It is the bad practice of writing a Vlookup formula just at the frontend. Remember that a perfect frontend formula is of no use if your backend list is not properly set to be queried.
These two main undetectable threads reside in the index column of the backend list...
- Index column entries with leading and trailing spaces. It occurs especially when an entry has a single space. For example: "Susan " instead of "Susan"
Spaces in numbers may cause them to be converted to texts so this error is more detectable but a singe leading or trailing space in texts may go undetected for a long time.
These errors are difficult to avoid when your data comes from an external source. You should make a quality control for spaces before starting writing the Vlookup formula.
How to do it?
It is very simple, just use the TRIM function. It delete all leading and trailing spaces from cells. When you have control of the data entry, you can use data validation command or use Pick from drop down list feature in Excel. The other problem that causes unwanted #N/A errors and that is difficult to detect is.
- Wrong spelling. This occurs due to a manual typing of data.
Check spelling in the criteria column. For example: if you count "Wilson" in a column that contains "Wilson" and "Wilsom", you will get 1 only. The best way to avoid these errors is by diminishing the manual data entry. Use data validation, or use Pick from drop down list feature in Excel
These headaches are unnecessary, this happen to guys who focus on writing the formula at the frontend but forget that a Vlookup reflects what is at the backend.
My personal recommendation is: invest the time that is necessary to polish your backend list before you start writing the frontend Vlookup formula.
Conclusion.
Dedicating the time necessary to put your backend list ready will save you tons of your valuable hours, but there are other variables you should be aware about, you should also have clear guidelines to apply them. If you learn to control all these variables, you will gain confidence to work with Lists in Excel, even those that have Multiple and Complicated criteria.

Using Excel to keep a running balance.?
Can someone tell me the formula to use to keep track on daily basis the current value of an investment that has a fixed annual interest rate and is compounded annually. I am pretty sure that the today() function is used and of course the date the investment started but I am lost from there! Thanks.
If it compounds yearly, then the value does not change from day to day.
