One of the biggest surprises I encountered after moving my family of four into a travel trailer and hitting the road, was the reaction of many people. I got a lot of comments such as...
"Wow, that sounds like fun. It must be great to be well-off enough to be able to do that."
Huh? Okay, I've seen those guys in their $500,000 motorcoaches, too, but not everyone has to be rich and retired to move into an RV or travel trailer and live on the road. In fact, we've found it's cheaper than staying in one place.
Everybody's going to be a bit different, but let's look at a general cost of living, staying in one spot vs. heading out on the open road.
What A Normal Lifestyle Costs
You have to live somewhere so you're going to be paying rent or mortgage. Depending on which one, you're going to be paying something for utilities, garbage, etc. You also have at least one car and most people have two or more -- the average person drives about 1,000 miles per month.
Figure out just your housing and vehicle expenses and I'll bet you pay more by living in one spot than if you hit the road.
What A Nomadic Lifestyle Costs
Assuming you pay cash for your RV or trailer (and I'll cover that in a minute) you're still going to pay to park your rig. And if you want the fancy-schmancy places with pools and clubhouses you'll probably pay $50-$80 per night, or up to $2,400 per month. Or, you can skip the resort areas and hit the state parks. Most we found are in the $20 per night range. We average about $30 per night overall or $900 per month. About what a small-medium apartment would cost (or a studio apartment in some places).
Oh, utilities, garbage, and often wi-fi and cable TV are included in that price. Plus, a lot of people "boondock" which means you're camped someplace free, just using your batteries and holding tanks. Do that a few mights a month and you're really starting to save.
We have one vehicle and don't travel every day, so we're just a little over the national average at 1,200 miles per month. If we stayed in each campground a day or two longer we could cut that down, too.
How You Can Switch From Normal to Nomadic
If you have a house, sell it and use any profit you get to buy your rig. When we got ready we had a $10,000 budget -- if we wanted a bigger rig we would have had to make payments and we didn't want to increase our debt. Even though we see a lot of larger trailers, every month when we DON'T send a payment in we're glad we went this route.
Of course, the other big thing that will allow you to live on the road is having a job that doesn't require "face time" in the office. With high-speed internet access just about everywhere, there are more and more people who could cut the chains and take off -- if they have the guts!
Jay Jennings is a programmer who lives everywhere in the USA with his wife and kids. He's been working from home since 1999 and loves it. If you'd like to follow the adventures of his family on the road and find out more information on how you can do it, too, see http://OurFirstYear.com
Data Cabling Companies Partnering Strategies
Most data cabling companies face a choice of two distinctly different business development paths.
Some spend most of their marketing, sales, and business development resources pursuing large major bid opportunities with Fortune 1000 enterprises and government entities.
Other data cabling companies do a lot more in the small business space, where installations typically involve networks of anywhere from 10-100 nodes.
However it can be very difficult to profitably market to customers that really only need your services once… with perhaps some small add-on work a few years down the road.
This is because your customer acquisition costs can be quite high relative to the rather limited size of the job.
Think about it…. How much can you really afford to spend on marketing, sales and business development expenses when the upside potential of the projects is say $1,000 - $5,000?
That’s why for many data cabling companies that want to service small businesses, it makes more sense to partner with those technology providers that already have existing relationships with small business owners and managers.
How can you go about finding these movers and shakers that can not only drastically cut the length of your sales cycle, but also provide predictability and stability through constant referrals?
Consider these 5 ways to locate like-minded technology providers that are eager to work with data cabling companies like yours.
- Look for Those Small Business Tech Providers that Don’t Do Cabling In-House. At the risk of stating the obvious, make sure those VARs, consultants, solution providers, MSPs, and integrators that you choose to partner with are complimentary to your core cabling skills, and not a direct or indirect competitor.
- Check Out B2B Networking Events. Generally those technology providers that get involved with chamber of commerce organizations, lead sharing groups, and local expos are pretty receptive to building their businesses up on a variety of fronts.
- Go Where Techies Hang Out. Often-overlooked, IT user groups can be a great way to network both with potential partners and those that routinely subcontract work to data cabling companies like yours.
- Keep Your Ears Open at Training Events. Ever been to a reseller or channel partner event from an IT giant like Microsoft or Cisco? These confabs are often bursting at the seams with those technology providers eager for opportunity. The key thing… network with those who don’t fulfill the needs that you do.
- Ask Your Accountant or Attorney to Facilitate Introductions. Chances are, your trusted business advisors like your accountant or attorney have clients that are VARs, consultants, solution providers, MSPs, and integrators. So don’t be shy about letting your trusted business advisors know that you’d appreciate any relevant, appropriate matchmaking. After all, you do already have one important thing in common… you’ve selected the same trusted business advisor.
Most data cabling companies are either excellent marketers or destined to starve themselves out of business. This can be an especially daunting challenge if you work primarily with small businesses. In this short article, we looked at 5 simple, proven, powerful strategies for leveraging the existing relationships of other technology providers to get an instant foot in the door. How can we watch TV if there is no cable service available and we cannot get a dish?
Are there any other options? I didn't know this was possible in our area. It's not a rural area, its just outside a small city, which is about an hour away from a very major city.
There is cable service available within a mile but not down the road we are moving to. The houses there have about 4 wooded acres each on the north side of a large hill, so apparently we will be unable to get a dish also, because we don't have a clear view of the southern sky.
They are unlikely to run cable down through there because there aren't enough houses on that particular road to justify it.
I don't think we can live without the TV!! (Of course we can, but we love our shows that we follow.)
Are there any other options out there for us? We live in south central PA.
Do you USE Verizon for phone service? If so, check and see if they have FIOS in operation there....
Why don't you and your neighbors Petition the Cable company for service, and if that doesn't work contact your County Commissioners, because THEY contracted with the Cable company to provide service to all the County landowners....if they can't deliver, the cable company may be in violation of their LEASE.....
Yeah the commissioners leased their county back in the late 70's to the cable company.....
