Cycling is a fantastic way to get into the great outdoors and get fit at the same time. It lets you explore the countryside quickly, allowing you to take in more in one day and striking a balance between relaxation and excitement. This is because you can cycle at your own pace and over the terrain of your choosing - it's a sport for adrenaline junkies but also makes a great pastime for families, people who aren't very fit and those just wanting a leisurely day out.
There are cycle paths all over the countryside - a lot of footpaths allow cycles too, and if you're daring you can take your bike over rugged hills, through rivers and anywhere similarly inaccessible. You can ride your bike on public roads although with today's heavy traffic it's advisable to stick to cycle lanes where possible.
The benefits of cycling are manifold. People who cycle 20 miles a week are half as likely to get heart disease as those who don't. Cycling burns about 600 calories an hour so it's a great workout, and you can set it to your own pace and fitness level. This may seem counterintuitive, but cyclists on roads actually absorb fewer pollutants than people inside cars! You might also find that your daily commute is shorter too if you get on your bike - if there are cycle lanes on your way to work you won't get stuck in a traffic jam!
You need a few bits of equipment to get cycling apart from your bike. The most important is your helmet - be sure to wear yours all the time, even if you're cycling in the countryside. You can still fall off and hit your head so it's better to be safe than sorry. It's also advisable to have a water bottle on your frame so you can take a drink. On hot days you'll get parched even on short rides and with any exercise it's important to keep hydrated.
Reflective gear is essential if you're riding in the dark, especially on roads, along with a lamp. The lamp should be battery powered and not pedal-powered - imagine it going out when you come to a set of lights! You can never have too much reflective gear - give a car every chance to see you and minimise your risk on the roads.
A good lock is an essential item and if possible leave your bike somewhere you can keep an eye on it. Finally, a puncture-repair kit is advisable if you've got a long commute or you do a lot of off-roading.
The only kit you need to ride your bike is something you're comfortable in. Remember that you get hot during exercise to loose-fitting clothing is best. Also be sure not to wear wide-legged trousers as these tend to get caught in the pedals or gears.
You can get all this extra gear for under £100 from good bike shops, and it's a small outlay to make sure you're safe and comfortable on your bike rides. Regular cycling makes you feel better, healthier and happier so get on your bike!

Buying A Beginner Road Bike
Buying a new road bike can be a challenge for those who are just starting off and don't know exactly what to look for in terms of parts or design. You will need some good tips on how to buy a bike that will last you a number of years without having to constantly repair it. You will need to first focus on the brand you are going to buy. Schwinn bikes are still very good ones to buy if you plan on using them more for recreation than racing. Even a beginner should know these things that can really help you out when you are online or in the store trying to figure out what you want to get. Knowing about all the specific parts like the crank, brakes, handlebar, and even pedals are critical to get a quality bike for you to ride.
There are many different kinds of road bikes you can choose from, and one consideration that you must give is the number of speed and gear settings. This means knowing the difference between a bike that has only one speed and a bike that has three or four. Being able to choose speeds at any given moment when you are riding means that you will be able to control your bike in such a way that you will be able to get to where you want faster or get a better overall workout. The same applies to bikes that have multiple gear settings. If you are riding on uneven or rocky terrain, on a hill or mountain for instance, then you will want to be able to choose from different gears. They give you the ability to keep your bike stable when the ground beneath you is not smooth like a road or sidewalk.
Of course checking out the breaks is another essential aspect of choosing your bike. Even a beginner must be aware of the importance that breaks hold in riding. Having good tight breaks means being able to stop or slow down when you need to. This can be especially critical if you are in a situation where applying your breaks is necessary in order to avoid injury. You never know what kind of situation you will encounter while riding, which is why it's important to have as much control over your bike as possible.
The crank, which is the part on the bike that is responsible for connecting the pedals to the chain, is another important part in your bike. You have the option of getting either a double or a triple, and this can sometimes be a confusing decision to make. Even though most bikes come with only a double, a beginner will want a triple. You must take all of these different factors into consideration when buying your bike.

can i change my road bike from multiple gears to one?
so, i am changing a multiple gear road bike to a fixed gear or single gear road bike. if i ordered a rear wheel online does anyone know if it would fit on my bike, or would it be to skinny because it doesn't have the plates on the wheels? i'm sorry if you don't understand, it's hard to explain.
If your bike has vertical dropouts (like most bikes these days do)it will be problematic to convert it to a fixed gear because there is no way to adjust the tension of the chain. However there is this new type of hub they invented that allows you to use vertical dropouts and the hub allows the adjustment of the chain tension. It's called the eccentric hub, by White Industries. You could have a wheel built up with this hub and your vertical dropout problems are solved simply. It's best to just have someone look at your bike and build you the wheel so you know for sure rather than buying it online. Because even if you get the right size online you still have the vertical drop out issue.
