Bike Brake Levers

Choosing your first motorcycle can be a difficult task. There are so many styles and brands to choose from that you really need to narrow your choices in order to make the decision that's right for you. To do this, we've put this helpful guide together to get you on your way.

Before you start hitting the shops and choosing your first motorcycle, let me remind you first to get the two most essential things - a motorcycle license and insurance.

Once you've made sure that you've availed yourself of these essentials, you can start picking out your motorcycle soul mate that you've been searching for a long time. Yes, it is true that with the wide range of motorcycle designs, specs, and features there is really one that is just right for you. It is just a matter of knowing what you want and making sure it fits your requirements.

Of course, it is no question that the first thing one would look in a motorcycle is its price. The price will depend mostly on the engine size that you want. There are engine sizes as small as 50cc and as large as 1800cc. Obviously, the bigger it is, the more power it has, and the higher the price tag it will most likely have.

What is important though, again, is that you know what you need. You need not purchase a motorcycle that's 1800cc or close to 1800cc when you know for a fact that you are not a heavy rider.

Below is a simple reference that will help you decide on what engine size to choose for a motorcycle:

1. For a 250cc and below engine size, these are considered small and light motorcycles.

2. For above 250cc but not more than 650cc, these are considered mid-ranges, or something between light to heavy riding like the big boys.

3. For 650cc up to 11000cc, these are already considered for the big boys.

4. For 1200cc and above, these are for the highly experienced bike riders.

Learning to ride on a scooter helps a beginner learn how to ride motorcycles. Balance, confidence and experience are the key to learning the basics. Once these have been established, knowing the technical side of motorcycles would be the next stop.

Another thing to consider when choosing your motorcycle is your seating comfort. The height of the motorcycle's seat should be just right for you so that you're still able to touch the ground with both feet. Basically what's important is that you get the "feel" of the motorcycle and make sure that you're comfortable when you ride it.

Below is a useful checklist that you can refer to when picking out your motorcycle:

1. Check that the levers and pedals are in good condition. They should be crack-free and with bends that are firmly attached.

2. Make sure that the handle bars are solid, straight, and evenly spaced.

3. Check the suspension. You can test this by pulling on the front brake then pushing down on the handle bars. The fork's suspension should smoothly glide up and down.

4. Make sure that all switches and lights function correctly.

Above all, make sure you like the bike you're buying! At the end of the day, it's really about you and what you're happy with.

Mountain Bikes Online

I guess that, with the development of the Internet from a middling bunch of computers on a network to a full-blown phenomenon of millions and millions of PCs and Macs all connected throughout the world, you can find anything you want online with just a smattering of keywords and Google (or Yahoo!, or MSN, or AOL, whichever you prefer.) I have been a Netizen for almost 6 years now; certainly not as old and experienced as the other veterans of the World Wide Web, maybe, but enough to have observed and experienced several of the significant developments and changes that the cyber world has gone through.

So why was I surprised when I found out that the sport of mountain biking has found a new home on the Internet? And not just a sport, but an entire, growing community and culture of pedaling enthusiasts that spans the globe. Going back to my self-imposed question, why was I surprised to see this? Probably because in my privately-held and biased opinion, I've always thought that freewheeling mountain bikers who spend their time going up and down hills riding their two-wheeled pedal machines wouldn't have the time nor the inclination to build a place on the Web.

How wrong I was. Mountain biking is certainly getting more and more exposure on the Internet, and well-deserved exposure, I might add. As I said, I have discovered that there is already a booming population of closely-knit communities of mountain bikers in cyberspace. You can practically find hundreds of websites, blogs, and forums dedicated to the sport. A wide array of topics are being discussed and presented at length in these communities, from brake levers to bike trails. And of course, with the spurt of the e-commerce trend, it cannot be avoided that shops catering to the specialized needs of mountain bikers have sprouted online as well.

But is this a bad thing we're talking about? Personally, I think not. The emergence of e-commerce has brought along with it an unsurpassed convenience and availability of products and services that your local bike shop will be hard-pressed to match. Unless, of course, your local bike shop has established an online presence as well. Enthusiasts and shoppers are greatly benefiting from the wide array of products that are readily available from virtually anywhere in the world, via the Internet. Whether you just want to find the best price for that crankset you need, or you're looking for the ultimate mountain bike package, going online can be the best way to go.

You don't have to be a technical wizard to enjoy online shopping for your bike gear. Most mountain bike websites, or cycling in general, usually feature helpful hints and tips to guide the less-than-expert shoppers make the most out of their website. Are you looking for a particular product? Or perhaps you just want to see all available products from your favorite manufacturer? Online stores usually allow you to search for any item you want using keywords. You can also find what you need by browsing the organized categories of items. Everything is arranged and laid out to enable shoppers to find and buy products faster and easier.

Can I add extra brake levers to any road bike?

Some Bikes, like the Raleigh Cadents, for example, come with extra brake levers on the top or flat portion of the handle bars, so that the brakes can be actuated from the more upright body position. Other bikes, such as the Bianchi Brava, do not come with those extra break levers.

Can the extra levers be added to any bike, or are there compatability issues with the main brake/shifter levers?

Are these extra levers available as extra lever kits? Are special tools required, to install special cable end thingies for example?

Can you provide a link to pages with extra lever kits?

Thanks

Many bikes, the classic "10 speeds," used to come with brake levers on the drop and the tops. These were called "safety levers." These were phased out as this style of bike become less popular with the advent of the mountain bike. In fact higher end bikes never really had them at all because they did not provide much of a benefit, provided weak stopping power, and got in the way.

However, they are back in production due to the increasing popularity of cyclocross. Companies have developed levers that provide braking from the tops of the bars. They are more powerful and safer than the previous versions as they actually engage the cable on the tops of the bars rather than just provide a linkage to the primary brake lever. A link to one such product is below.
