Due to injuries or the physical pounding of running or jogging many of us cut back on our outdoor training. If we want to continue our level of fitness and maintain the emotional and physical benefits that go with it, biking is an alternative. If like me I enjoyed running but after arthroscopic knee surgery it was recommended I take up riding a bike or risk knee replacement. I wanted the continued benefits of outdoor activities so began cycling. Biking can transplant our former exercise program whether it is running; jogging or walking is easy on the joints and provides a great workout.

There are generally four main categories of bicycles and I provide a brief overview. If you would like the exact benefits of each machine and their nuances I suggest you drop by any of the specialty bike shops in your area.

The first bicycle is called the racing bike, usually very light, has multiple gear sets, very thin tires and glides very easily. In most cases this bike is for an individual who is serious about riding and the training that goes with it. There are usually bike clubs that a person can join to supply camaraderie or you can ride by yourself. It is recommended that you purchase special shoes for this bike to get the maximum benefit but you need not if purchasing for light workouts. The price point can be anywhere from $1,000 to many thousands depending on your ability and level of bike. It is a product that can be used by the beginner or someone endeavoring to maintain a high level of fitness. The only drawback for the casual rider is that the tires can puncture easily and you need to carry a repair kit and know how to use it.

The second bicycle many people purchase today is the mountain bike. It is usually a little bigger than racing bikes and the tires are much wider and studded to allow off road riding and are equipped with multiple gear sets and hand brakes. This unit can be ridden both in the city and the country is designed for someone who wants a workout in hard bumpy terrain. There are clubs you can join and specialized areas like ski hills and country properties that offer managed trails for use in the spring, summer and fall. The price point is from $500 -2,000 dollars for the better ones. Once again the type of work out or level of fitness you want up to you. People of all ages use them for recreation and fitness

The third bike is usually referred to as the hybrid can be ridden on the street and parks and is becoming one of the most popular bikes for fitness and pleasure especially in the city. The bikes come in all models depending on the usage. There are ones designed for cruising to ones that can provide for faster rides and better levels of fitness. In most cases the tires are between those of a racer and mountain bike although ones used for speed and more intense workouts are thinner. The bike comes with multiple gearing and hand brakes with a price point of between $375 to $1500 dollars.

The last of the bicycles is the original model and comes with hand gears and brakes or the standard pedal brake and no gears. They are primarily used for pleasure but do allow for fitness on longer rides. The tires are larger than that of the hybrid and provide a smooth ride from one point to the other at a comfortable pace. The price point is from $125 to $500.

Bicycling has become more and more popular and can provide great fitness for the young, middle age, older and weekend warrior types. It is a good practice to buy and wear a helmet as you never know when you can tumble or a car inadvertently causes you to crash.

Exercise Bike Buying Guide

Buying an exercise bike? An exercise bike is an excellent way to build fitness, lose weight and get fit. Plus they're convenient and one of the most comfortable to burn calories in the comfort of your own home.

But how do you choose the best one? This buying guide will show you what to look for when shopping so you can find the best exercise bike for your needs - while avoiding the lemons!

First, ask yourself which class of exercise bike you would like. There are 2 general classes of exercise bikes:

1) Recumbent Bikes

Recumbent bikes are the newer exercise bikes on the market with the chair-like or bucket seats. Your body is placed in a semi reclining position and your legs angle out in front of you to reach the pedals instead of hanging down as on an upright bike.

2) Upright Bikes

These are also called "Stationary bikes" although this term is now becoming a catch all term for both upright and recumbent bikes. These are the traditional exercise bikes that have been around for years and are similar in form to traditional outdoor bikes.

An offshoot of the standard upright bike is the 'Dual Action' Stationary bike. These bikes have movable bars or levers on arm handles to incorporate your upper body into the workout.

Know what you want before you start comparing different exercise bikes. Personally I've owned both and after a while upright exercise bike seats just don't feel too comfortable if you know what I mean. But the choice is yours.

The next thing you need to decide on is your budget. How much are you willing to pay for your exercise bike?

There are really 3 price categories:

1) Under $500

2) Between $500 - 1000

3) $1000 +

Under $500: While there are some above average exercise bikes under $500, don't expect to get a top quality machine for this price. If you don't plan on using your exercise cycle much or if you're on a budget, this may be a good price point for you.

Between $500 - $1000: Unlike treadmills or elliptical trainers, you can usually get a very solid, higher quality exercise bike for your home in this category.

Most exercise bikes in this category offer magnetic resistance and high grade consoles that give you feedback on your workout. You should also expect several built-in workout programs, foot straps and heart rate monitors.

$1000 +: These exercise bikes are either the cream of the crop for the advanced home exerciser or they are commercial grade for the health club. Examples of bikes in this category include spinners and commercial bikes like Life Cycle, Kettler and Star Trac.

Always remember that with exercise bikes - in general - you do get what you pay for so try to spend the most that you can and get a high quality machine that will last you.

These are really the 2 most important features to decide on: the type of bike and the price you can afford. Here are a few more features you should know about when choosing an exercise bike.

Resistance

There are several different types of resistance you'll find in your exercise bike

1) Direct Tension - offers you a manual adjustment of resistance

2) Air - resistance is provided by pedaling against the airflow of a fan blade

3) Magnetic Resistance - this is the most sophisticated type of resistance allowing magnetic currents to create and track the resistance. It generally allows for a greater variety of workout levels.

Magnetic resistance is generally viewed as the best option since it tends to be quieter and provides a more even feel when pedalling.

Workout Options

Most exercise bikes give you information on speed, distance traveled, and time of the workout. The more sophisticated you go, you'll also find things like total calories and fat burned, resistance level, heart rate and program mode.

You can also get exercise bikes with numerous preprogrammed workouts and information storage as well as iFit compatibility and Interactive Disc players.

It really depends on your personal preferences whether you choose a bike with 10 preset programs and an ultra high tech computer display or one with just a simple display.

However, keep in mind that in general, the higher priced bikes have more sophisticated options and are built with higher quality materials.

Warranty

Exercise Bikes come with a variety of warranties from 90 days to lifetime warranties on different parts of the bike. For example, parts and labor may be covered for 6 months, electronics for 1 year and the frame for a lifetime. In general a longer warranty is indicative of a higher quality machine.

Final Note: It is also important that you decide how much you are planning to use your exercise bike. For example, if you are new to exercising and not sure you'll use your exercise bike much, you might want to save some money and go with a more economical model.

If however you plan on using the bike a lot and/or are a regular exerciser, invest a bit more and get a machine that will last. Look for a high quality brand that is highly rated and gives you good value for your money.

By keeping these tips in mind when buying your exercise bike, you're much more likely to find one that best fits your workout needs.

Do you prefer using a rear mounted basket or panniers with your hybrid/mountain bike?

I'm trying to decide which is more convenient and functional -- using a removable rear-mounted basket or using a rear pannier. I've never used either, and I'm going to use it for grocery shopping. If I get a basket that snaps in place on the rear rack, I assume I'll need bungee cords so that nothing bounces out. I don't like the way permanent side baskets look on the bike.

I've read that with the panniers, or grocery bag, sometimes feet hit them while pedaling.

My local bike shop sells rear racks and a grocery pannier and baskets, but they are so expensive. The rear racks are $45.99 and $54.99
The grocery pannier thing is $69.99 for one bag
The snap-on removable basket is $69.99

I'm afraid to order online because I don't know the quality, and I don't want to order something that might not fit right. Plus I don't know how to install this stuff on my own.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Macpark

I have a lot of experience with this in the family. We have 2 hybrids now for my daughters. They prefer the rear rack with a permanent basket attached. There is no muss or fuss. Walk up and drop your stuff in and ride off. It is big enough for a large bag of groceries, or school books, or all the beach stuff. They have a multiple bungee for carrying odder stuff like large soccer bags etc.

With panniers you have to balance the load on each side. So every time you go you have to divide up the load. The basket holds more that the panniers. Lastly, my girls feel the basket is much safer than the panniers.

We chose to have a standard rear flat rack with a stainless steel wire basket. We permanently attached the basket using 3 'u' bolts with wing nuts, that way it could be removed quickly if desired.

My girls are in college and have biked their entire lives. They would not change the setup we have for any other.... especially panniers, for everyday usage and convenience.
