If you are interested in racing bikes, you will need to learn some things about the bikes before making a decision as to which one to purchase and race. There are a few different kinds of racing bikes to choose from. They are standard, time trial and track racing bikes.
The standard bike is the most common. This type is perfect for road riding. The rider will be positioned hunched over the bike, however it is high enough that they can still see where they are going. These bikes are extremely fast. The next type of racing bike is the time trial bike. These bikes are designed to go incredibly fast while making turns on an a circuit or oval on a closed road course. Much like the standard bike, the rider is hunched over the bike, however, they have the option of adding extensions on the handlebars for comfort and to get a better grip.
They can also attach smaller front wheels to change the riding position to a lower position than usual. The last type of racing bike is the track racing bike, this is used indoors on oval circuits. These have a single fixed gear with no brakes. The only way for a rider to stop is to slow down his pedaling. There is no way to stop the bike immediately. This type of racing bike is stripped down to the minimum required framework so that it is as light and fast as possible.
All of these racing bikes are made as light as possible. The lighter the bike, the faster it will be able to go. These bikes are also equipped with slick tires which offer very little drag on the road surface, also assisting in maximum speed. The aerodynamic design of the bike and the riders position lends itself to the least amount of wind drag possible. All of these design points do have their drawbacks. Because the bike is stripped down to only necessities, it can be extremely uncomfortable to ride. In addition, because of the position the rider is forced into, they may experience back, neck and wrist pain. Since the tires are so slick and thin, they do not protect from vibration and can cause discomfort for the rider.
No matter what type of racing bike you are looking for, make sure that you do some research before purchasing. Talk to other racers that you may know and see what types and brands they recommend. Once you have narrowed it down, head to a store and try them out. If you know exactly what you want, you may be able to find it cheaper on the internet. However, be sure that you have tested out that specific type of bike before purchasing.

Maintaining Your Bike With Confidence
All metallic objects, including bikes, can rust. If you leave a bicycle outside in the elements, other moisture speeds up the rust process. That kind of corrosion can destroy your bike frame, cease up your steering, or stop your gear and chain. It's just like mom and dad said, put your bike away when you're done using it.
What you should do is keep it protected from the elements, in a place like the garage, carport, or shed. You can also put it in your home, just keep it out of the weather. If you are forced to still have your bike outside, it's crucial you at least cover it with some kind of water resistant tarp. Tying it down isn't too difficult, you just put the tarp on top of the bike and use bungees, rope, or some stones to keep the tarp in place.
Make sure you do a good job so the wind doesn't remove the tarp. Maintaining bicycle tires is one of the easiest things you can do for your bike. Not to mention how critical tires are to a bike. Tires should be inspected and filled before and after every ride! Make sure you also note the suggestions on the side of the rubber and to take them into consideration. Careful inspection of the tire is necessary to avoid problems down the line. The tire shouldn't have any scrapes, cuts, bumps or tears. Those kind of tire issues tend to equal a flat tire.
Another thing to note on the tires is the treading, it shouldn't be too worn. If you notice the wheel has a leak or has weak spots, you should probably replace your tires. Tune your brakes if you want your bike performing at it's best. Screws and nuts should be fastened down, and cables should be properly connected. Make sure you take the time to align and adjust your brakes regularly. Otherwise, they'll interfere with the rotation of the tire. And make sure to replace your brake pads if they are showing signs of wear and tear.
The difference between walking and riding is that chain on your bike, so keep it in working order. Keep dirt and debris out of the gear and make sure you've lubricated them. The easiest way to lubricate your gear is to simply flip the bike over and apply the lubricant. Look carefully and check if there's anything looking out of place. If the chain isn't tight enough, fix it. A loose chain actually tends to fall off the bike altogether right in the middle of pedaling. That can be annoying, but also extremely dangerous depending on where it occurs. The chain shouldn't be too tight, but it definitely shouldn't come off easily.
So what's the minimum you need to fix a bike on the road? Typically a tire pump, a tube spare, and a repair kit. Make sure that kit has a general tool sit that includes all the basics like screwdrivers, a spoke wrench, wrenches, and a chain master link. A bike is like any other machine and need to be regularly maintained to function properly at all times.
A bike that hasn't been cared for can literally leave you stranded, but a bike that actually has been cared for, you may use for years.

Will this fixed gear bike get the job done?
Ive been thinking about buying the 2010 Vilano SS/Fixed Gear Bike. Its a great price at $240, but such a low price scares me. Will it just immediately break or give me trouble? So im asking anyone with experience on this bike or with fixed gear, will this bike do the job? I just simply want to ride around town with friends.
Yes, by the review I've read it looks like a good bike to ride around, also may be good for a few races but nothing like serious competitions.
FOR $240, the price is excellent, but the bike itself looks decent.
