Thermos Nissan 26-Ounce Travel Companion Stainless-Steel Insulated Bottle List Price: $35.00 Sale Price: $20.94 |
|
Virtually unbreakable, this lightweight, vacuum-insulated thermos travels to work or recreation easily, and for hours afterward, coffee, tea, or broth will still be hot. Or lemonade, iced tea, or a sports drink will still be chilled. Tapered toward the top and slim enough (11 inches high, 3 inches in diameter at bottom) to safely pour with one hand, it slips into a briefcase or backpack. Pouring is a snap--twist off the cup, which holds 6 ounces of liquid, twist the stopper a few turns and pour through a no-drip slot (there's one for righthanders, another for lefthanders) without removing the stopper. Fine threading ensures the stopper seals tightly, while the exterior has a handsome satin finish. The smooth interior cleans with sponge or cloth, and preheating or prechilling with hot or cold water is recommended. --Fred Brack |

The Flying Scotsman List Price: $5.98 Sale Price: $2.00 |
|
Silver-screen sports stories rarely revolve around the big and brawny, but the small and scrappy, like Sean Astin in Rudy or Toby Maguire in Seabiscuit. For Scottish cycling sensation Graeme Obree (Trainspotting's Jonny Lee Miller), the biggest obstacle isn't physical, but financial--and psychological. From 1993 to 1995, when most of The Flying Scotsman takes place, he's a bike-shop owner and courier who dreams of turning pro (Laura Fraser plays his supportive spouse). After Rev. Baxter (Brian Cox returning to his native Scotland) sets him up with supplies, and fellow courier Malky (The Lord of the Rings' Billy Boyd) agrees to manage him, Obree sets out to break the one-hour world record. He starts by building a bicycle from spare parts, a move that recalls Anthony Hopkins' eccentric racer in The World's Fastest Indian. Obree's money woes are further complicated by a battle with manic depression, which is handled sensitively, if superficially, i.e. it isn't made clear whether he ever receives treatment. Though he'll break several records before the film is over, the World Cycling Federation (represented by former James Bond villain Steven Berkoff) makes him jump through several demeaning hoops to get there. As for Miller, he's convincing as a cyclist (Obree serves as one of his stand-ins), though Boyd provides the bulk of the charisma. Nonetheless, the real-life champ deserves recognition for his achievements, and Mackinnon's movie is as a sympathetic testament to a true talent. --Kathleen C. Fennessy Based on the incredible true story of amateur cyclist Graeme Obree, who breaks the world one-hour record on a bike he made out of washing machine parts. |

About Planet Bike In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment. Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact. Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists. |

When considering buying a motorized vehicle for use around town, most people stick to looking at cars or motorcycles, but there are some other choices you may not have considered. For instance, an electric scooter can bridge the gap between bike and motorcycle by providing you with a simple to use, easy and cheap to fuel vehicle that gets you from place to place as fast as you need to go. Unlike as with a traditional bicycle, an electric scooter does not require pedaling and can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour, but it does not require you to get a motorcycle license to operate it, either.
An ebike scooter is very cheap to buy and operate. Because it runs on an electric battery, the only fuel you need to put into it comes out of your electric bill, and that is not much at all. Usually, it comes out to around ten cents for a 25 mile charge, as opposed to gas, which can cost up to thirty or forty times that price. The vehicle itself is cheaper, as well. Scooters typically range in price from just under a thousand to five thousand dollars, unlike cars which start from ten thousand, or motor cycles which start somewhere in between the two.
Ebike scooters are environmentally friendly as well, since they do not produce any harmful exhaust as they operate. The only pollution from an ebike comes from whatever the local power plant puts out and the possibility of improper battery disposal. Ebikes do use high capacity batteries though, which must be disposed of correctly and cannot just be thrown out. Fortunately, these high capacity batteries also last a very long time so this does not come up often.
Motor scooters can be operated by anyone who can ride a bike and they do not require a special license to drive them. Of course, children should probably not be using a motor scooter, but they make great substitutes for bikes on longer errands like getting groceries or commuting to and from work across town.
These motor scooter ebikes do not need pedaling, although it is an option on many of them. Most scooter types were designed to let the rider sit down and enjoy the ride. This way, you can get to where you are going without getting out of breath, and the electric powered motor can reach speeds a person would have to work very hard to attain.
Daniel Bing lives and works in south Florida where he is an avid cyclist. He cruises the sunshine with his electric cruiser bike, and actually owns two ebikes. The other is a folding ebike he uses for commuting. You can visit Dan at http://www.uptownebike.com
Bicycle Carriers on Buses
Although the bus is a convenient and comfortable way of travelling, some people choose to use bikes instead, may it be for physical or fitness purposes or financial issues. But, imagine yourself pedaling 50 kilometers to work or riding your bike through rain or snow.
Public buses have a device called bicycle racks attached to the front where passengers/bikers can mount their bikes if they decide to take a bus home or during emergencies such as flat tires and heavy rain. It gives people a choice to avoid riding bikes in dark, uphill and uncomfortable biking trails. It also allows cyclists to take advantage of bus transportation for extremely long commutes.
Initially, bike racks were only used on certain buses that traveled on a bridge with no bike lanes. And the first bike carriers were installed on selected buses only. But nowadays, most of the public buses have bike racks to accommodate those individuals with bikes that also want to travel via bus.
Bus bike racks are composed of metal bars that are long, thin and oval-shaped with a space in the middle. On the lower part is a piece of metal where the tires of your bike will sit on. Another foldable metal bar will secure the front wheel.
Basic steps in unloading your bike includes removing any items attached to your bike like water bottles. Then, pull the bicycle rack down if it is folded and put your bike onto the rack and make sure that the wheels are in the slot. Last is to raise the support bar and put it at the top of the front wheel. When it comes to unloading, it is just as simple as loading.
All you have to do is raise the support arm of the tire of your bike and lift it out of the rack. If the rack is empty, fold up the rack (but some buses have electronic bike racks in which the driver will lower or fold the carriers back in place) and make sure that it is locked into place before signaling the driver that you are clear of.
It is very important to use safety precautions like giving signals or communicating with the driver before mounting or dismounting your bike. And to protect yourself from any accidents on the road, always load and unload your bikes from the passenger side of the bus and make sure to move away from the bus immediately after dismounting your bike. Bus bike racks are safe and very easy to use.

Can you power an electric vehicle with a bicycle generator? How many bike generators would you need?
I understand that you can use a bicycle generator to power a battery, but I am not very good at understanding basic electronic processes. I know that an electric vehicle (EV) uses a lot of electricity, and takes about 6-7 hours to charge overnight when using a regular wall outlet (in the US.) I know that bicycle generators don't produce enough electricity to charge up a car in one session on the bike, but is it possible to store enough bicycle generated energy to charge up an EV? Can you use two bicycle generators to power up one battery that you could then plug the car in to, after is has been fully charged up? I'd also appreciate information on where to find a good bicycle generator, or an idiot's guide to making one, as I am not technologically savvy in the electronics department. Thankyou!
you can produce about 150 Watts with one bike generator, At 12 volts that is 12.5 amps. An EV Charger at 12 volts is pulling anywhere form 7-30 Amps. So Two Bike Generators would put out 300 watts and that is 25 amps and that would be enough to charge an EV in about 7 hours. Id like to see you ride your bike with 2 generators on it for 7 hours. but anyway its good that your thinking outside the box. Stay ALT.
