Old School Snowboarding: The Very First Contest [VHS] List Price: $12.99 Sale Price: $1.95 |
|
This 1980 record of the first snowboarding contest is best when viewed as archival comedy. Today's big names in the boarding business, Tom Sims and Jake Burton, are shown handling with pride the latest technology in the then-new sport. Modified skates and truncated surfboards resemble cut-up toboggans with haphazardly attached Velcro straps, cut inner tubing and bungee cords serve as bindings while kevlar is touted as the way of the future. As the grand slalom competition is set to begin, there is a brief shot of two people inching along an imperceptible incline on reversed snow shovels, then with a kickoff provided by instantly dropped ski poles, the race begins. Flags are missed, and the participants spend more time in splayed horizontal stasis than in vertical motion. Shots of a hand-packed jump barely three feet high from which various skating tricks are attempted without a single landing are juxtaposed against contest footage from today. What is most apparent throughout this landmark competition are how the participants--including the hijacked jeans-wearing professional skaters, today's legends Sims and Burton, and random skiers attracted to the newness of this then burgeoning sport--recorded here for the first time, exemplify the free spirit and sense of adventure today's snowboarders are known for. Snowboarding Old School shows not only how far the sport has come in the years since the first ever snowboarding competition but how true to its roots the sport has remained. --DJ Alton The popularity of skateboarding and BMX freestyle is exploding throughout cable sports channels and international contests boasting thousands of spectators; the popular "Curb Dogs" series shows how it all got started! Packed with 1980s footage, back when most onlookers thought these activities were "fads," these videos burst with the exuberant and rebellious spirit of these street sport pioneers. |

I love going to road cycling matches. Being the only girl in the family among five siblings I grew up and was influenced by my father and brother's passion for cycling. When I was little, while my brother are playing with their bicycles and wearing their road cycling shoes I was watching them while playing house with my doll. Back then I was wondering why they were so happy playing and all. I was curious but I never bothered joining them.
Moreover, every time we go to the mall to buy some clothing, toys, and whatnot we always drop by the cycling shop and my father and brothers would check out the latest cycling shoes. I didn't mind because we would also drop by the toy shop and mom would let me choose all the girl toys and dress that I want. Going home after shopping is such a joy as we couldn't resist talking about the stuff mom and dad bought for us. My brothers would tease me and make fun of me.
Thing started to change when I went to junior high school. That time our family relocated to another town because of my dad's work. We lived in the suburb and the school was just three blocks away from our home. My brothers would just ride their bicycles to go to school. It was then that I asked them if they could teach me how to ride a bike. Doing so, I will be able to go to school without having to rely too much on my dad and brothers, besides, I wasn't getting any younger. On weekends they would let me use their bikes and mom brought me my own cycling shoes.
The moment I learned how to ride a bike on my own it was very fulfilling. No wonder why my brothers and my dad enjoy road cycling so much. It wasn't long before I got my own bicycle (and yes, it's pink). I would join my brothers in their road cycling activity around the area and every time we go to school. All those times, I am wearing my cycling shoes and I just can't believe how comfortable they are.
My friends in school were also surprised when they saw me joined the local road cycling tournament. I joined the competition with my brothers in my pink road cycling shoes and jersey. It wasn't a big competition but it allowed me to show what I am capable of in cycling and of course meeting new people.
The road cycling tournament concluded without me getting an award but I was nonetheless very happy. In my road cycling shoes I was able to prove something. For me that was already an achievement.
Slim-fit Pants
Skinny jeans have a snug fit through the legs and end in a small leg opening. Other names for this style include carrot leg pants, cigarette pants, drainpipes, peg leg pants, pencil pants, skinny pants, slimjims, tapered pants, old-school hood jeans or ice-cream cone pants. In some styles, zippers are needed at the bottom of the leg to facilitate pulling them over the feet. Stretch denim, with anywhere from 2% to 4% spandex, may be used to allow jeans to have a super-slim fit. Skinny jeans are worn by both males and females, and since 2005 has become increasingly popular.
sleeveless t-shirts
The style of pants for men originated in the 1950s with popular male stars such as Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid, Zorro and Gene Autry, Marilyn Monroe, and Sandra Dee wearing their pants very slim to the ankle.
Skinny jeans became most notable with country music stars and with the birth of rock 'n' roll in the '50s, when Elvis donned slim-fitting jeans and shocked the country with his gyrating dance moves. Skinny jeans and rock 'n' roll were inextricably linked to create the "bad boy" image that remains today. Skinny jeans were also worn by numerous rock bands, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and others.
Drainpipe jeans (as they were then called) were also extremely popular in the punk movement of the late 1970s, worn by many bands and scene leaders such as The Clash, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and were sold by the revolutionary shop Sex, run by Vivienne Westwood. The tight fit trousers were often customised with bondage-style zips or patches of other material, and were often worn tucked into industrial-style boots such as Dr Martens.
Skinny jeans were also very popular in the 1980s, with most heavy metal bands in particular those in the thrash scene such as Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica and Slayer. This was the trend for those who didn't wear spandex, which was popular with the dominant glam metal scene at the time. They were often worn with white high-top sneakers or basket-ball shoes. By the late '80s and early '90s, many hair metal bands such as Poison, Guns N' Roses and M?tley Cr?e to Kiss, Bon Jovi and Slaughter, ditched the spandex and wore the form fitted jeans. However with the rise of grunge and hip-hop music in the early nineties and the post thrash movement, skinny jeans quickly went out of favour.
In the early 2000s, they became favored by garage rock revival bands and musicians, such as The Strokes. Model Kate Moss has been credited with reintroducing the jeans to women. Among women, skinny jeans are most often worn tucked into boots or scrunched up over the wearer's footwear.[1] Skinny jeans are also often paired with ballerina shoes, another trend that supermodel Kate Moss has been credited with. The Libertines (particularly Carl Barat and Pete Doherty) used skinny jeans as part of their image. This was later adopted by more mainstream indie pop and indie rock acts such as Test Icicles, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, The Kooks and The Horrors, as well as comedians Russell Brand and Noel Fielding, increasing the popularity of skinny jeans amongst men. Some skateboarders prefer to wear the jeans because of their ability to stretch, thus making it easier to move around whilst skating. Skinny jeans are also now very prominent in the BMX scene rendering greater maneuverability and less instances in which the pants are caught in the bikes moving parts. They have grown in the latter half of the 2000's to become associated with a emo and indie rock trend.

X GAMES NOTEBOOK: Sablone takes stairs to win gold
