The Road bike is probably the most popular type of bicycle. The term can refer to bicycles specifically made to run on paved roads, as opposed to mountain bikes which have the specifications such as full suspensions to take on the demands of off road biking. A less common variant of the road bicycle is the fixed gear bicycle or commonly known in the US as fixie bikes or simply fixies. Fixies have their sprockets directly screwed onto a fixed hub thus can not freewheel. A road bike consists of a number of components, each of which has its important role in bicycle dynamics. What Makes a Bike
The bicycle has been around in one version or another since the 19th century. The first model was created in 1885 and was driven by chains. It doesn't however differ significantly from our modern day version. It was developed in Europe and has since spread to every corner of the earth. Each year, more and more people realize the joys and simplicity that riding a bicycle can offer. As this increase in riders occurs, there is a movement to learn more about the mechanics of a bicycle. This allows people to better understand their ride and make more educated decisions about purchasing bicycles and accessories.
Bicycles are made up of seven essential parts, not counting optional accessories. These parts or systems are: the frame, wheels, brakes, steering, seating, drivetrain, and suspension. The frame is generally made in a diamond shape consisting of two triangles. The first triangle consists of the front section of the bike, the second triangle is the seating and rear section of the bike. The wheels are made of metal and are covered in a rubber tire. Depending on the bike, they have one of three types of brake systems. They are: rim, hub or disc brakes. There are many accessories that exist for modern bicycles. how to tell if disc brakes are compatable with your bike?
i have a 2007 specialized rockhopper and i wanted to know if i could install discs. it has the front and rear mounting points but i dont know if i need new hubs. is there a way to tell?
If the bike has the mounts for them on both the frame and the fork, then yes it will be compatible. If you still have any questions, stop by a good bike shop.
That said, you will need to check the wheel hubs to see if they have the rotor mount holes. Otherwise you will need new wheels.
I wouldn't bother with mechanical disc brakes unless they were Avid. Even then, if you're going to this much trouble, go for the hydraulic units. They have dramatically more power.
