Do you want a bike that is faster than a mountain bike on road but tougher than a road bike? You might need a cyclocross bike and not even know it. Cyclocross is an off road sport that runs in the fall. The courses are on grass, mud and dirt roads with sections with barriers that the riders must dismount and run over. The laps tend to be short making for a spectator friendly type of racing. Cyclocross started in Europe as an off season sport for road racers but has grown into it's own specialty. The bikes that have grown out of this sport have to be fast and light but tough with lots of traction due to the conditions. Even if you don't race cyclocross, this type of bike may be the best option for all round riding.
Cyclocross bikes look a lot like a road race bike until you look closely. While they have the drop handlebars of a road bike, they run mountain bike cantilever or disc brakes. This means more stopping power is messy conditions and more clearance so fatter tires fit in the frame. This increased clearance also allows for the running of fenders for wet weather training and commuting. The frame geometry is a little more relaxed than a road bike so they are stable on slippery trails. This carries over to winter riding where that stability and the room to run studded tires make these great four season bikes.
Cyclocross bikes are available made from all of the popular frame materials including steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber. Depending on what you would like to use the bike for you can get very streamlined models specifically for racing or more utilitarian designs that have rack and fender mounts. The cyclocross bike is a jack of all trades. Put a road racing tire on and you can go on club group rides. Put on your racks and wider tires to turn it into a commuting or touring bike. I build a lot of cyclocross bikes for people that never get raced. They use them as an all round machine that is at home on both roads and dirt trails. Faster than a mountain bike but you can take it places a road bike could never go.
Most bike companies offer cyclocross options but for racing I recommend the Kuota Kross, a full carbon speed machine and for all round use you can't beat the Surly Cross Check.

Carbon fiber hood
A lot of thought goes into designing and manufacturing every single part of an automobile vehicle. You would be justified in thinking that an automobile hood is a simple part. After all it is just a cover which houses the engine and adjoining support machinery. What innovations can be made into it? You are in for a surprise. This too has received attention of manufacturers. You now have carbon fiber automobile hoods.
Carbon fiber is a material which is light yet strong. Any development which reduces the overall weight of a vehicle is welcome. Lighter the vehicle, the lesser is the power required to drive it. That leads to lesser consumption of fuel and lesser running expenses. Carbon fiber is also used to manufacture other products such as carbon fiber body kits.
Moreover the location of hood is at such a place that besides reducing the overall weight of the vehicle, it reduces weight on the front wheel. That gives a better balance to the vehicle and driving becomes easier.
When you undertake a journey a hood has to be opened and closed quite a few times. Either cooling liquid or water has to be put in the radiator, or some part of the machinery has to be serviced, that all involves opening and closing the hood. A hood should be able to withstand such handling. Carbon fiber hood is quite sturdy and can bear such handling. It is both durable as well as strong.
Carbon fiber is a material that is amenable to be designed into various shapes. If you so want, you can have it painted. You can thereby give the vehicle the look and style of your choice.
A carbon fiber hood is able to withstand heat, which is an advantage.
There are a number of manufacturers making carbon fiber hoods for all types of vehicles in various shapes and styles. You have to select one which not merely appeals to your taste but which is top grade in quality. You can visit www.ilovebodykits.com for more information on carbon fiber hoods. You will get information about many hoods of latest design.

I am interested in buying my first road bike?
and am willing to spend 3k tops, a full carbon fiber frame or titanium frame is not necessary, I am not into racing, a scandium or any other less exotic material interests me, I would like carbon fork and seatstays, I am in good shape at 49years, weigh about 185, is a metal frame a good thing? not into prestige or the high cost of exotics, rather put the money in components, seems like an 18lb or less frame would be good for my weight.
under $3000.00
mountain climbing is a requirement where I live and downhill stability would be good, have a need for speed on downhills, thanks for the answers everyone.
Check out Bicycling magazine June July Aug issues. They have some good recommendations to start with at all different price ranges. At your price range you can get a really great bike. Even at half the price. I would t g to a bike shop or two or three and test ride some bikes. You may not be able to tell the difference in rides between the different frame materials but will get an idea of how the bikes ride for you. Different frame geometries will affect the ride. What type of riding are you planning to do? Where do you plan to do most of your riding? Hills? Do you want a quick handling more for bike or a stable slower handling road bike? Just some questions to get the correct ride. Mikes Bikes, REI, Cyclesports, The Missing Link, to name a few in the area with good selections and knowledgeable people. Performance have some good deals but you need to know what you want. Also getting fitted properly and have the bike set up properly after purchase.
