I'm pushing 40 and have never owned a car. For me the bike has always been my main mode of transportation. I didn't start out to be an bicycle evangelist but just kind of grew into the role. I see the bike as a tool to change the world. It doesn't pollute, it reduces traffic congestion, it's cheap and it's good for you.
As a kid riding my bike was freedom and I guess it still is. On a bike I'm not constrained by long line ups of traffic. No matter how busy the roads are I've never experience stop and go in the bike lane. On a bike you can take short cuts through the park or a trail that isn't open to cars. When I talk to people about commuting by bike they say the car is faster. Depending on where you are riding, this may be true but time in a car is not productive. If you are riding in a city core you will often be faster on a bike plus you don't have to find a place to park. Every street is littered with options to lock up your bike.
When you ride instead of drive you get to know you town a lot better. Exploring back streets and bike only routes lets you learn the inner character of a place you never get to know in a car. And on a bike you see so much more. I've found little mom and pop restaurants on my trips that I didn't even know existed. When you stick to the main drags there is so much you will never know about.
If you are a two car family you can save around $5000 per year by ditching one car. The cost of the car, gas, insurance and maintenance really adds up. With a bike you have to lube your chain and get a tune every now and again but the costs are so much lower that one year of commuting will pay for a nice vacation.
When I'm on my bike I'm happy even if it takes a few minutes more. When I'm too busy to workout, I get a couple doses of exercise every day with the ride to and from work.
It's in you to become a better cyclist. Helping you get there is my goal. Equipment, riding skills, fitness and nutrition all have to be dialed in to reach your potential. To take your next step on that journey visit http://www.cyclecambridge.com.
Is A Fixed Gear Bike Right For You?
A fixed gear bike is bike whose socket is screwed directly onto the hub. In other words, there is no freewheel which would allow the bike to coast while the pedals are not moving. A fixed gear bike will cease to move if the rider stops pedaling. Conversely, if the wheels are turning, the pedals are moving. These bikes have specific advantages and disadvantages, depending on the kind of bicycling the rider wishes to do.
Gears
Generally speaking, a fixed gear bike is a single speed bike. There is an exception, but not in the traditional sense. Some fixed gear bikes have a cog on either side of the wheel, allowing the rider a choice of two speed ratio; however, the rider may not shift speeds while riding. The hub, known as a flip flop hub, will have a fixed wheel cog on either side of the wheel, or a fixed wheel cog on one side and a freewheel cog on the other. In either case, the rider must manually remove, reverse, and replace the rear wheel in order to change the speed ratio of the cycle.
Uses
Track bikes used in indoor bicycle tracks, called velodromes, are fixed gear bikes. Cycle ball, bike polo, and artistic cycling are also fixed gear bike sports. The fixed gear bike is ideal for track stands; these are tricks in which the bike remains stationary, while the rider balances it upright, with his feet in the pedals.
Many young children's bikes are fixed gear bikes, as are BMX bikes. The popularity of the fixed gear bike has grown recently for use in commuting to school and work, under circumstances in which the terrain will remain constant and there are very few environmental challenges.
Advantages
A rider may choose a fixed gear bike for a number of reasons. First, they are generally light weight bicycles. Commuters often need to carry their bikes inside their office buildings, or up or down a flight of stairs. There are fixed gear bicycles that weigh as little as 23 pounds.
Because the construction of the fixed gear bike is much simpler, maintenance is simpler as well. The brake systems demand fewer parts, and there is only one gear. Fewer repairs equate to less money spent and more time on the bike.
Performance, although hampered in some ways, improves in wet conditions because feedback to the rear brake from the pedals encourages better grip on the road and better response to the conditions. This also is an advantage to a commuter, because weather can be unpredictable and safety may be better ensured with this bicycle.
Disadvantages
Without the ability to coast, the rider has little or no opportunity to rest on long rides; additionally, if the rider must rest, the bike will stop, potentially leading to loss of control of the bicycle. Novice riders of fixed gear bikes will also have difficulty in turning at higher speeds, as the rider does not have the opportunity, afforded by freewheel bikes, to equalize their pedal height during these turns. As a result, the pedal may touch the ground, possibly leading to loss of control.

Does anyone know if Fixed Gear bicycle wheels can work on geared road bikes?
Im want to purchase a fixed gear wheel for style but I have a geared bike so im wondering if i can still use it. Or is fixed gear wheels only for fixed gear bikes?
One thing to consider is the distance between the outside of the lock nuts. Traditional fixed wheel bikes have this size at 120mm. If your frame has this dimension then, allowing for chain line, a fixed wheel will fit into your machine.
If the frame is made of half decent steel, the rear drop outs can be cold set. Make sure that the drop outs remain square.
Talking of drop outs, you will need at least semi vertical drop outs so that chain adjustments can be made. Traditional fixed wheel bikes have track ends that are horizontal 'drop outs'.
You can't use a chain tensioner with a fixed wheel bike.
You will also need a single chain ring. These can be converted from a multi geared chain set and I would advise the purchase of suitable chain ring bolts for a single chain ring.
Chain line is very very important. It will probably involve a different sized bottom bracket and or chain ring spacers.
Don't do it for style as you probably won't enjoy it. Fixed wheel riding is a totally different way of riding a bike that uses different skills and a different mind set.
