
Road bicycles are also known as a racing bicycles. Weight and stiffness are their distinguished characteristics. These two greatly determine the efficiency at which the power of the rider's pedal can be transferred to its wheels. Taking this in mind, most road bicycles sacrifice comfort for speed. They have drop handlebars which are positioned lower than the saddle (or bike seat) to create an aerodynamic posture. The gear ratios are also closely spaced enabling its rider to pedal according to their own rhythm.
Features
Tires. Road bicycles are fast because they run on thin tires. These tires are kept as thin as possible to keep the drag to a minimum with very minimal effort. This is also the reason why road bikes are not advised for beginners because friction is lessened (with thin tires) thus, the stability of the bike should be very well scanned. They are less steady and compared to mountain bikes, cannot be run on rough terrain.
Handlebars. Modern innovations in design and technology for the last decades have involved transformation of road bicycles to very swift bikes. Handlebars used are have special curved handles and are usually lower than the saddle so that the rider's posture will be more aerodynamic, a low and smooth riding stance, thus, producing more speed.
Gearing system. Modern ones have triple chain rings at the front and 10 rings on the rear wheel. This gearing system permits its rider to bike steep hills and twisting roads with more ease and convenience without sacrificing speed. There have been recent advancements like integrated brake levers and gear shifters allowing bikers to change shift and pull the brakes at the same time with very minimal movement.
The advancements in modern road bicycles have caused its price to rise. But thanks to the effort of online retailers, you can find a lot of discount road bikes online. These discount road bikes are full-pledged road bicycles at a very affordable price. The distinguishing features mentioned in this article can be found on discount road bikes and they are just as fast, sturdy and lightweight as other expensive ones.
Having written extensively for more more than 8 years on road bikes, Brandy has dedicated a lot of time to writing about the best way to find discount road bikes.
Major Bicycle Parts
Bicycle is one of the oldest vehicles used by man. It consists of a light casing built over two wheels (one following the other, with each of them being pierced with wire), a seat, handlebars (which are counterpart of steering wheel), brakes, and a couple of pedals or a small motor to propel the bicycle. To know and learn about a bicycle, one needs to understand the basic bicycle parts as they work in combination -
Brake - They are used to speed down the bicycle. They can be controlled by brake levers that are mounted on the handlebars (as is the case with disc brakes and rim brakes) or they can be functioned by backward pedaling (as is the case with coaster brakes).
Handlebar - This is the part where a rider places his hands to provide balance to the bike. It can be straight, cylindrical or curved. It has a handle at each end, each of which is fitted with grips to provide firm hold of the bar. It also helps in steering the bike by providing the necessary leverage. Latest handlebars also enable the biker to change body stance during a long ride.
Chain - It provides the propelling action in the bike by transferring power from the pedals to the wheels. Chains have increased biker safety by allowing the manufacturers to cut down on the wheel size. Recently, breakthroughs have been made to have chains that could provide gearing mechanism to the bikes. In order to achieve good speed, one needs to lubricate bicycle chain from time to time, or else they get rusted.
Wheel - Bicycles ride on wheels. The wheel pair consists of an outer rim that is connected to the central focal point using spokes. A nut is used to tighten the spokes at both ends.
Tire - It covers the outer circumference of the bicycle wheel and is inflated with air. Because of its shape (usually circular) and air filled inside, it allows the bike to sail. Right amount of air needs to be filled inside the tire so that it provides optimum friction to the ground, thereby transmitting maximum speed from the pedal to the wheel.
In order to buy and maintain a good bicycle, a person needs to understand what each bicycle part does. Although they might seem trivial when seen separately, but when running in combination, they produce a thrill and experience, one cannot afford to miss.

What do you call this type of air control valve?
I am looking for a valve to control pressurized air, up to 120 psi or so.
I don't want just on/off. I want to be able to squeeze a lever and have the valve allow a proportional amount of the air pressure through. A small squeeze -> a little pressure. A big squeeze -> a lot of pressure.
I am using it to control a pneumatic cylinder that drives an extruder. I want to be able to control the rate of extrusion by how hard I squeeze on a control lever (sort of like the brake lever on a bicycle).
What is this type of valve called?
Are there any that are already set up for hand control or will I have to work that part out myself?
this is called a "servo-valve" . whether its pneumatic or hydraulic, you still want to use a double spool type.
there should be plenty available on the web.
look for pneumatic servovalves. (they may not be cheap)
