Before I feel qualified enough to review a new CD I have to listen to the thing at least 10-15 times all the way through. And that is exactly what I have done before reviewing Jack's new album "Sleep Through The Static".
What separates "Sleep Through the Static" is that on multiple tracks you will notice Jack experimenting with Ebow effects, slides, keyboard's, and other soundscapes. Aside from expanding his tone in the right directions, he manages to keep his distinctive sound and faithfully satisfy his huge fan base. Additionally, on numerous occasions it is clear that Jack is trying new guitar chords while still primarily staying with major and minor chord bases.
I must say, I think Jack has crafted a pretty solid record for a number of reasons. In general, when compared to his past records (In Between Dreams, Brushfire Fairytales), the new album continues his tradition of mellow and well-crafted songs based on simplistic guitar parts and minimal backing with other instruments.
All in all, the album is a pretty chill record to listen to. What I really like about Jack Johnson is that his music is extremely catchy and he never forgets that there is beauty in simplistic arrangements coupled with clever vocal lines (see Beatles). While some critics may say that his style is not evolving, I say who cares. He writes great music that touches people and has carved a solid niche in the industry. You can't mess with the formula too much, right?

A bicycle has two sets of gears, one at pedals and one at rear wheel. a 10 geat bike has two gears on the chain wheel and five gears on rear wheel. the speed is dependent on three factors
- first is the speed at which the cyclist pedals to turn the front gear(rotations per minute)
- the second is the gear ration from the frong gear to the rear wheel(rtio beteen the number of teeth on the front gear compared to the number of teeth on the rear gear)
-third is the size of the rear wheel(measured as diameter of the heel)
a) develop a formula that predicts the velocity in km/h for a bicyclist.
b) how fast will the cyclist travel who is pedalling at 50 rpm with a 42 toother gear on the front, a 14-toothed gear on the back and a tire with a diamater of 26 inches.
c) in what ways can the cyclist pedal more slowly but maintain same speed.
w = rotation rate of front gear = 50 rpm
n = number of teeth on the front gear
numbers of teeth corresponding to the rotation = w*n
W = rotation rate of rear gear
N = number of teeth on the rear gear
number of teeth corresponding to the rotation = W*N
Equate these:
w*n = W*N
W = w*n/N
W = w*(n/N)
So the rotation rate of the rear gear is the ratio of the number of teeth of the front gear to the rear times the rotation rate of the front gear.
The speed of the bike is then the angular velocity of the rear wheel times the radius of the rear wheel.
D = diameter of the wheel (meters)
R = radius of wheel = D/2
u = angular velocity = 2*pi*W
V = u*R = 2*pi*W*(D/2) m/min
V = u*R = pi*W*D m/min
We must adjust this to get the answer in km/hr
1 meter = (1/1000)km and 1 min = (1/60) hour
So multiply by 60/1000 = 6/100 = 3/50
V = (3/50)*pi*W*D km/h with D in meters and W in RPM
And finally substitute for W to get the final equation.
V = (3/50)*pi*[w*(n/N)]*D km/h
For your specific problem.
D = 26 inches = 0.6604 meters
W = (3/50)*pi*50*42/14)*0.6604 = 18.7 km/h
The obvious way I suppose to pedal more slowly but maintain speed is to increase the gear ratio. The larger this number the more efficient is the transfer of the cyclist peddling to the forward motion of the bike. You can also increase the diameter of the rear wheel. But this simplification of the problem ignores the inertia of the rear wheel for one thing. This is of the form m*R^2 so, as a quick guess, I would say you would have to reduce the mass of the wheel if you increase the radius in order to maintain the same moment of inertia. But such considerations are, thankfully, outside the scope of this problem.
