WITH LUXURY APARTMENTS, several office towers the five-star China World Hotel and an extremely convenient and stylish shopping mall, the China World Trade Center caters to every possible need. The newly built SoHo residential opposite, the office area, Wahda Plaza , the RizCarlton Hotle east of China World is another example of the fast growing relevance of this downtown CBD area.
At the heart of China World Trade Center is the huge shopping mall. International brands such as Fendi and Kenzo feature strongly although there is also space for some less exclusive local brands. There is a small department store where prices are a little lower, a branch of the CRC Supermarket, a food court and even a decent sized ice rink. Dining options within the mall include Lotus Thai, a good restaurant that suffers a little from its shopping mall atmosphere and a branch of the stylish Sichuanese eatery Southern Beauty. Cantonese fast food at its best is available at the always-busy branch of GL Café.
Upstairs from the shopping mall is the China World Hotel. Don't miss the chance to dine at Aria, quite simply one of the most elegant restaurants in Beijing . The food is impeccable and their set lunch meals are very good value. Couples looking for a romantic evening should ask for the balcony table, an intimate nook for two that overlooks the hotel lobby and offers complete seclusion from other idners.
Coming out of the shopping mall on the western side you will see a branch of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. The Right next door there is a small deli that sells fresh bread and tempting pastries. Their ready-made sandwiches are a good option for lunch on the go. Round the corner from here is a Haagen-Daz ice-cream parlour, a KFC and the Taj Pavilion, a very good Indian restaurant.
Continue walking north from Trader's and you'll find the e-Tower, home to Concept Café for 'California Cuisine', the De-Con Café serving Hong Kong, Singaporean, Vietnamese and Thai food; and Mian Ai Mian, a popular Japanese noodle eatery. The e-tower also houses a branch of the Bridge School , a popular choice for these needing survival Chinese classes.
Moving from China World, which I just one block north to the Kerry Centre. The Kerry Centre has its own shopping mall, albeit smaller and a little less exclusive than China World. The Vista Clinic is an international standard clinic conveniently located inside the mall. The Kerry Centre Hotel, which is accessible either from the street or via the shopping mall, has a few dining options, including the Horizon Chinese restaurant that does some very good lunch time dim sum, and the new and visually stunning lounge bar-Centro.
From the Kerry Center , it is worth taking a shirt walk to discover one of Beijing 's most consistently good local restaurants. Walk roughly 50 meters east of the Kerry Center, cross to the opposite side of the road and in one of the alleys that run south you will see the sign for the Xiao Wang's Home Restaurant. Their food is billed as home style Beijing but the menu is wide and accommodating. Check out their all-male team of writing staff-perhaps the only one of its kind in Beijing !
Across the third ring road from the Kerry Centre is a grey monolithic block tower, marking the entrance, ironically enough, to the Arts and Design center of Tsinghua University . CCTV's new Building is under construction just to the north.
Jianwai Soho can be recoganized easily. A forest of dazzling white towers has been built, with more still to come around a breezy plaza. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes, furniture shops, as well as a branch of American fitness club Bally's and a branch of the ex-pat standby for groceries, Jenny Lou's.
Heading east there is the China Merchants' Center Facing onto Jianguomenwai are the head offices of Motorolla and Hewlett Packard. Whilst behind them is the swish Ascott apartment complex. La Seine in the Ascott is a good French restaurant.
It is a good choice to visit the Days Hotel & Suites Beijing and Panjiayuan Market during the weekend, to the south of The China World Hotel, a 10 minute drive. You will find another Chinese Shadow Puppet this big anywhere in China , nor in the world, apart from the one in the lobby. Taking a short rest in their A+A Club is a very good choice after shopping in Pnajiayuan Market. However, many local expat prefer a dinner in their Reagl Palace Theatre Restaurant where spectacular "The Yellow Earth Cyclone......Experience China 's Cultural Soul" stage performance is presented nightly during dinner time.
Making a short 1km journey east is SOHO.A small community of shops and restaurants has grown in this popular office and residential area. As well as a number of highly rated Hong Kong fast food joints, there is a branch of the old Chaoyang Park favorite, Annie's Café and a very cool Yunnan restaurant, South Silk Road. Also located at SOHO is a branch of the famous Wenruxinju Teahouse, and elegant and atmospheric place with an interesting food menu to compliment the tea list, Just south of SOHO, ou will find the Noodle Loft, and unusual restaurant that serves down to earth Shaanxi dishes, in particular pulled noodles, in a hip atmosphere.

Driving in France
Driving in France is generally a pleasant experience for us coming either from the poorly-maintained, go-kart course which purports to be Italy's motorway network or, alternatively, from Britain's bumper-to-bumper, overcrowded motorways. The substantially empty autoroute stretches before you and, apart from at certain times, there is very little other traffic. A word of warning, though - France is deceptively big and if, like us, you have to travel across it then be prepared for some extended driving stints.
The distances are big and, seeing them in kilometres (if you are coming from the UK) inflates them further. One sign, in particular, makes it for me. Just south of Calais on the 'Route des Anglais', you will see a distance marker which proudly proclaims - Lyons, 650km. For us, returning to Italy, the journey to Lyons is about two-thirds of our overall journey in France.
The bad news about the autoroute is the toll. These charges can soon mount up. With the French attitude towards the English set at 'Situation Normal', the tight toll booths only accept payment from left-hand-drive cars. If you are in a right-hand-drive car and don't have a passenger, prepare yourself for entertainment - we suggest you take a butterfly net for this purpose.
A good feature of the autoroute network in France is the 'Aire'. This is an official pull-in but, unlike the busy UK service stations or the sunbaked, heavily-littered asphalt that the Italians offer, it consists of two types of rest area. You have a choice between a large aire with food, petrol and play area for the children or a smaller rural aire with basic toilet and picnic facilities. This latter group can be very picturesque and even include woodland walks etc.
Each aire is subject to regular night visits from the police and therefore it is reasonably safe to pull over and sleep in even the most rural location. This may well be necessary because the idea of the motel has not really caught on in France and, while there are a few in the south, there are only a handful of motels in the north.
As a disabled driver, the thing which I applaud the French most for is their attitude towards 'reserved' parking. If you are not disabled, pregnant or war-wounded then you just do not park in a reserved space. It is simply, 'not done'. I remember going to the very busy Bourges-en-Bresse service area at mid-day in the summer holidays. The car park was crowded and people were going round and round looking to predate any space which dared to show itself. Despite that and the frayed tempers as people argued over who was first, the two unfilled disabled spaces remained empty until (as a badge-holder) I occupied one.
Although the autoroute is generally quiet, there are two problem areas to avoid. The first is around Lyons at the beginning or the end of the working day. Like the M25 around London, there are just too many vehicles for the road system to cope with. We were caught there once and decided to pull into an aire and sleep for an hour. Sure enough, an hour later (10 am) the traffic had cleared and off we went. The other thing to avoid is Bastille Day (14th July) when every man and his dog take to the road network. Don't think of driving on Bastille Day.
I hope, like us, that you enjoy driving in France.

how many road signs do we need?
these signs are costing us money . at one small junction today. i counted five posts with traffic lights one of them to tell me in my one lane to stop. there were others for other lanes. it was a jungle of posts signs and lights. why ? one light is adequate in france. road markings have 3 million pounds worth of paint to tell us not to turn left, or stop, or park. we already know we cant do these things from the 2 million pounds worth of road signs,
Apparently, we can never have enough paint, lights and signs on our roadways. I've never understood why I need a sign to warn me about a sign coming up or signs that serve no actual purpose at all. Especially when they're in areas that lack important signs, like street signs. Around here most people don't pay attention to the signs anyway. So I don't know how using 3 no turn signs is going to make an impression that no turn is allowed when the 1 sign and the concrete bumper haven't done the job already.
Russia, Iran sign road-map agreement on oil and gas
by Vladimir Socor On July 14 in Moscow, Russian Energy Minister, Sergei Shmatko, and Iran’s Oil Minister, Masoud Mirkazemi, announced ambitious plans for bilateral cooperation, short-term and long-term. If implemented, these would circumvent two sets of sanctions imposed (outside the UN Security Council) by the United States and other Western countries: sanctions against companies that supply ...
