Does your foot hang off the side when playing Rubber Guard....
Its 6.30am and my training partner Liam and I are at the gym. We're training Judo grips , then some randori before working ground. Whilst drilling Rubber Guard I came to the realisation that the biggest mistake people make with Rubber Guard is trying to yank their leg up high without the opposite foot posted firmly on the hip - why I really don't know as Liam has a pretty mean Rubber Guard!
People tend to rush to grab their shin ASAP. The key is to refer back to Mastering The Rubber Guard available at the link below. When you're struggling to move your hips against someone who knows you are going for rubber guard or your flexibility isn't that great, then this is what you need to do to avoid that useless other leg from hanging across the back (and a lot of guys will stack into you then and make you think Rubber Guard sucks when it doesn't),
In Mastering the Rubber guard, go to page 139 to a position called the Exhumer. Here Eddie basically shows a sturdy, basic grip on the back of his opponents neck. Its almost impossible if applied correctly for your opponent to posture up. Now begin by breaking down your opponent from an orthodox closed guard and keep his head in your chest whilst your grind down on his neck. Eddie goes to a different position from here but stick with me. DON'T LET GO OF HIS NECK. Now, put one foot on his hips and shrimp a little to create a slight angle. Keep your knees in and keep squeezing. Now use the foot on the hip to drive your other leg high and grip the shin. If its doesn't reach, don't worry, return quickly to both feet on the hips. HIS HEAD IS STILL CLAMPED DOWN. Anytime he tries to drive in, use your feet on his hips and keep pressure on. If he stacks, go the sweeps immediately as shown in the book. With one foot on the hip you can easily get the rubber leg high and when you want to complete closed high guard, its easier as you can use your foot on the hip to propel your leg higher.
Any comments, please make'em!

Photo Gallery: Gary Young bike check
About a year ago, Gary Young switched from MacNeil to Sunday Bikes, and in the time since, Gary's had an array of "unique" bike setups, ranging from black frames with red tan-walled tires, to the latest: an all-chrome Sunday Forecaster. And by all chrome, I mean something that wouldn't last a minute...
