What kind of crank do i need?
my bike says i have a CH52, Sealed Cartridge 103mm, square taper bottom bracket. Im trying to get a new crank but i dont know which kind to get.
The only thing that matters is the square taper. It is an older style bottom bracket that has a solid cromoly axle that is square and tapered, thus the name. 103mm is the width of the bearing cartridge, referred to as the bottom bracket (BB), and has little to do with your choice of cranks. They work just as well as any other BB, but under a lot of stress they tend to stretch out the crank's hole/attachment point so they get loose and can't be tightened. The positive part is that they are incredibly cheap, and so are the cranksets.
What you do have to worry about is whether you are running a 9 speed cassette (in the rear). The chain is .9 mm narrower than the 8 speed chain. To be on the safe side, you need to get a square taper crankset made for a 9 speed system, as the 9 speed cranks will be compatible with the 8 speed chain. The 8 speed cranks will work, but the shifting might be just a little sloppy.
A good, solid crankset is the Shimano Deore. It doesn't cost too much and lasts for a long time.
