Shimano's recessed cleat and clipless pedal technology, called SPD, revolutionized the cycling shoe/pedal interface. Since then, decades of legendary "in the dirt" dependability, reliability, and sheer endurance have made SPD the world's go-to pedal technology. Shimano's PD-M324 clipless/clip pedals continue the SPD tradition but with a twist. One side of the pedal features a fully featured SPD-specific clip interface that provides extra efficiency and security for intense riding. The other side of the pedal, however, features a standard platform for use with street shoes--perfect for impromptu trips to the grocery store and other informal joyrides. The dual-side design makes the PD-M324 pedals ideal for people who use their bike for errands and training alike. The pedals come with one pair of two-bolt SPD cleats. The hub--an affordable and reliable version of the multi-speed hubs growing in popularity at the time--caught the attention of the industry. So much so that by 1965, Yoshizo Shimano--the youngest son of the company founder in Japan--opened an office in New York. Shimano's goal was to get quicker product feedback and to provide technical and warranty assistance to retailers selling bikes equipped with Shimano parts. Though Shimano American has grown from that first modest office staffed by only three people to a full distribution center with sales and marketing offices, its goals are the same: listen to customers and meet their needs for both bicycle and fishing products.

Clipless Pedal Cleats

There are many things to learn when it comes to the sports of cycling. But you have to ask yourself these few questions first. Do you know about cycling efficiency? Do you also know that wearing 'clipless' and toe-clips pedals can recycle your energy for pedaling?

Experts have said that an important factor in keeping your pedaling movements smoothly with the most power is to apply pedaling power throughout the whole pedaling circle.

The pedaling circle can be divided into two strokes, namely the 'downstroke' and upstroke. Then there are further terms that coin the circle, the bottom and top.

Most beginners make the mistake of pulling their feet upwards vertically. In fact, cycling experts have stated that you should instead pull back your feet and only slightly up for the best effect. This translates into the feet making a more natural arc that powers your pedaling.

'Downstroke' is the most powerful stroke of all. It is most responsible for all your pedaling efforts to rotate the gear trains and then the wheels.

As for the bottom part, new cyclists often jerk when their legs extend with their feet at the bottom of the stroke circle. This can easily be solved by adjusting the proper saddle or seat height beforehand.

Experts also say that the top part of the pedaling stroke is a stop point. In order to smooth the transition, you have to imagine yourself as if you are stepping onto a staircase step and raising your foot.

If done right, your cycling stroke will resemble the professionals. It often takes time to practice the individual segments of proper pedaling.

Another technique in smoothing your pedaling stroke is called the 'ankling'. This means at the bottom of your stroke, your heel will be slightly upwards and during the 'downstroke', your heel is supposed to be downwards a little.

Experienced riders also do not make unnecessary movements. If you observe them in cycling tournaments, their hips and shoulders do not rock. It is as if only their legs are moving like pistons. This enables them to ride in a straighter line or path of action. There is absolutely no jerky movements whatsoever in this case. This habit raises efficiency.

All the techniques cannot be perfected without getting the right pedals to do the job for you. Every cyclists who are serious into transforming their cycling performance should wear 'clipless' or toe-clip pedals. It is the basis that makes efficient pedaling possible. Some people worry about wearing these special pedal types for safety reasons. However, once learned, the benefits are aplenty.

Now that you know how to pedal your bike, take the time to read about mens cycling shorts be sure to know what is lycra.

Why Mountain Bike Shoes?

To increase your enjoyment of mountain biking, the right shoe is essential. A shoe designed specifically for the mountain biker is the way to go.

Mountain bike shoes come in a variety of prices, from the inexpensive $70 range, up to over $400. The amount of money you pay depends entirely on whether or not you are a casual, once-a-month rider, a serious hobbyist, or someone who competes in races - either amateur or professional.

What is it about mountain bike shoes that make them a) important to have and b) so expensive?

Shoes designed specifically for cycling have stiff soles, which helps the cyclist in transferring the power from his legs and feet to the pedals and thence to the chain for greater speed. Since the road cyclist is expected to be on his or her bike at all times without having to do a great deal of walking, they normally have a protruding cleat which slots into the recess on their pedals.

A protruding cleat would be of no use to the mountain biker, who quite frequently has to get off the bike and wheel or carry it around obstacles. So mountain bike shoes have recessed cleats, that won't interfere with walking, and aren't made with a totally rigid sole, but one that will give just a little bit.

There are dozens of mountain biking shoes on the market. Men will find a wider variety of designs then women, nevertheless there are quite a few styles designed specifically for the smaller foot of the average woman.

What makes the mountain bike shoe so important?
The occasional biker usually doesn't bother with toe clips or clipless pedals....they just hop on their bike and they're away. However, the serious cyclist wants to get all the power he or she can out of a pedaling, and with the shoe firmly attached to the pedal - either with a toeclip or by a cleat, the cyclist can pull upward on the pedal as well as simultaneously pushing downward on the other pedal, which increases the speed of the bike.

What makes the mountain bike shoe so expensive?
Well, as with any shoe, the price comes down to what the shoe is made of. The lighter the shoe is, the better for the racer. But, lightness comes expensive. Carbon fiber soles are the lightest soles on the market - carbon fiber is more expensive to produce than injection-molded plastic, or plastic and fiberglass.

However, the average rider should be able to get a pair of mountain biking shoes for less than a hundred dollars.

Triathlon Bike Shoe Help?

Okay, well this year is the first year we are allowed to wear "clipless shoes/ pedals" for the bike portion of our triathlons.

I have no idea what I need to buy for my bike. I have the traditional pedals currently that come with my road bike, for like regular running shoes.

These are the shoes I want:

http://bike.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/products/shoes/road/product.-code-SH-TR30.-type-.html

And these pedals seem good, and not too pricey:

http://bike.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/products/pedals/road/product.-code-PD-R540-L.-type-.html

But what are cleats? And do I need them with the shoes I selected and the pedals I want?

If an experienced road biker and help in what the difference between pedals and cleats are it would be appreciated, thanks! And if I even need cleats with those above shoes?

Pretty much explain shoes, pedals and cleats to me! :)

THX SO MUCHH! =]

Cleats (also referred to as SPD) are basically the attachment that fits onto your cycling shoe. It's what attaches to the pedal. In this case it'll look like this:
http://www.marcel-malitz.de/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/spd-sl_neu.JPG

Don't worry about buying some they come with the pedals ;)

I have those pedals that you selected, they're very good for the money. Just to warn you though, the pedals you have selects take SPD-SL fittings, like with most road pedal fittings, you probably wont be able to walk in those shoes very well/at all without looking like a drunk penguin as the fittings protrude and the shoes are very stiff.

In Mountain Bike pedals and shoes, the SPD fitting is more flush with the sole and the sole is a bit more bendy, enabling you to walk without embarrassment :)
