TeamCyclist: Different Types of Bicycle Pedals
This also further improves many cyclists' performances. There are many types of pedals to choose from. It depends on the type of cycling you are sporting and your personal preference when it comes to comfort. It is important to be knowledgeable about the different types of pedals. TeamCyclist, the popular online store for quality bicycle components and gears, shares us some information.
- Shimano Pedaling Dynamics / Shimano SPDs– Often called SPDs. Most beginner cyclists prefer this type of pedal because it has smaller cleats. This makes engaging and disengaging from the pedal easier. SPDs are great for road and mountain cycling. Also, the cycling shoes compatible for SPD pedals are preferred because it gives the wearer ease in walking when he steps out from the bike. It is one of the least expensive pedals in the market. The price ranges from $60 to $280. However, it can be slightly uncomfortable when used on long rides because the small cleats cause vascular restriction and nerve impingement.
- Time ATAC – Time ATAC pedals are one of the most expensive types. The prices range from $140 to $375. It is a high-end type of pedal because of the quality. It can withstand most heavy weather conditions, so that is why many cyclists love this type of pedal. Time ATACs are commonly used by cyclo-cross participants and other professional cyclists. It is not recommended to beginners because it has a higher spring tension which requires more power.
- Crank Brothers – Crank Brothers pedals are used on mountain bikes. Their price ranges from $75 to $450. There two different models which are more popular than others: the Candy models and Egg-beater. The Egg-beater is the first model they launched. It was designed to shed mud easily. The Candy models, however, were made to have wider platforms which make greater power transfer possible.
- Shimano Road Pedals – Shimano road pedals are designed to have the widest cleat to pedal interface or platform. Cyclists who use this type of pedal increases feet stability and maximizes power transfer. The price of this type of pedal ranges from $80 to $300.
- Looks – This type of pedal is slightly similar to Shimano road pedals except that it has narrower cleat to pedal interface or platform. Also, disengaging from Looks pedals is much easier or smoother than any other types. This makes it recommendable for cyclists who are not used to clipless pedal systems. The price of Looks pedals range from $80 to $500.
- Speedplays – Speedplay pedals are very flexible in a way that it provides 0 to 20 degrees internal and external heel rotation, commonly known as float. It is the only type of road pedals which allows you to clip on either side of it. The only disadvantage of Speedplays is the risk of getting an illiotibial band injury.
- Platform Pedals – Platform pedals is the most standard type. From beginners to BMX riders, racers, and recreational cyclists still prefer platform pedals other than the rest. It is very inexpensive, plus, you do not need to use special cycling shoes in pedaling.
These are the different types of bicycle pedals. To check them out, you can visit TeamCyclist for a wide variety of cycling components.

Are you cranks 9/16 or 1/2 in thread? You need the correct thread size. If the thread size is correct, check that you have the correct pedal. They should be marked L and R somewhere on the spindle. The thread is also intended to stop the pedal coming undone, so seems the wrong way when tightening - check the thread direction and ensure you are trying to tighten, not loosen as you try to install.
