In many countries, law prohibits riding a motorbike without a helmet, and there are some valid reasons for this. Statistics compiled over the last four decades confirm that helmets help to avoid injuries and save lives. Not very long ago, open face helmets were the only helmets offered on the market. At one time, they were even made of cork.
There are many different kinds of helmets available today and each one has its own pros and cons. A full face helmet can cover up the entire head with the exception of the eyes, using a clear, tinted shield. Off road helmets are also generally full face, but the chin bar is built to keep away branches and dust as opposed to offering crash protection. The old-style helmets with an open face don't cover the chin, which is both an advantage and shortcoming.
Anybody who is used to riding a bike in traffic is aware of the fact that when you are wearing a full face helmet, it will be impossible for the drivers riding other vehicles to see your face. This was not considered to be an issue in the beginning, but drivers do much more communication using their facial expressions than it was initially assumed. If the face is hidden in the full face helmet, the rider will have no other way but to use his hands to communicate his intentions to other drivers in traffic. This will require him to let go the handgrip and hence his safety will be at risk until he gets his hands on the handles again. With an open helmet, on the other hand, the rider can smile, glare and gesture using his eyes without the need to let go the control of his bike, which is extremely important when riding in traffic.
Fans of full face helmets may argue that these helmets do provide protection to the lower face and chin in case of an accident; however, this is hardly ever a problem in everyday street riding. In fact, full face helmets were actually designed for racing. Being outrageously high-priced, they become extremely famous amongst sport riders. The majority of those who use their motorbike as a mode of transportation will go for the much more useful open face helmet in order to be able to smile at young kids and pretty girls, without compromising their safety.
