Saddle bags are called such because they were used on either side of a horse's saddle they were necessary pouches used to carry supplies and equipment when horse travel was the primary mode of transport. These bags were primarily hand crafted from leather and were often times very ornate with silver Conchos and beading. The more ornate the wealthier the rider was. These were status symbols of sorts. These types of bags are still used by folks who ride horses; they have however lost some of their necessity. They are largely favored by true equestrians that take long trail rides with their horses. Another type of saddle bag is the type that is used by motorcyclists to hold their personal gear while they are on the road. For the purposes of this article, however, we will stick to the true saddle bag that is meant for using in equestrian circles.
Fashionable
There was a trend in hand bags that mimicked the saddle bags of days gone by. Theses over sized purses were made to be slung over the shoulder and lay flat against the wearer's side. They hung right to the hip. They were very popular during the nineteen nineties and you will still see them every now and again as the trend tries to revive itself.
These types of bags were often made of leather but were also made in the less expensive canvas.
Where to Purchase
You can purchase these types of bags that are used for their true calling through most any tack shop. A tack shop is a dealer in leather goods for horses. You can find a tack shop online which is probably a lot easier than trying to find one locally. You can also find saddle bags at other online vendors. It is far more likely that you will find these items online than it is that you will find them in any local shop unless of course you live in an equestrian high area.
The cost is largely dependent on the style that you choose and whether it is hand or machine made. Typically they are sold in pairs so you will be getting a set of bags. This type of bag will usually last a lifetime. They are actually better looking the more worn in they are.
Saddle bags really come in handy when you have a load to carry and you are on horseback. They are probably a lot less necessary today than they were say one hundred and fifty years ago or so, but that depends on who you ask. If you are on a long trail ride it is great to be able to reach into the bag and pull out a cool drink.
Saddle bags have gone through some transformation over the years from being an extremely necessary item to something nice to have and they did have a short stint as a very fashionable ladies hand bag. They have been around for a long time and it seems like they will stay put for a long time.
There are a wide variety of saddle bag styles. Saddle bags are an absolute horse-riding necessity.
Caring For Your Leather Bar Stools
One of the greatest things about bar stools is how many different styles, shapes, colors and designs there are to choose from. Despite this wide variety, the most popular fabric used for seat upholstery is leather. A well made leather seat gives any piece of furniture a timeless quality, and unlike some fabrics, you never have to worry about ripping, tearing or some of the traditional problems you would have with lesser coverings. Caring for your leather seat is important, however. Here are a few tips you can use to extend the life of your bar stool even further.
Cleaning
In most cases, leather products will either come with a small bottle of cleaner or the manufacturer will specifically request that a particular cleaning agent be used. In lieu of that, your local supermarket or hardware store will have a wide range of leather cleaners you can choose from. It is important that you use a designated leather cleaner and not something like soap and water or Windex because leather needs to be conditioned while it is being cleaned. Other cleaners can dry out leather and cause it to crack and degrade. If you need help finding the right leather cleaner for your bar stool, simply find out what kind of leather you have and speak to someone at your local hardware store for more information.
Conditioning
While you are at your friendly neighbourhood hardware store, you may want to ask about conditioning your leather. When you condition leather, you reintroduce moisture, and often times oils, back into the fabric. Think of a fine, old saddle that needs to be cleaned and spruced up on a regular basis or the leather will crack and lose its lustre. You want to avoid cleaners that contain petroleum products, so make sure you read the label before you make your purchase.
Polishing
If you are having a dinner party or some other kind of special event, you may want to go the extra mile and polish your leather furniture. Be careful, however, some leather polishes will actually come off on clothing, so unless you want to cause a scene, make sure the polish you choose doesn't have any color in it. In most cases, a simple conditioning will add enough shine to your leather to suffice. If you do choose to polish, pick one that uses natural ingredients to add that extra bright lustre.
Cleaning
Just like with any other surface, the sooner you can get to a stain in your leather, the better. First, attack each stain with damp cloth. Be sure not to use soap or any kind of cleaner that is not specifically made for leather. If a simple damp cloth doesn't seem to work, use a store bought leather cleaner to get out the stain. You may want to read the instructions, however, as some leather cleaners are only for a particular colour (black, brown, etc). Always follow the instructions on the bottle and never leave a cleaning product on your leather for extended periods of time unless specifically told to do so.

Bring back the black to a faded saddle?
My dressage saddle has faded in some places and I read you can use oil to darken leather. Anyone tried this? What kind of oil do I use? Any other ways to help make those light spot darker?
Regular saddle oil will darken leather a few shades when you oil it. It will lighten as it dries out again (as in, if you don't oil it again for a month or something). So, if you just keep up with oiling, that won't happen. Anything like Lexol or whatever. Any oil, really.
I warn you not to try to dye saddles because you can't get an even dye job and it comes off on your pants. I've had a really expensive pair of tailored sportsmans almost ruined when my friend's saddle rubbed red stain off onto them
