Ellen Hopkins's semi-autobiographical verse novel, Crank, reads like a Go Ask Alice for the 21st century. In it, she chronicles the turbulent and often disturbing relationship between Kristina, a character based on her own daughter, and the "monster," the highly addictive drug crystal meth, or "crank." Kristina is introduced to the drug while visiting her largely absent and ne'er-do-well father. While under the influence of the monster, Kristina discovers her sexy alter-ego, Bree: "there is no perfect daughter, / no gifted high school junior, / no Kristina Georgia Snow. / There is only Bree." Bree will do all the things good girl Kristina won't, including attracting the attention of dangerous boys who can provide her with a steady flow of crank. Soon, her grades plummet, her relationships with family and friends deteriorate, and she needs more and more of the monster just to get through the day. Kristina hits her lowest point when she is raped by one of her drug dealers and becomes pregnant as a result. Her decision to keep the baby slows her drug use, but doesn't stop it, and the author leaves the reader with the distinct impression that Kristina/Bree may never be free from her addiction. In the author's note, Hopkins warns "nothing in this story is impossible," but when Kristina's controlled, high-powered mother allows her teenage daughter to visit her biological father (a nearly homeless known drug user), the story feels unbelievable. Still, the descriptions of crystal meth use and its consequences are powerful, and will horrify and transfix older teenage readers, just as Alice did over 20 years ago. --Jennifer Hubert Summary:Kristina Georgia Snow is the perfect daughter: gifted high school junior, quiet, never any trouble. But on a trip to visit her absentee father, Kristina disappears and Bree takes her place. Bree is the exact opposite of Kristina -- she's fearless. Through a boy, Bree meets the monster: crank. And what begins as a wild, ecstatic ride turns into a struggle through hell for her mind, her soul -- her life.About the Author:•Ellen Hopkins is the New York Times bestselling author of Crank, Burned, Impulse, Glass, Identical, Tricks, and Fallout. Nebraska walleye fishing can be a rewarding activity. The following tips apply to places like Lake McConaughy, Sherman, and Merritt which are popular destinations, but you also have a gaggle of other waters to explore. Most of these lakes will produce dynamite fishing if you're willing to change your ways and stray from tradition. One secret that will really help your walleye fishing in the Corn Husker state is to fish the right lakes. In the early spring time you'll find it rewarding if you fish smaller, shallower, dingy lakes. These waters warm up very quickly and it's child's play to catch these walleyes. Pitching jigs to rip rap or rocky shorelines is an all around favorite at this latitude.
Otherwise you have some excellent tail water areas to investigate. These are good areas to visit if you only have an hour or two to fish, since you'll be shore casting. Another great tactic for spring walleyes is shore casting stickbaits at night along the rip-rap dam faces that you find in many Nebraska reservoirs. Keep your retrieve slow and steady and work from 10 feet to 1 foot from the rip rap.
As the waters warm up, we find larger lakes start producing fish as they become post spawn. A big misconception with walleyes says the fishing is tough during post spawn. This simply isn't the case. Post spawn walleyes will bite and fishing will be very good provided you look in the right areas and do the right things. Most anglers fish either to deep or they fail to execute a good open water trolling program for suspended walleyes. Suspended walleyes are very common on the reservoirs with shad or crappies for the main forage base in Nebraska. White bass often tip you off to good locations - you just need to make a couple small adjustments to get the walleyes. Use large baits like number 9 Shadraps and keep setting your depths lower and lower until you run out of whites. Now you're in walleye territory.
With dog days you see the largest reservoirs in the state will produce good walleye fishing. Lake McConaughy is the place to be with it's nearly 35,000 acres. Again, many anglers struggle because they fish good spots, rather than fishing fish. During the summer period walleyes will be spread out horizontally and vertically in the water column. Trolling crankbaits on structure and especially open water is an effective method for taking mid summer walleyes on Big Mac. Fall fishing again becomes productive for the majority of the walleye angling public in Nebraska, simply because more fish are doing the same thing, groups form, and you get competition within a group of walleyes for bait. Traditionally slab spoons in depths of 20 to 35 feet become the popular method. However, learning to dial in leadcore line with extreme precision will really put fall walleyes in the boat when they get deep. Another great option for fall walleyes on Big Mac is to cast cranks at rocky points in 4 to 8 feet of water. It's a multi-species method that produces fast action for whatever predators are up feeding.
Visit Inland Walleye today and you'll learn what it takes to put quality Nebraska eyes in the boat under the toughest conditions. You'll learn unheard of walleye dynamics that will change the way you find and catch walleyes. Click on this link http://www.inlandwalleye.com
What to Look for When Buying a Recumbent Bike
Once something you would stop and stare at, recumbent bikes are quickly becoming more popular amongst the biking community. A recumbent bike is a cycle where the rider sits in a laid back reclining position, with the pedals in front of them.
Many riders ride recumbent bikes because they are much more comfortable that regular bikes. The body's weight is more evenly distributed over a larger area. Instead of all your weight being on your hands, feet and sitting area, your weight is supported by your entire back and bottom.
While it may not look like it at first glance, recumbent bikes are very fast. Their design is aerodynamically superior to traditional bikes. In the recumbent position there is less of a frontal profile to create drag, allowing for less resistance and more speed. In fact, a recumbent bike actually holds the world speed record for a bicycle. In 1934, this variation of bike was banned from international racing due to having such a big aerodynamic advantage.
Recumbents have safety advantages over road bikes, and other regular bikes too. Since you sit lower to the ground you less distance to fall and the severity of your impact is dramatically reduced. With a feet forward design it very unlikely that you will come to a complete stop and get fired over the handlebars, which, as any experienced rider will tell you, exposes you to serious head and neck injuries. Braking and stopping power is also much improved due to your low center of gravity.
Features
If you're interested in buying a recumbent, then check out these features to get more acquainted with this increasingly popular style of bike:
Wheelbase: Recumbent bikes have three main wheelbase set-ups: long, short and compact. On a long wheelbase version, the pedals are located between the front and rear wheels. On the short wheelbase model, the pedals are in front of the front wheel and compact wheel base models have pedals very close to the front wheel or above it.
Wheel sizes: The rear wheel on recumbents can range from 16 inches to 700c. The front wheel is usually a smaller tyre. The most common wheel combination of wheel sizes on the recumbent bikes is a 26 inch rear wheel and 20 inch front wheel.
Steering: When it comes to steering, recumbents are broken down into three main categories; over seat or above seat, under seat and center or pivot steering. Depending on what kind of steering you prefer you may opt for a bike with larger "Superman" handlebars to help you better control the bike.
Drive Systems: Just like their traditional cousins, recumbent bikes are usually rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive options are possible due to the proximity of the crank to the front wheel. There is also a unique system called Pivot-boom front wheel drive on some recumbents, too.
Suspension: Just like traditional bikes, recumbents come equipped with more and better suspension systems. Front and rear suspensions are very common on recumbents as well as a variety of systems like coil, air sprung and elastomer suspensions.
Fairings: Just like a motorcycles, many recumbent bikes have fairings to increase the aerodynamic properties of these bikes. Not only do they reduce drag but they also keep the rider warmer and dryer in nasty weather.
Variations
Just like road bikes and mountain bikes, the recumbents come in a variety of setups with different options for riders looking for different things. What variation will suit you best depends on a host of factors. Check these out and see if any fit you:
Low-racers: More common in Europe, these recumbents usually have two 20" or 26" wheels or a 26" in the rear and a 20" in the front. The seat is between the wheels rather than above them and provides an extremely reclined position. If you're looking for aerodynamic heaven, this is it.
High-racers: These versions have two large wheels with the rider's legs sitting above the wheels. This style is more stable than low-racers, and very popular.
Mountain Bike Recumbents: With the right tyres, gearing and a longer wheelbase, these bikes are awesome off road and on unpaved roads.
Crank Forward Recumbents: These variations provide a seating position between a traditional recumbent and traditional bikes.
Tandem Recumbents: Built for two, these versions are marked by having the stokers crankset under the captain's seat.
Recumbent Trikes: These bikes are available in two different versions. The delta has two rear wheels and one front one while the tadpole has the reverse set up.
Handycycles: Another form of recumbent bike, made especially for the handicapped who don't have much or any use of their legs. These are often referred to as hand powered vehicles (HPV).
Hand and Foot Recumbent Trikes: If you're looking for a full body workout then check out these recumbent variations that use hand power and leg power to propel you along.

are ten speed road cranksets compatible with 6 speed cassettes?
i have an 85 schwinn that i have restored. i wanted to make it the original number of gears (12) so i got a double crank set. so im running 2x6 with friction shifters. i accidentally got a 10speed compatible crank set. what kind of chain can i get that will work alright with this setup? i think an 8speed chain would work but im not sure. crankset: FSA Energy. freewheel: 6spd shimano
10S crankset takes a very narrow chain. 6 speed cassette takes an older version of chain which is several mm thicker than the 10S. In order for the chain to work on a 10S you should have the narrow one, right? But it will not work on your 6S cassette. In this case you'll choose a 6S or 7S chain which will also work on the crankset. However please be reminded that older 6S or 7S chains, I guess will significantly do some damage to your crankset as the chains are mostly made of heavy steel. Whereas the 10S cranksets, although advertised as stiff, have softer skins than the older 6S models of cranksets.
10S chains, although made of hardened alloy are a little friendly with the cranksets' skin.
So you can take your pick now. Contend yourself using the existing bike and then save the expensive crankset for the meantime while upgrading your bicycles to be compatible to a much lighter 10S components.
It is also advisable to have your bicycle components compatible with each other. That's the reason why Gruppo or Groupset was born.
And also, you have to change your existing bottom bracket to be a 10S compatible which has entirely different setting than the previous models of bottom brackets. A different bottom bracket tool is also required for its installation.
Other alternative is, if you are really keen on using the 10S crankset then replace its chainring with the old one, as long as they have the same BCD.
PEZ Previews: The Gent Six Day
One of the general rules at Interbike is that the things you want the most are also the things you just can't have... It makes sense that a company that "kicks" - "Ass" would go ahead and cover both body parts in the phrase, so shoes had to come after saddles. With that they bring the top line R1.
