After racing around carefree on your bike all summer long, Autumn may be the time to take a step back and have a look at the condition it is left in. During the summer, many cyclists tend to use their bike far more than they would during the winter months and therefore have probably have put it through its paces. Now that the temperature is starting to cool and it will be used less, is the perfect opportunity to give your bike a good going over.
First things first you should look to clean every component of your bike. Whether you are looking to put it away for the winter or continue riding, it is always good to remove any lasting dirt and grime. By taking your bike apart are carefully cleaning each part, you will both maintain the look of the bike and the performance. If you are not familiar with doing this it is best to research the best way to clean each component before taking it apart. Most parts on a bike can be cleaned using soapy water and a toothbrush is usually a good idea to get into the nooks difficult to reach, however there may be manufacturers recommendations with expert bikes such as Specialized bikes or Cannondale Bikes.
The most important area to pay attention to when cleaning would be the drive system. This can also be cleaned using a brush and some soapy water. It is a good idea to push the pedals round in order to easily reach both the rear derailleur and the chain ring. Once this is washed it will also need to be checked and lubricated to ensure it is kept in top condition. One of the most common problems with the drive system is that bearings can get worn and therefore will need replacing. If you do have worn bearings you will need to replace the bottom bracket.
Checking the breaks is vital to ensure there has been no lasting damage or extensive wear and tear. You brakes are possibly the most important safety feature on your bike and during the wetter Autumn months, will be vital. Whether you have a Trek bike or a Raleigh, you will need to take special precautions around the brakes as cables can get damaged and go unnoticed for a while. You need to ensure that you have checked every cable closely to make sure there is no noticeable damage. If you have disc brakes you need to look down into the disc caliper and check both brake pads move equally to clamp the rotor.
One final thing to ensure is working correctly are the lights on your bike. When the Autumn arrives the daylight hours start to shorten and therefore you will find yourself using your lights more and more. It is highly dangerous to cycle without lights on especially at dusk and night as drivers will be unaware of your presence and may end up harming you. Before continuing riding, it is highly recommended to replace any batteries and securely fix both front and back lights.

March Madness Tournament Odds - South Region
The easiest of the four regions in 2010 NCAA Tournament bracket odds is definitely the South where #1 seed Duke is a heavy favorite. The Blue Devils have such an easy path that they are the even money favorite in college basketball odds at online sportsbooks to win this region. Nothing is ever "easy" in the NCAA Tournament but there is no question that the tournament committee did Duke a lot of favors. The second seed in the South region is Villanova and they are not as good as they were a year ago. The Wildcats are the 3-1 second choice at online sportsbooks.
Duke is a very talented team led by Jon Scheyer, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith. The Blue Devils are not the overall top seed in 2010 NCAA Tournament odds but they get Arkansas Pine Bluff in the first round and it is usually the top seed that gets to face the play-in winner. So it should have been Kansas playing Arkansas Pine Bluff. Duke should have no trouble in the opener and they will face the winner of California and Louisville in the second round. Although both Cal and Louisville have talent, they are both very inconsistent and the Blue Devils should make the Sweet Sixteen without too much trouble. Bet the Duke Blue Devils 1-1 in 2010 South region NCAA Tournament bracket odds at Bodog sportsbook with a 10% deposit bonus and play in the $25,000 bracket buster contest.
Villanova should get past Robert Morris in their opening round game at the bottom of this region and they would then face the winner of Richmond and St. Mary's. That is a much tougher game and the Wildcats are no lock to make it out of the second round. Villanova does have Scottie Reynolds though, so they can never be counted out. Baylor is the third seed in this region and they have a lot of talent but very little experience. There is no question the Bears can reach the Sweet Sixteen and beyond. Stage fright is the only concern for Baylor. The Bears are 11-2 to win the South Region in 2010 NCAA Tournament bracket odds. The weakest of the #4 seeds in this tournament is definitely Purdue. They were a national title contender until Robbie Hummel got hurt. Now they may not make it out of the first round. The Boilermakers are also getting no respect on the odds board either as they are 16-1 in South Region 2010 NCAA Tournament bracket odds. Bet Villanova as 3-1 favorites to win the South region with a 10% bonus!
A better team and one that could upset this entire region is Texas A&M. They play defense and can rebound. If they can hit some outside shots they can win this region as the number five seed. They are 18-1 to win this region and a better bet than Purdue. Sixth-seeded Notre Dame also has a chance since they have Luke Harangody. The Irish have some value at 25-1. Richmond has some talent but probably not enough to win the South region as the #7 seed. California and Louisville are too inconsistent to win this region. St. Mary's also has some talent but probably not enough to win four games in a row. Old Dominion, Utah State, Siena, Sam Houston, Robert Morris and Arkansas Pine Bluff are big longshots.

Am I Nuts? Schwinn Ranger?
I recently picked up a used Schwinn Ranger 2.6 FS from a local bike shop. I use it as a 2nd bike just for short trips & fun. Someone had dropped it off for repairs & never picked it up. It has NEW Weinmann 519 rims (wheels), and a NEW bottom bracket (crank bearings). I installed a more comfortable Avenir saddle that costs about $20. The price of the bike? Sixty bucks...that's all. Total - $80.00. That's half the price of a new one at Target. Because of the new rims & bottom bracket - I think it was a steal. Your thoughts?

"...just for short trips & fun. Someone had dropped it off for repairs & never picked it up."
At least you know it can from a bike shop & not someone's back yard after sitting outside all winter. Bottom bracket failure in discount store Schwinn's is a common occurrence. If the bike shop used a quality bottom bracket - you should be "good to go" for years, providing the bike is properly maintained.
