what is a headset on a bmx bike and where does it go?
hy forks dont get tight and they clunk around when i ride i had a gyro bit i took it off for dirt riding could i need a new headset or diffrent forks? i cut my forks down so they would not stick out of the stem
what kind should i get ny forks are 1"
Your headset is the bearings that allow your handlebar to turn your fork, and thus your wheel smoothly. There are two types of headsets: threaded and threadless. From your description, you definitely have a threadless headset.
Basically the bearings are housed in two cups on the top and bottom of your headtube (the vertical part of your frame that the fork goes through). The cups are press fit, and if you want to change your headset you need a few expensive tools, thus it is much better to let your local bike shop do the work for half the cost.
If you are doing a lot of dirt jumping, you'll learn you have to replace headsets, even if they are beefy. The bearings just can't handle the stress of all the torque against the fork on big hits. I do recommend a beefy headset, nonetheless.
At this point I'm going to recommend you see your local bike shop as a loose fork and headset is very dangerous, and it can be a complex job removing gyros, cutting forks and installing headsets. At least now you have a bit more information and can confidently talk about your bike to the shop grease monkey.
