Schwinn 231 Exercise Bike Pros And Cons
The Schwinn 231 Exercise Bike is a home use model, but it's a lot like a commercial gym exercise bicycle. There are several ways a commercial bike doesn't work very well at home anyway. For example, gym machines are very heavy and difficult to move. This is a recumbent bike and so it's well known for several reasons.
Here are some of the pros and cons of the 231 that you may not know.
The Schwinn 231 Pros.
Perfect seating position since it's a recumbent.
Known for extra comfortable seat.
Ride in silence so you can listen to music or videos.
Heavy construction so little rocking and swaying.
Lots of electronic workouts to fight boredom.
Built in fan for cooling breeze.
Step through frame so easy to get on and off.
You can order online and get free shipping.
Cons to watch on the 231 Exercise Bike
Not as heavy as a commercial machine.
Bigger than uprights so it takes up more room.
Not the cheapest, but much less than many.
Though not as heavy as gym machines, it's still quite heavy to move.
Some assembly may be required.
The Schwinn 231 Recumbent Exercise Bike isn't as heavy as a big commercial machine, but it's well suited for home use. It's plenty heavy enough for hard use, but light enough to be moved where you need it. If you're looking at recumbent bikes, owners say this is a solid choice. That's a real plus too... There are lots of owners, so it's easy to read owner comments online.

Need advice on bike seat and handlebar height/gloves.?
Hi all,
I'm a novice/intermediate rider. Most of my cycling is around town/short commuting and I'm only recently getting into longer rides. I'm wondering if anyone out there can recommend a bike seat for women. I have one with extra padding and a wide saddle, but I think maybe it's too wide for longer rides... I always end up very sore, and haven't yet developed a "callous." Any advice on female friendly seats?
Also, my wrists and hands always end up hurting (sometimes even with little twinges of electricity-like sensation) and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good pair of gloves. Or if anyone has ever raised their handlebars to deal with this type of problem. My arms are disproportionately short for my torso... wondering if its the handlebar height.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
A big, wide, and softly padded seat does not guarantee comfort. Usually the wide, overly padded monstrosities guarantee pain. What does give you comfort is a "seat that fits your meat," where your weight is resting on your sit bones. One of the leaders in bicycle seats anatomically designed for women is Terry. All good bike shops should carry their seats. Ask for help at your local bike shop.
Gloves will help, but not a lot. Despite all the hype, no brand name is really a whole lot better than any other glove with the same features. They are likely to have been manufactured in the same plant, the only differences being the logo either sewn on or embroidered into the gloves. You need to get the weight off your hands. Also, use a variety of hand positions, grasping the bar in a number of different ways as you ride. If you have a flat bar bike, putting bar ends on it helps a lot.
The advice to check your bike's fit is good. If you bought your bike at a bike shop, they should do this for you for free. If not, they deserve to be paid for fitting your bike to you as best it can. It is well worth the price because riding a bike that fits is a pleasure. Riding one that doesn't fit is torture -- such as a really sore butt and tingling hands. The aching back is next.
