Knives are one of the oldest tools ever to have been used. In fact, we weren't even technically human at the time. It was Homo habilis that first began making knives from bone, wood and probably other perishable materials that have not survived. The oldest knives that are still around were created from flint. These were sharpened by being repeatedly thrust against a rock or similarly hard surface. Eventually stone, bone and wooden knives were replaced by harder materials such as copper, then bronze, iron, and eventually steel. Modern knives may even utilize more complex materials such as titanium, ceramic, and carbon fiber (although steel is still widely used.)
The shape of a knife has not changed much over time despite the other technological advances. It is still used to cut or pierce and requires a handle to do this. The variations are the length of the blade, whether it is single or double edged, serrated or smooth, and folding or fixed. Handles are fairly similar as well, one variation being the addition of protection for the knuckles or a protrusion on the end used for breaking glass or blunt force.
Switchblades hide the blade inside the handle. These have a spring that is tensioned so that when a button or lever is triggered the blade slides into place very quickly. They are most often used by police and military because of the ability to deploy the blade very quickly while remaining safe when not in use. They are also preferred by criminals for the same reasons.
Another type of knife that hides the blade in the handle is called a butterfly knife. These have two separate handles which secure together. By grabbing one side, the blade can be either concealed or revealed and put into place. These are often spun around in various ways displaying the blade and the knife handling ability of the user. Due to their illegal status within many Western countries (including some U.S. states,) these blades are also preferred by criminals over regular blades.
Pocket knives also employ folding blades that are protected by the handle, however safety is a priority over being able to be quickly opened. These blades often have a lock that keeps the blade securely open when in use, to prevent accidental closure of the blade when in use, which could potentially injure the user. Some can be opened with one hand, while some require two handed opening. Other tools are often incorporated into the handle as well, such as a file, other blades (e.g. serrated blades,) pliers, tweezers, scissors, magnifying glasses and more. These styles are usually marketed as survival knives.
Knives are most commonly used in the preparation of food. They often come in a knife set that contains various blades that are used in different food preparation methods. A sharpening stone may also be included to keep the various blades sharp. A sharp blade is much easier to use, and actually safer than a dull blade. This is because more pressure must be applied to a dull blade. This reduces the ability of the user to control it.
Also, a sharp knife has a cleaner cut that often is not felt until after the cut has already been administered, but can be easily fixed by a doctor. That is preferable to a dull knife which tears tissue instead of slicing it, causing more pain and resulting in scarred cuts that heal slowly.

Asteroid vs airbag on ground?
If other measures fail...
Say for example an 2 km large asteroid is going to hit earth.
Would a giant airbag slow it down or would it still cause much damage since the airbag is directly connected to the ground and the force would be grounded to the earth.
Common materials would fail but perhaps fiber of carbon-nanotube would be flexible and strong enough.
The airbag should inflate fully before asteroid contact with earth.
Or would an giant groundlevel trampoline have more effect.
The amount of energy from a 2km asteroid impact would annihilate anything we put beneath it. An airbag works by absorbing the impact by allowing the gas inside to be ejected out the ports, so even if the airbag material could hold together, the blast of air would be devastating on its own. The problem is that all that energy needs to go somewhere, and I can't think of anything other than the ocean that would absorb it safely.
