Eye for an Eye List Price: $8.99 Sale Price: $3.04 |
|
Sally Field stars in this well-crafted revenge thriller. Eye for an Eye follows Karen McCann (Field) after her teenage daughter is raped and murdered. At first, she sinks into depression and paranoia; but, when the killer (Kiefer Sutherland) is caught, then released on a technicality, she becomes obsessed and begins to track him in his neighborhood. Her single-mindedness begins to distance her from her husband (Ed Harris). Finally, when the killer threatens her younger daughter, she decides to take matters into her own hands. Eye for an Eye is not exactly a balanced examination of justice and revenge--Sutherland's killer is a relentless monster--but it does approach the conflict from many points of view, articulated by a superb supporting cast, including Joe Mantegna, Beverly D'Angelo, Charlayne Woodard, Philip Baker Hall, Keith David, and Donal Logue. It's directed with professional skill by John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, Marathon Man). --Bret Fetzer Intense drama starring Sally Field as a Los Angeles businesswoman whose teenage daughter is viciously raped and murdered. When the chief suspect, deliveryman Kiefer Sutherland, avoids prosecution because of a legal loophole, Field goes on the offensive, taking justice into her own hands. Ed Harris and Joe Mantegna also star; directed by John Schlesinger. 101 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround, French Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English. |

Lake Placid List Price: $9.98 Sale Price: $4.47 |
|
Lake Placid is total trash--and, as a result, fairly entertaining. Yet another entry in the horror subgenre of giant animals running amok, Lake Placid features a giant crocodile that has somehow found its way to an isolated lake in Maine. The absurdity of crocodiles in Maine sets the tone for the entire movie, which has no ambitions beyond mixing a little fright with a little humor. Bridget Fonda (Point of No Return, Jackie Brown) plays a paleontologist sent to investigate a large tooth; Bill Pullman (Independence Day, Lost Highway) is a fish and game warden just trying to keep the peace; Oliver Platt (Funny Bones, Flatliners) plays a loose-cannon mythology professor who swims with crocodiles for sport; and Brendan Gleeson (an excellent but little-known actor, most noted for The General) is a local sheriff with a short temper and a big gun. Add a few gruesome dismemberments, Betty White as a cantankerous old broad who may have murdered her husband, and a cow hanging from a helicopter, and there you have it: Lake Placid. (Curiously, this concoction was put together by David E. Kelley, better known as the creator of TV's Ally McBeal and The Practice.) --Bret Fetzer The arrival of a gigantic, man- (and cow-) eating crocodile turns a peaceful New England lakeside region into a killing field in this bone-chilling horror thriller with a biting script courtesy of "Ally McBeal" creator David E. Kelly. Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Oliver Platt, Betty White star. 82 min. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround, French Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English, Spanish; biographies; featurette; theatrical trailer; TV spots. |

You Can Count on Me List Price: $9.98 Sale Price: $6.79 |
|
You Can Count On Me starts with a terrible car crash that instantly orphans a little boy and his older sister. At film's end, that boy, now a grown-up nomad and ne'er-do-well, takes off by Greyhound after a brief reunion with his sister, who lives at permanent anchor in their unspoiled hometown. The sibling saga that unreels between wrenching collision and bittersweet separation celebrates the idiosyncratic ways wounded folk like Terry (Mark Ruffalo) and Sammy (Laura Linney) put one foot in front of the other, both energized and hamstrung by the knowledge that nothing is ever certain in the road-movie of life. During his visit, Terry roils Sammy's becalmed existence, mostly by "fathering"--for good and ill--her overprotected 8-year-old (Rory Culkin), sneaking him out to play empowering bar pool, later introducing him to the weaselly dad he's fantasized into a superhero. Sammy starts a torrid affair with her married boss at the bank (Matthew Broderick gives delicious bureaucratic smarm), and considers marrying her sometime suitor (Jon Tenney), sweetly dull yet dependable. The narrative peaks here are human-sized, elevated by gentle humor and clear-eyed faith in the existential importance of these intersecting small-town lives. Linney is simply superb as Sammy, wild girl gone good, involuntarily "mothering" every man in her life. An authentic original, newcomer Ruffalo gives his modern-day Huck Finn a drawling, James Dean delivery tuned somewhere between a screwup's whine and the twang of pothead wisdom. (Hard to think of another recent film that so deftly nails down the rich dynamics of everyday conversation--the starts and stops, circumlocutions, clichés, sudden veers into revelation and eloquence.) This is that rarity, an action movie of the heart: no explosions or epiphanies, yet everything evolves through the catalysts of character and experience. --Kathleen Murphy Set in upstate New York, this acclaimed dramedy focuses on Samantha (Laura Linney), a single mother with an 8-year-old son, who works at a bank under a tough new manager (Matthew Broderick). When her long-lost brother Terry (Mark Ruffalo) arrives at Samantha's home in search of money, they face the troubles of their past while trying to mend their relationship. Jon Tenney and Rory Culkin also star; written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. 110 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.0, Dolby Digital Surround; Subtitles: English; audio commentary by Lonergan; theatrical trailer; interviews. With all the chaos on our modern highways, surface roads and back roads it's hard to keep an accurate mental log of everything that goes on. The iDrive2 automatically remembers all the events prior to, and after, any accident or incident you may be involved in with amazing clarity and detail, and of course the all important time stamp that law enforcement and the courts will require to turn your video into admissible evidence. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas ( DVD-ROM ) List Price: $49.99 Sale Price: $5.80 |
|
This software is BRAND NEW. Packaging may differ slightly from the stock photo above. Please click on our logo above to see over 15,000 titles in stock. It may not be a splashy leap forward, but Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in its own deep, dark way does just as much to move and revolutionize video games as its two predecessors, Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. As in previous installments, here you play as a thug with problems you must steal and shoot your way out of, but the problems this time are disconcertingly more realistic. You play as Carl Johnson, known on the street as CJ, a likeable criminal type who has just returned to his hometown, Los Santos (a fictionalized Los Angeles), to find that his mother has been murdered and that the police have framed him for another murder. Reunions with his friends and a troubled relationship with his brother set off a sprawling, complex plot line, taking place at first in the immediate Los Santos area but eventually spilling into San Fierro (based on San Francisco) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas). You play as Carl Johnson, known on the street as CJ. This is an honest effort to create an engaging story about sympathetic characters caught up in a brutal environment that is on par with a movie or novel. Gaming Gangsters Where Vice City took its cues, with tongue firmly in cheek, from the 1980s television series Miami Vice, San Andreas is a sincere homage to early 1990s innercity gangster films like Menace 2 Society and Boyz `N the Hood. This is an honest effort to create an engaging story about sympathetic characters caught up in a brutal environment that is on par with a movie or novel. If that effort hits a few flat notes (you would have to be totally desensitized not to wonder if it's OK to make entertainment out of driveby shootings), it may also mark the first step toward video games growing up. The first thing that fans of earlier GTA games will notice is the range of action is much wider now: Along with shooting, running, and driving, there's now swimming, eating, working out, shopping, and, yes, getting a haircut. All this means the game has a fairly steep learning curve. But, though the pick-up-and-play appeal of Grand Theft Auto III may be long gone, your access to the action becomes fairly transparent after a little practice. My only serious complaint is that, with the controller now crowded with such previously unheard-of functions like "Gang Active" and "Talk Positive," you can drive only with the left analog stick. A minor point, but it makes cars a lot more difficult to handle. Bicycles take on a surprisingly central role. Vehicular Variety It would be hard to surpass the variety of automobiles available in earlier games, and San Andreas wisely does not for the most part try to compete on that score. Instead, it's bicycles of all things that steal the show. The bikes' speed and flexibility are perfect for many of the missions, and there is something about cruising through the streets and basketball courts on a BMX that just feels right. If you play far enough into the game, you will also be rewarded with the chance to fly a number of aircraft, and flying is something Rockstar makes a greater effort to get right this time (welcome news for anyone who struggled with the planes and `copters of the earlier games). Lackluster Graphics--but a Real Feel Graphics--never a huge priority for Rockstar--actually take a step backward from the luscious, tropical look of Vice City. Textures are rendered with only a cursory attention to detail, and contours are often blocky. It scarcely matters, though, because no matter how San Andreas looks, it feels real. This is due in no small part to voice work by an all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Ice T, James Woods, Peter Fonda, and Outkast's Big Boy and a stellar soundtrack with tunes by Soundgarden, 2Pac, Public Enemy, and even a few country classics from the likes of Willie Nelson. But it's not just realistic, San Andreas is also vast, encompassing three big urban centers and huge swaths of rural land (complete with shotgun-toting farmers) between them. This vastness does mean, however, that there can be a lot of tedious driving to get to the missions, which, along with some awkward sequencing of the cut scenes (they are in places stacked one on top of the other), means that there is a bit too much downtime. But never mind the quibbles. Ladies and gentlemen, we have another classic on our hands. --David Stoesz Pros: Astonishingly vast game space Vivid character development Complex, engaging plot Enormous range of available actions Cons: Occasionally awkward game design You can no longer steer cars with the directional buttons Steep learning curve What's Your Strategy? |

Our 4-hour whirlwind tour provided by our local expert Jocelyne Morrison from Time Out for Touring took us into Alberta's second most visited attraction outside of the Rockies: Canada Olympic Park, visited every year by more than 1.3 million people. This is the flagship site of the XV Olympic Winter Games, which were held in Calgary in 1988. It is located just 15 minutes from downtown on the west side towards the Rocky Mountains.
What makes Canada Olympic Park unique is that it continues to function as a multi-purpose competition, training and recreation area that is available year round to athletes as well as the general public. During the winter, almost 300,000 skiers and snowboarders visit the park. It also houses the second largest snow academy in the country, making lessons and programs available to people of all ages and abilities.
During the summer, Canada Olympic Park turns into mountain biking facilities with more than 25 kilometers of trails, an obstacle course, trials park and facilities for BMX bikers and freeride stunts.
We started off with the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum which houses a whole variety of Olympic-themed exhibits and paraphernalia. This is the only Canadian museum devoted to the Olympic Games in Canada, and it is the largest in all of North America. Exhibits on two floors chronicle Canada's participation at the Olympic Winter Games since their inception in 1924.
A particularly fascinating exhibit are the 20 of the 31 Olympic torches, dating back all the way to the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. The Blood, Sweat and Cheers exhibit pays tribute to Canada's Olympic Medal winners at the Salt Lake City Winter Games in 2002. The flags displayed in the museum and in the Plaza represent all the nations that competed in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary.
Key highlights of the Museum are a reproduction of the bobsleigh used by the Jamaican bobsleigh team in the 1988 Olympics (the film "Cool Runnings" was based on this story), an original hockey jacket from 1956 which inspired the 1988 Olympic attire, and medals for all 12 sports that were held in Calgary in the 1988 Olympics.
Snowboarders love the Superpipe, opened in 2002 and the only pipe of its kind in Alberta, with walls that are at least 15 feet high. It is also used for training Canadian athletes to compete at international and Olympic competitions.
Our guide Jocelyne also took us to the Icehouse which is the world's only indoor refrigerated track where luge, bobsleigh and skeleton athletes practice the ever-important push start techniques. All the tracks feature multiple cameras and interval timing mechanisms that allow the athletes to analyze their push-start technique moving from frame to frame in intervals of a fraction of a second. Many foreign teams come to this facility to practice their push-start techniques.
The Ice House features some interesting statistics:
- it is 143 m along (almost the length of one football field) and four stories high
- nine kilometers of steel piping is used to cool the three tracks
- tracks are kept at a constant temperature of -2 to -3 degrees Celsius
- a unique monorail system automatically returns the bobsleigh and skeleton sleds to the push-start area while allowing for continuous training
- a vide system incorporates standard video and the latest DVD playback technology.
After our visit to the Ice House we drove up the hill past the Olympic Bobsleigh Track which includes 14 twists and turns, the place where the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team made their first Olympic appearance and won the hearts of spectators all over the world. It is still used as a Word Cup circuit venue for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events.
Our next stop was the 90 meter ski jump tower - incidentally the highest point in Calgary and today, as the weather was clearing up, we started to get a great view of the downtown area. Jocelyne explained that with today's new ski jumping techniques, the 90 m ski jump can no longer be used since skiers are now able to jump 120 m and more and there would not be enough space for them to land safely. Nevertheless, riding the glass elevator up to the observation level of this tower and peering down the ski jump is an awesome experience.
Jocelyne explained that Canada Olympic Park is also an archeological site where remains have been found that indicate that this hill used to be a buffalo jump, a place that native tribes used to hunt buffalo.
Many of the Canadian Olympic athletes who did so well at the recent 2006 Torino Olympics actually train at Canada Olympic Park, and this year's success of Canadian Olympic athletes bodes well for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.

Getting started in freestyle BMX
Those attracted to freestyle BMX are often in awe of the dazzling displays of tricks and stunts by professional riders. Yet, it is quite astonishing what can be achieved early on in BMX riding. The main requirement for freestyle BMX is an appropriate BMX bike. This does not necessarily mean spending a lot of money as there are certainly some very commendable cheap BMX bikes on the market.
What it does mean however, is that a rider should first seek the advice of a reputable BMX shop. The most convenient shops will be those based online. Staff at a good BMX shop will be able to advise on the best brands, the most suitable models, and the correct size of bike for an individual rider. What is of paramount importance is that a bike used for freestyle riding should be sufficiently strong and durable in order to withstand the significant stresses and unforgiving punishment of freestyle riding.
Once a freestyle BMX bike has been chosen, there are many online instructional videos and DVDs to help put new riders through their paces. It is usually advisable to look at gaining confidence and balance with a few basic flatland tricks such as the bunny hop (lifting both wheels of the ground at once); the wheelie (moving forward with the front of the bike of the ground); and the 180 (quickly turning round on oneself so that both bike and rider are facing in the opposite direction).
Provided steady, careful practice is employed in an appropriate setting, and full protective gear is worn, including helmet and pads, new riders will soon find themselves having fun performing basic tricks and learning new ones. At bmx.co.uk we not only provide great value, quality BMX bikes for beginners, but each purchase is accompanied by a free DVD featuring instructions on performing some of the best-known tricks.

Terry Adams and "Dreams"
In 2008, Terry Adams teamed up with friend/director Mickey Gaidos to produce "Dreams," a solo DVD depicting the riding and lifestyle of Adams, a pro flatland rider. Solo DVDs are fairly common in the realm of flatland, but like everything Terry does, "Dreams" had its own original flavor. The film dug...
