The hub--an affordable and reliable version of the multi-speed hubs growing in popularity at the time--caught the attention of the industry. So much so that by 1965, Yoshizo Shimano--the youngest son of the company founder in Japan--opened an office in New York. Shimano's goal was to get quicker product feedback and to provide technical and warranty assistance to retailers selling bikes equipped with Shimano parts. Though Shimano American has grown from that first modest office staffed by only three people to a full distribution center with sales and marketing offices, its goals are the same: listen to customers and meet their needs for both bicycle and fishing products. |

About Shimano In 1961, a 3-speed bicycle hub displayed at the New York Toy Show was the catalyst for what would eventually become Shimano American Corporation. The popularity of 20-inch wheeled bikes with hi-rise handle bars fueled a demand for multi-speed hubs and Shimano was producing an affordable and reliable version that caught the attention of the industry. So much so, that by 1965, Yoshizo Shimano, the youngest son of the company founder in Japan, opened an office in New York to get quicker product feedback and to provide technical and warranty assistance to retailers selling bikes equipped with Shimano parts. Though Shimano American has grown from that first modest office staffed by only three people to a full distribution center with sales and marketing offices, the goals are the same: to ensure that Shimano always has a listening ear to provide feedback on relevant trends and needs of the North American market for both bicycle and fishing products and make those a reality for customers. |

Buying Your First Mountain Bike
Buying a new mountain bike can be confusing. There are several different brands of mountain bikes, and several different types of each brand. Always buy a bike for what you are going to use it for. We all know downhill and freeride bikes look awesome, but if you're going to be riding cross country, buy a cross country bike. Now there are two types of cross country bikes hard tail and full suspension. Neither one is better than the other. The deciding factor is how they feel to you personally. Full suspension is better for long rides because your butt wont hurt as bad, and hard tail gives you a feeling a being better connected to the ground and they feel a little more responsive. But once again, it is all your personal preference.
One thing that many people do not know, is that most bikes in the same price range usually have the same components. The main brands are shimano and sram, both of which are great companies. Since all of the components are about the same, the most important thing is the frame. The frame needs to be strong, somewhat light, but most of all it needs to feel good to you. The most important thing to do is TEST RIDE! Try out as many different bikes as you can, then once you find one you really like, try a few more. If you do this I promise you will not be disappointed with your purchase. Many bike shops will let you rent the bikes they have and go try them out on the trails. I would definitely take advantage of this.

Getting Started Mountain Biking
How much faster are road/hybrid bikes compared to MTB?
I'm not a bicycle enthusiast yet, but I'm getting hybrid/comfort bike (shimano 105 groupset) next week and I was wondering how much of a difference it will make in a 40 mile run. Last time I went to the beach I did a 40 mile run on my toys r us mountain bike and came back so exhausted, it seemed like it took forever to do one mile, people on thin-wheeled bikes kept "dropping" me, and on my 2nd run the bike fell apart.
I've been fitted to my new bike and have test rided it, but I was wondering how much of a difference do you think I will feel in another 40 mile run when comparing a hybrid bike to a MTB.
as said about, department store bikes are never the best mine would last 6 months tops...
but theyre is actually a huge difference is potential speed between mtb and hybrids/road bikes, and its all in gearing. MTBs usually share similar cassettes as hybrids (32T-11T), but they have smaller gearing in the crankset, usually not going over 42T, whereas hybrid/road bikes can go all the way up to 50T+ and that will make a difference is speed. MTB are more focused for, well mountain biking, which is much slower and more technical than road bikes, so they need a smaller gearing to overcome obsticles road bikes never need to.
