During our stay in Kovalam Beach, India, I always wondered what happened to our laundry after the laundry wallah pedaled it away on his bicycle, balancing the basket of laundry on his head. It really did not seem likely that there were any washing machines around at that time (though there may be now), and so I wondered how the clothes always came back smelling so fresh and clean of any speck.
One day I happened to be taking a walk around the interior of Kovalam Beach, and had tea and fruit at several villages along the way. I was a young man at the time and rather embarrassed by the high school girls poking their heads out the huts windows and pointing and giggling at me. Their elders would scold them and their pretty black braids and flashing white teeth would disappear- but only for a few minutes.
On the way back I crossed a bridge over a beautiful blue stream and there I saw the wallah! Well, not actually the wallah himself but about a half dozen women and several dozen baskets. So this is how they did laundry- they simply whacked it to death against the river rocks. Apparently they used no soap- just river water and stone. With rippling muscles they would smack each garment against the rocks a good ten times and inspect it to see if it was clean. If it was, they hung it up on the higher rocks to dry in the sun. If it wasn't they whacked it some more until it got clean. Well, they get it clean all right, I thought. But I don't know if my shirts could stand more than two weeks of that abuse.

Bicycle Baskets
As the use for bicycles has become more popular as a gas saving transportation device the demand for different types of bicycle baskets has also grown. Bicycle baskets have traditionally been used for children's bicycles as an accessories and as part of the structure of three wheel bicycles used by older people. Now there is a wide range of bicycle baskets that are designed to meet the needs of any cyclist.
When bicycles are used as the main mode of transportation for an individual they need a bicycle basket that will accommodate their daily needs. For individuals who bike to work the bicycle basket must be able to hold a briefcase, purse, bag, and/or lunch. These baskets historically rested on the handlebars of the bicycle however in recent years there has been an upsurge in the placement of the bicycle basket on the rear of the bike so that it is does not impede steering the bike and items do not fall out when making sharp turns with the handlebars of the bicycle.
Three wheel bicycles are ideal for bicycle baskets because they are usually build to accommodate individuals who carry groceries or other large parcels in them. These bikes have baskets that span between the two rear wheels and are often deep enough to carry large parcels and packages. Since the rear wheels of a three wheel bike provide stability it is very rare that items dislodge from the basket.
A growing trend is the use of bicycle baskets on sports bikes which have hooks on them that attach to the handlebars of the bike. These baskets are designed in an array of shapes, sizes, and textures, and can be purchased to reflect the personality of the person using them. There are sport bicycle baskets which are made of wicker and look like a regular basket but hang from the handlebars of the bike on hooks that are embedded into the side of the basket. These baskets are not made to carry a lot of weight or a sizeable package, however are great for water bottles, power drinks, or other sports snacks that are needed for long distance bike rides.
When selecting a bicycle basket it is important that one decide what the primary use of the basket will be and how their bike is equipped to support the basket. Many bikes that are designed for trick riding are not appropriate for bicycle baskets and the goods placed in a basket on this bike could easily be damaged or broken. But a bicycle that is designed for daily, regular use will usually accommodate a bicycle basket very well.
When a person is going to use their bike as their primary mode of transportation and will be carrying groceries or other heavy items in the basket then a person may want to consider the purchase of a three wheel bike. A three wheel bike will provide support for the size of bicycle basket that is needed as well as a more comfortable ride for the biker.

Any suggestions for a bicycle cup holder?
I'd like to attach a cup holder (and/or possibly a small basket to hold things like fast food bags) to the front of my bike. I'm willing to spend up to $20, but less would definitely be better! Any suggestions?
I've already tried a Google search, and didn't get much. I'm looking for someone who has maybe done this themselves or knows someone who has done it. (or if you've randomly stumbled across something on the internet that works too!)
Oh, and the bike is going to be outside all the time (bike racks outside my dorm), so I need something that won't deteriorate due to water or cold or things like that.
Local bike shops will have a variety of baskets, and can help you ensure that the basket will fit on your bike. A rack on the back may be another option. Weight on the front will make it more difficult to steer.
As for a cupholder, my thought is it's pointless. One bump in the pavement and you'd lose whatever is in there. Waterbottle cages are better for holding things. I've used mine to carry everything from water bottles during races, a travel mug full of tea in the morning, and a scoop of ice cream (thank god for that bubble-shaped top) after nannying.
