How do you measure fork diameter on a road bike?
I want to buy a new fork for my road bike and i want to know how to measure the diameter. If its too big it wont fit, right?
Pull the handlebar stem off the current fork steerer tube by loosening the stem clamp bolts. Then just measure the diameter of the OUTSIDE steerer tube using a dial caliper if you have one (or a good ruler if you don't). I fyou have an older "quill-style" handlebar stem you will have to loosen the single bolt in the top, gently tap (use a block of wood to prevent damage) the bolt down to free up the wedge, then pull out the stem. FYI, most quill-types are 1", but the clamp types can be 1", 1 1/8" and there are even 1 1/4" on some new MTBs.
