Home inspectors come from all sorts of backgrounds and experiences. There is not one single background that is the ideal background for one to become a good home inspector.
At first glance a person might believe that a general contractor may be the best background for becoming a home inspector. I once inspected the home of a general contractor and he had some serious safety issues going in his home. Especially in the areas that he had personally built himself.
Roofer is another former occupation that people who become home inspectors may have. I have seen roofs installed by roofers that were terrible. A person who is a roofer should know very well how to install a roof and the flashings. A roofer should know all this information within a short amount of time, such as a few months. Beyond that time frame there is not much learned from swinging a hammer for years and years.
Engineers and architects have good knowledge of foundations, designs and structural components. This experience does not mean that they have knowledge of other areas of a home.
HVAC, plumbers and electricians are other fields of experience that home inspectors sometimes have. These areas of knowledge are nice to have. Once again vast knowledge does not mean that the person knows about all areas of a home.
The best background for a good home inspector is one who has taken an home inspection course. Home inspection courses and classes teach a person on all areas of a home. Even if a person has been a roofer for years he will learn a lot regarding all the other areas of a home.
Despite all this, the quality of the home inspection you receive will depend upon the inspector himself. Like all occupations there are people who put in the efforts needed to do an excellent job and those who fall far short of a good effort. A thorough home inspection should take at least 2.5 hours, perhaps longer if a larger home or a home on a crawl space. It comes down to a well rounded education in home inspection and the quality of the inspectors effort.
