The most important pieces of equipment for any hockey player are their skates. Hockey players are notoriously picky when it comes to skates, whether they are for inline or ice hockey. The most important factor when choosing hockey skates is comfort. Hockey skates should be snug without being uncomfortable. Besides the standard sizing, most skates come in regular and wide options. It is important that you try on skates before purchasing them. If you find a good deal on a pair of skates through the internet, it is always a good idea to try them on in a store before buying.
Most major skate manufacturers design their skates to fit about 1-1.5 sizes below your normal shoe size. For example, a size 10 shoe should buy a size 8.5-9 hockey skate. This includes Mission skates, which recently changed their sizing to align with these standards.
An even more customized fit can be attained through a process called skate baking. This process involves heating your skates to about 180 degrees for a few minutes, then wearing them until they cool. Skate baking softens the skate and allows the padding to mold around your foot. Skate baking can shorten the breaking-in process.
The other factor to consider when buying inline hockey skates are the wheels and bearings. Let us first discuss wheels. Inline hockey wheels come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. Softer wheels are designed for indoor use, while harder wheels are better for outdoor surfaces. The size of the wheel is also extremely important. You must look up your skate brand's wheel set-up in order to select the correct size wheel. For example, "Hi-Lo" setups are very common among skate manufacturers. This type of set-up places larger wheels in the heel of the boot and smaller wheels at the toe. When purchasing new wheels it is crucial that you know the correct wheel sizes to buy.
Finally, hockey bearings are designed to make the wheel spin freely. Bearings are metal rings that are placed inside the wheels. Bearings come in a variety of grades, rated based on quality. The ABEC scale, which goes in odd numbers from 1-9, is designed to rate bearing precision. For example, the most expensive skates come standard with ABEC 9 bearings, while cheaper skates have ABEC 3 or 5 bearings standard. It is commonly believed that better bearings will make the skater go faster, but there is no evidence to suggest that ABEC 9 bearings are any faster than lower grades.
This article has provided a general overview of what to look for when purchasing new inline skates, wheels, and bearings. There hundreds of skate models on the market, all with subtle differences. If possible take each skate model for a test-skate before purchase. Every skater prefers their own fit and feel. Finding yours will ultimately help you become a better skater.

Parts of your bike – What are you riding?
Everybody knows it. You need a new bike and you go to the biggest bicycle shop in your town. There are so many bikes that are really cool but which one will fulfil your needs? You ask the nice guy behind the counter. Well, he shows you several bikes. The expensive mountain bike for the more professional rider, the light racing cycle for competition, the more common road bike, the electric bike for lazy rider and a few mountain bikes in special offer. But which parts make the real difference in quality and in pricing?
-
Let's start with the most important component of a bike, the frame. This is the hearth of every bike. No matter if it's a full suspension mountain bike, a racing cycle or a cheap road bike. No frame, no bike. Simple. Of course the frame is the most expensive part of your bike and there are so many different types. They differ in weight, size, optic, style, material, price, … and so on. At this point you should make your decision what type of bike you would like to ride in the near future. -
The second bike component is the shifting system. They also differ in several things but this depends on your riding style. The shifting system of a racing cycle will be really different in comparison to the shifting system of a mountain bike. -
Another important parts are the two wheels. Could you imagine to ride a bike on or off road without wheels? Me neither! The two wheels are called the wheelset. This wheelset consists of the axle, the hub, the spokes and the rims. You need a special wheelset for nearly every type of riding. -
Not a very important part but more a comfortable part is the fork. Well for most bikes and riding types the fork is very important and must be very special but what it does is to absorb the road holes to make your ride comfortable. -
Safety first? Of course. Your bike needs a braking system. The two big ones are the disc brakes and the rim brakes known as V-brakes. There are also some differences in weight, field of application, performance and price.
As you can see it all starts with your decision what type of riding you prefer. Once you experience the type that suits you best you can choose some exclusive parts for your bike.

Can anyone recommend me a good strong light wheelset for city-ridden disc MTB?
I ride an MTB bike to work and back, 15 miles a day. It's already evolved to be a fast bike, with big front cogs and a tight back cog. I only use it on roads in London.
I need to replace my wheels. though maybe only my back, and want a strong and light wheel. I can see myself paying up to £200 for a wheel.
Your advice please!
For £200, you could get one built to your own specification.
The last wheels I had built were £120 for the rear and around £85 for the front, but that was about 3 years ago.
I have an MTB based hybrid, with disks, and the wheels on that have rims by Alexrims, and Shimano hubs. These are the standard wheels, and they are both strong and light
