I have been asked why I think that cyclists should not drink alcohol, and this was my response:Although alcohol contains more energy per gram (7 Cal/gram) than carbohydrates, and it is rapidly absorbed from the intestinal tract, the available evidence suggests these calories are not utilized to any significant extent during exercise. Thus its negative effects outweigh any theoretical positive ones.
These include:
1) It's a diuretic and contributes to dehydration
2) Alcohol lowers your blood pressure while drinking it
3) After the alcohol is metabolized in the liver and excreted trough the kidneys the body reacts defensively increasing the blood pressure to compensate the dehydration, so the body tries to retain water doing this which causes not only temporary hypertension and in some people heart palpitations especially if they are athletes who climb in any way, like runner, hikers and cyclists.
4) It slows down glucose production, causing hypoglycemia
5) It metabolizes in the liver and destroys hepatic cells
6) It damages the pancreatic cells as well.
7) It disturbs motor skills including balance and coordination. There was a study from Pennsylvania State where 10 women were given a mixed alcohol drink. Then they made them ride stationary bikes for 30 minutes at 70-75% of their maximum heart rate. Compared to their own baseline performance off alcohol, cycling after drinking alcohol required more energy, produced a higher heart rate, and stimulated a higher cardiovascular demand. Even moderate drinking while exercising placed increased demands on the cardiovascular system. The bottom line is a definite negative influence on cycling performance. Now, you would probably want to ask me: but what's wrong when drinking a few glasses of alcohol and not riding until the next day when the alcohol has been excreted from your body? Alcohol intake affects the brain. The next day the brain is dead half the day because of blood sugar spikes. This doesn't mean they can't ride hard, but it does mean that they can't do much except lay around the rest of the day after a ride. Plus they seem to get injured a lot. I would say a glass of red wine a week with one's dinner is OK and it also depends on how serious the cyclist is about cycling.

Riding a Bicycle in Bangkok Thailand, Asia
Riding a Bicycle in Bangkok Thailand, Asia
Can you ride a bicycle in Bangkok?
The answer to this question surprisingly is, yes. There are even some cycle lanes in certain areas with elevated cycling paths in the Sukhumvit area and in the Banglamphu area near the famous Khaosan road there are free shopping type bicycles you can take out which are the brainchild of the present mayor of Bangkok in his first period of office along with the many cycling lanes in the area that have appeared in the last two years.
Banglamphu Cycling Lanes
The cycle lanes in the Khaosan Road area are painted on the side of the road and are fairly easy to follow which will mean you won’t get lost but there are some problems. Most of the cycle lanes are parked on with cars which can result in having to ride into oncoming traffic so the best thing to do is ride carefully on the foot path to be safer.
Places to See by Bicycle
These cycling lanes lead you to some interesting little tourist sites such as Bangkok’s China Town, the Golden Mount Pagoda which at only 20 baht to enter is one of the best Temples in Bangkok and a great view point from which to see a 360 degree view of the city and Bangkok’s old prison which is now park.
The Basic Rules for Riding on the Main Roads in Bangkok
The main roads are always busy and can be dangerous for a cyclist but you will often see the locals on bikes peddling sausages or lottery tickets etc. If you do ride on the big roads then try to keep to the left and always remember the rule ' the biggest has right of way'.
Another thing that you should try to practice is wave on coming motorbikes going the wrong way on the road over on to your right as they can see the traffic behind you but you can’t. It is also said that when riding on the road in Bangkok then ride in the center of the lane, cars will get angry and press their horns but at least they can see you in full view and riding this way can prevent accidents.
The Best Places to Ride in Bangkok
Where are the best places to ride a bike in Bangkok? You can ride bicycles in a lot of Bangkok’s parks. One of the biggest and nicest parks is at Phuttamonthon Sai 3 there are quiet roads to follow through the park with lakes and lots of wildlife to see, there is also a 7km mountain bike trail to follow.
Riding on Elevated Footpaths
Other good places to ride are the local sois (lanes) these places are usually quiet and don't have much traffic and can follow narrow roads and Klongs (canals). You will often see small shops to buy refreshments if needed. You could almost mistake yourself for being in another city in some sois. The noise from the traffic is lost and trees and local Thai houses make good scenery.
Cycling Tour Companies in Bangkok
There are also tour companies that can take you on short trips. These trips take you over bridges down local sois and through temples avoiding the main roads. Some are at night and some are combined with long tail boat rides.

What is the best clipless system for road bikes?
I would like to convert my road bike from SPD pedals and MTB shoes to true road pedals and road shoes for 30-60 mile rides. I would like a system that is easy to get in and out of - that is my first priority since I sometimes ride on city streets. I have never ridden anything but SPD's or platform pedals so I want to know the pros and cons of Look, Time, Speedplay, etc.
There's a reason that Look pedals are the most popular road pedals: they work very well and suffer the least amount of drawbacks. They are easily found, easily set up, and the cleat mounting is used by most of the cycling shoes sold. They are easy to use and very reliable. Also, their large platform reduces hotspots in the foot. The newer Keo version is comparative in weight to the lighter pedal systems.
Speedplay is the ultimate racer's pedal but try walking on the cleats and it's scary. If you never walk on your cycling shoes, then Speedplays are the best.
Of the people that I see who fall down at a stoplight because they couldn't unclip, 85% have been on Shimano SPDs. Also hear a lot of complaints about hotspots.
SPD-SL is comparable in performance to Look. This is Shimano's large platform road cleat pedal.
Time and Campagnolo ProFit are not very popular for various reasons.
