Early 90's Trek 2100 Composite (carbon fiber) or 99' Cannondale R300 triple road bike?
This will be my first road bike purchase and need some assistance. Both bike are around the same price 350-400. I've heard that the R300 is really stiff, will the carbon fiber make a big difference in weight and ride quality? I was leaning towards the Cannondale because it's newer and IMO it looks cooler. Any help would be great!
Never buy a used carbon fiber bike unless you know the person who owned it AND the frame is in perfect condition. Even the smallest ding or sctatch on carbon fiber can compromise it's integrity. However, since the 2100 is carbon fiber wrapped fiberglas tubes between aluminum lugs it is much more reliable.
Same thing goes for Cannondale used stuff. Because of the propensity for these bikes to fail without warning (called "sudden catastrophic failure"), Cannondale had a very short frame warranty and also earned the nickname "Crack'n'Fail"... I have seen many used Cannondales for sale that have hairline cracks that the owner wasn't even aware of.
