1. Material:
Mountain bikes are available in a variety of materials, ranging from aluminium to titanium, steel to carbon fibre. And as you might guess, the properties of the material dictate the price tag. Ideally, you'll want the material to be lightweight yet durable. This will provide the best biking performance while protecting your bike's frame from the rigours of off-road riding. However, most of us don't have deep enough pockets to afford top-of-the-range materials such as carbon fibre and titanium. However, you can still find some quality bikes which won't break the bank.
2. Comfort:
This aspect of mountain bikes is one which you cannot truly know about unless you test ride the bike. Some online retailers offer 30-day test rides which allow you to take the bike for a spin and return it with a full refund if you decide it's not the bike for you. Different bikes provide different feels and different forms of comfort, so you'll need to determine if a certain model is right for you by trying before buying.
3. Components:
These include any part of the bike which can be detached from the frame such as the brakes, pedals and wheels. Learn some basic information about the different types of components on different bikes and it'll help you to determine which bike is right for you and your budget.
4. Size:
When choosing a bike, it is vital to get the right size frame. Mountain bike frames are usually measured in inches. To help gauge an appropriate size, stand flat footed over a mountain bike, forward of the saddle. You should have at least two inches clearance between the top tube of the frame and your crotch area. Then when seated, prop yourself against a wall and set the saddle at a height that leaves your leg locked out when resting the heel of your foot on the pedal when it is set at the lowest point on the pedal revolution (six o'clock on a clock face). When your leg is straight in this position, move your foot back on the pedal to the correct pedal position (the ball of your foot). You will then have the optimum amount of knee bend. Your seatpost should not have reached the maximum extension mark. As a rough guide, someone who is 5ft 10" would look to ride a 17"-18" frame depending on leg length and manufacturer.
5. Price:
The price tag of bicycles can vary hugely and this is due to various factors including the brand, materials and components used. Before you start shopping for your bike, it's crucial that you set a budget. Determine how much you can realistically afford to spend. Taking these steps will help you to be disciplined when searching for a good bike at a low price.
6. Brand:
Every brand is different and what one rider loves about one brand, the next rider might not. Bike manufacturers differ in their approach to design, craftsmanship, materials and components so take time to do your homework before you start shopping for a bike. You might discover that you generally prefer the models of one mountain bike manufacturer over another and this will help refine your search.
Before choosing a mountain bike, consider these tips to help you buy the mountain bike which is perfect for your riding needs.

1: Thule 982 Bicycle Frame Adapter For Strap And Hitch Carriers
Thule 982 Bicycle Frame Adapter For Strap And Hitch Carriers
really helpfull part
very helpful part for easy assembly in the rack (helium). The first product sent came in with rusted screws, so after contacting amazon they quickly replaced the product.

Bicycle Frame Adapter
Bought this to hold my daughter's bike on the Thule 961XT Speedway bike rack. Easy to use & allows the bike to be held securely on the rack. Held the bike firmly in place from Alabama to Boston.

User Review: Thule 982 Bicycle Frame Adapter for Strap/Hitch Carriers
I purchased two Thule 982 Bicycle Frame Adapters for Thule 964 Revolver 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack from the Amazon retailer, Rack Attack. PROS: 1) Because of the numerous different bicycle frame configurations, it will quickly become apparent to the strap/hitch carrier user that mounting the bicycles level is difficult. Attaching the Thule 982 Bicycle Frame Adapter ends to the bike's handle bar and seat stems will make this procedure much easier. For this application, the product seems well designed. CONS: 1) One of adapters I received from the Amazon retailer had rusted bolts while still inside the packaging! However, shortly after being exposed to the ouside environment during use, all the lock bolts on both adaptors quickly rusted. At the stated MSRP, stainless steel hardware would have been the fair and better choice. 2) The rubberized coating on the metal ends of the adaptors will ultimately tear or wear down due to use, UVA exposure, etc.. As a result, the exposed metal ends of the adaptors could damage the bike's finish. Take care to protect the rubberized coating during use and storage. In conclusion, it is my opinion that the Thule 982 Frame Adaptor is both a well designed and needed accessory for the strap/hitch carrier user.

Too big for kids bikes
I bought two of these because my kids bikes do not have a top bar. The product description says to attach it to the seatpost and headset but since the adapter is too long, I had to attach it to the seatpost and the handle bar. The bikes rest on the carrier at a steep angle, but it still works. Just be aware of this if you have small bikes.
======================================================================
easy to use, works great
this simple attachment does exactly what's it's supposed to. it works well and fits my frame as it should
======================================================================
Helpful tool for small bike
If your sons bike is not the standard adult and does not have the "typical" setup, you wont be able to carry it without this adapter. Easy to use, hide and it does its job.
======================================================================
Works Great!
It was a little hard to figure out how to use it initially, because it didn't come with any directions. But after I figured it out it worked great! The only thing is that you can't use the stablizing part of my bike hitch when you use it, but the bike didn't really blow around without that. I would recommend it to anyone!

Are there any rear pannier racks that will go on bicycle lacking holes in the frame for brackets?
I just bought an older bike that lacks the little holes that aftermarket brackets use to tighten down pannier racks. I don't want one of those seatpost pannier racks. Are there any other options??
There are a couple ways to do this one is using band clamps available at any bike shop, another is to use a rack designed for a full suspension that mounts off the seat post
