Old School Snowboarding: The Very First Contest [VHS] List Price: $12.99 Sale Price: $1.95 |
|
This 1980 record of the first snowboarding contest is best when viewed as archival comedy. Today's big names in the boarding business, Tom Sims and Jake Burton, are shown handling with pride the latest technology in the then-new sport. Modified skates and truncated surfboards resemble cut-up toboggans with haphazardly attached Velcro straps, cut inner tubing and bungee cords serve as bindings while kevlar is touted as the way of the future. As the grand slalom competition is set to begin, there is a brief shot of two people inching along an imperceptible incline on reversed snow shovels, then with a kickoff provided by instantly dropped ski poles, the race begins. Flags are missed, and the participants spend more time in splayed horizontal stasis than in vertical motion. Shots of a hand-packed jump barely three feet high from which various skating tricks are attempted without a single landing are juxtaposed against contest footage from today. What is most apparent throughout this landmark competition are how the participants--including the hijacked jeans-wearing professional skaters, today's legends Sims and Burton, and random skiers attracted to the newness of this then burgeoning sport--recorded here for the first time, exemplify the free spirit and sense of adventure today's snowboarders are known for. Snowboarding Old School shows not only how far the sport has come in the years since the first ever snowboarding competition but how true to its roots the sport has remained. --DJ Alton The popularity of skateboarding and BMX freestyle is exploding throughout cable sports channels and international contests boasting thousands of spectators; the popular "Curb Dogs" series shows how it all got started! Packed with 1980s footage, back when most onlookers thought these activities were "fads," these videos burst with the exuberant and rebellious spirit of these street sport pioneers. |

Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 (Playstation 2) List Price: $19.79 Sale Price: $34.95 |
|
Fans of extreme-sports games looking for a diversion from Tony Hawk will want to sign up for the road trip in Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2, in which you'll join 11 other riders on a tricked-out tear across the U.S.--from Oklahoma City to Hawaii. But before you can hang with the likes of Mat "The Condor" Hoffman or Ruben "Pollo" Alcantara, it's advisable to practice your chops on the Free Ride or Session modes, especially if you're a newcomer to tricks-based sports games. We spent a good amount of time on Free Ride's open-ended play time to master the complicated sets of controller taps needed to achieve trick points. The levels that you can ride in either Session or Free Ride depend on what you've unlocked in Road Trip. To get to the next destination, you'll need to complete a set of four challenges not once, but three times (in rookie, semipro, and pro). That can be a daunting challenge, especially for beginners, and for more experienced players it can get a little tedious as you search for the final trick that will push you to the next level. That said, after building some new calluses, we found a satisfying BMX groove and zoomed along on our road trip. The game also includes several multiplayer options, including HORSE, Tag, Halfpipe Hell, Graffiti War, and Push, where you try to out trick your opponent and make his side of the screen smaller by increasing your side of the screen. Graphically, the game detail is superb--from the bikes and riders to the glitzy lights of the Las Vegas background. Our one major technical beef came from not being able to use our own soundtrack, but the game is populated with some fine tunes, ranging from LL Cool J to Iggy Pop. --Agen Schmitz Pros: As tricky and fun to master as Tony Hawk Fantastic graphics--from backgrounds to riders Numerous multiplayer games Cons: Can be frustrating for beginners to extreme-sports games You can't set your own soundtrack Note: This review refers to the Xbox version of this game. Winter is coming, and for a lot of us, it's time to put away our cycling gear, put the winter tires on the car, and bring out the stationary bike trainer. As you all know, this can be the most grueling part of being a cyclist. Most of the time we spend during the winter months are spent on base training, so our level of exertion isn't very high. Here are a few things you can do to keep you busy during those tedious sessions.
Watch the Tube
You can't bring the TV on your bike, but now you can bring your bike to your TV! Many of us have access to TV (or a computer) while training, and flip through the stations or pop in a DVD. Here are a few suggestions of things you can watch:
- A new TV series. Now is a great time to watch all those shows you wanted to watch but couldn't find the time (because your spare time was spent on the bike!) Most network TV shows can now be purchased on DVD. Some of my favorite shows I watched last year while training are Prison Break, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, and 24. They are all great shows and have multiple seasons to get into. Motivational incentive: Force yourself to watch the episodes only when on the trainer. If you want to find out how Jack Bauer saves the nation, you need to have your ass on your saddle!
- Bike Races. Most of our bike training sessions are done alone, down in the basement so as not to bother anyone with the whizzing of the trainer. This is generally NOT a great motivational atmosphere. Sometimes we need to be reminded of why we are doing this. Watching the peloton, the attacks, and the suffering can sometimes point us back in the right direction. There are many great races you can watch including the Paris Roubaix, Milan-Sanremo, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Giro di Lombardia, Giro d'italia, vuelta espana, and of course the Tour de France. Unfortunately race DVD's can get a bit pricey (around $90 a pop), so it's good to think ahead and record any bike races you can during the race season.
- Trainer specific DVD programs. There are many DVD's you can purchase that are designed specifically for workouts on the trainer. Some of them include Spinervals, Carmichael Training System DVD's, epicRIDES , and Global Ride. These are all great programs to follow.
Listen and Learn
If watching TV isn't the most popular bike trainer activity, then music is. There is nothing easier then popping in our ear buds and flipping through the tracks on our iPods. But there are more things you can listen to besides music on your iPod.
- Audio books. Most popular books now have an audio version you can purchase. You would be surprised how easily you can get drawn into an audio book. Give it a try!
- Learn a new language. There are many language learning programs you can listen to for practically any language. One of the most popular, and the only one I've personally tried is Pimsleur (I did the french program).
- Podcasts. The Fredcast is a weekly cycling podcast discussing news, interviews, events, and reviews in the cycling industry. Other podcasts you can listen to are The Bikescape podcast, and Two Johns.
There are so many more great programs, DVD's, music, and other activities you can do on the stationary trainer. Try to make use of this idle time, and motivate yourself to keep those legs spinning!

Using YouTube to increase your online profits
If you thought YouTube was just a place where teenagers and geeks hang out to watch semi funny films all day, then think again. Now owned by Google it is said to be the second biggest search engine. People use it to search for information and solutions to anything you can think of from building Wordpress sites to putting up pop up tents.
For this reason, many internet marketers started to use it to profit from by making useful videos that either drive traffic to their own or an affiliate website or as a pre teaser for a forth coming big product that they were about to launch.
Here are the 7 steps to start your YouTube business campaign.
1. Set up a channel for your business, using your name or business name. Use something formal or professional and not something wacky or comical unless your niche suits a fun name.
2. Put your details into the profile, make sure to fill it all out. Chose a relevant picture or logo to create a branding or well known ‘Face' for you within your niche.
3. Upload any videos you have or if you have yet to film some, start to make a few films using free online screen capture software like www.screenr.com to capture a series of slides made in PowerPoint or the free slideshow software that you can get in Google documents. (You will need a gmail account for access to Google docs but it is free!) You could always start by doing a quick webcam introduction of yourself and what you do but please do not try to come across as some slick American Guru style sales man. It usually scares people away!
4. Do some research, look for other people with similar videos and channels. Subscribe to as many as you can, add comments and ‘Likes' to other peoples channels. This can lead to other people seeing your comments and ‘Likes' and visiting your channel meaning your videos getting viewed.
5. Create a plan to follow that includes all the above. Each week make and add at least one video, look for more channels to subscribe to and add comments and ‘Likes' to other videos to keep increasing your subscription base. The more content and updates that you regularly do the more likely your viewers will come back.
6. Videos that generally work best are ones that can offer a solution to a problem or helpful tips to overcome a problem easily and quickly. Try to give good content freely without constantly trying to sell to people. Videos with free content helping out problems are great pre teasers to a following up sell product.
7. Once you have the hang of posting new videos and content regularly as well posting and replying to comments the next thing to do is promote your videos outside of YouTube on sites such as Facebook and Twitter as well as your own websites. If you use Screenr to record your videos you can post them straight to Twitter and upload them to YouTube as soon as you have finished.
Once you have a few videos online within your chosen niche with subscribers then now is the time to profit from them.
For example, I am a fully trained carpenter and have spent 20 years working in the woodworking business, If I recorded myself doing 5 minute quick carpentry tutorials like fitting architrave around a door and fitting locks, I could then make a DVD product where I teach the complete door fitting from frame right through to the last door handle. I could sell this complete DVD to my woodworking hungry followers, I could do DVDs of fitting new kitchens, or replacing windows. I could also have several eBooks in the carpentry or general house building niches which I could sell off the back of my series of 5 minute tutorials.
This could be done in thousands of niches from building trades, BMX biking, breakdancing, sea fishing, martial arts, so, so many niches that can be profitable. Is it worth you considering?
