Imagine this...
You're driving through the mountains on your way to a new forest camping site you've discovered in that great outdoors book you just spent $40 on. The air temperature is low enough for your to have the windows up and the heater pumping, you've got the route planned out in your memory and the car hasn't missed a beat.
Crack, bang, screech!
That was the sound of a random tree falling in front of your car and you attempting to swerve in time to reduce the damage, ending you up down the side of a hill 100 metres below the road side and in thick scrub. You know no one can see you from where you are and you remember seeing the last passing car over two hours ago. You're mobile phone is out of reception and you've sustained a good enough cut on your lower left leg to warrant some first aid attention.
That's what we call a survival situation.
Dictionary.com's definition of Survival states "the act or fact of surviving, esp. under adverse or unusual circumstances". Now, sitting in a car 100 metres below the roadway, out-of-site, with no way of communicating and with an injury, definitely comes under the category of "adverse or unusual circumstances".
So what do you do? What's the first thing that goes through your mind?
Here are a few points for you to consider once you've established you're in a survival situation.
1. Stop, Think and Take Note - If you have watched any survival-based movies you'll always find one person who thinks they won't survive and acts hysterically, crying and running around, being negative and not forming any plan to work their way through the survival situation. You'll notice that generally they're the first to succumb to the situation and get themselves in to sticky situations which ultimately can result in a fatality. By stopping, thinking and taking note (whether it is mentally or writing your situation down) you will find yourself calming down and thinking about the situation logically, not emotionally, allowing for clearer judgment and decision making.
2. Slow down - We all know that by slowing down in our every day lives we reduce our blood pressure and stress levels and reduce the risk of long-term health issues. Although you would not be planning to stay in your situation until retirement age, by slowing down you will assist with the first point of stopping, thinking and taking note of your situation, ultimately assisting in clearer decisions beings made and reducing the risk of further injury & worsening of your situation.
3. Remember your location - It may seem obvious, but for many people who have found themselves in an instant survival situation they often miss the simple step of remembering the features around them. Items such as power lines, roads, rivers, mountain features & any other physical reference around your immediate area can assist immensely with your movements and with communications to search and rescue teams once you get in contact with them. You may also utilise man-made features such as power lines, especially if you are familiar with which way they run (i.e. North-South), as these can help you navigate your way to a township for help.
4. Be Courageous - When something as serious as your life is on the line, it's time to tackle your fears head-on. Find a reason to conquer your fears so that they do not end up crippling you and reducing your risk of survival. It's mind over matter now and time to step up to the plate and save yourself at all costs.
5. Improvise - Isn't this what survival is all about? Improvisation. Don't be afraid to try something, whether it be building a shelter or starting a fire from your car battery (ideal in this situation), give it a go! Using common sense in unison with improvisation will strengthen your chances of staying alive.
6. Values - I've read and heard of so many survival situations, and experienced a couple myself, where people have talked about an inspiration from within their lives that has given them the will to stay alive. For some it may be family to return to, others it could be a simple meal at a favourite restaurant, regardless it is that will, or goal shall we say, that determines the length at which you will take yourself to prolong death and get yourself out of the situation you're in. Find that and the rest becomes easy.
7. Appropriate Actions - There is no use stripping off naked if you're stuck in the snow, likewise wearing a jumper whilst stranded in the desert in the middle of the day would not be the most appropriate action to take when in a survival situation. Think about your situation (as per point one) and do what needs to be done at any given time to produce the best result for you. Wearing layers of clothes in the snow and wearing lighter clothes whilst staying in the shade in the desert would be appropriate actions.
8. Look After Others - Although survival is about looking after yourself, there's probably nothing better than having company to share the load of work and to keep you sane. Yes, this does mean sharing resources such as water and food (this needs to be managed), but it also means that finding water and food, building shelters and a fire become less arduous and it beats talking to yourself when you need cheering up. The old adage of 'many hands make light work' comes in to play and the less energy you use means the less you need to consume.
Above all your attitude will determine your approach to the above points when in a survival situation. If you focus on staying positive and finding the will to get yourself out of the situation you're in, you will find that the physical side to survival becomes a lot easier to deal with and your creativity will flourish.
