Becoming a skateboarder will bring you into a new world. Eventually slang terms and trick names will become second nature to you. But before you run, you have to crawl, and in skateboarding that means learning how to properly assemble a skateboard.
Tools to gather:
o Phillips screw driver
o Drill(optional for mounting trucks)
o 3/8" combination wrench or nut driver
o 9/16" combination wrench or nut driver
o Razor blade
Parts to gather:
o Skateboard deck
o Grip tape
o Pair of trucks
o Hardware(set of 8 nuts & bolts)
o 4 Wheels
o 8 bearings
1. The first thing we are going to do is apply the grip tape to the deck itself. Lay the deck on a flat surface. Peel off the back of the grip tape and apply the sticky side to the top of the board. Now smooth it down with your hand so that it sticks flat to the board. Make sure to poke any air bubbles with your razor blade and flatten it down with your hand.
2. Take your screw driver using the shaft right above the handle, scrape the edge of the deck completely around. You will now have the edge shaped out nicely throughout the deck. Take your razor blade and carefully cut off the excess grip tape around the board. Take your left over grip tape and sand down the edges to make it smooth and clean.
3. We will now be mounting the trucks to our deck. Take your screwdriver and poke through the grip tape in all 8 holes on the deck. Insert your bolts from the grip tape side. On the underside line up the holes on your trucks with the bolts. Once you have the trucks set, apply the nuts to the bolts and fasten by hand. Now that both trucks are loosely mounted you need to tighten them. Using your 9/16" wrench hold the nuts still and tighten the bolts using your screwdriver. (A drill will work much faster for this process but be careful not to strip out your bolts)
4. Wheels won't do much without bearings, so here is how to insert bearings into your wheels. There is a special tool for this you might see at your local skate shop but there is a little trick that works better. Remove the nuts on each truck and Flip your board on its side. Take one bearing and place it on one truck. Now put the wheel on the truck and push hard against it. The bearing will pop right into place. Remove the wheel, put another bearing on the truck, flip the wheel around and repeat the process. Presto! One wheel complete, just repeat this for all 4 wheels.
5. For the next step we are going to mount the wheels. Just slip 2 wheels on each truck and using your 3/8" wrench tighten the nuts. Be sure not to over tighten, you want it loose enough so that the wheel can spin freely.
Now you have your own complete skateboard that you put together all on your own. Give yourself a pat on the back and go skate it up! Be proud of yourself because now you know how to properly assemble a skateboard.
Life is what you make it, stay positive and moving forward.
Peace & Love,
Matt
Beach Volleyball Serve Receive Tips - Are Hand Grips the Secret to Better Passing?
The function of the hand grip you use to forearm pass or bump a ball is to help you keep your elbows straight and to make sure you maintain as flat and as wide a platform as possible. Hand grips come in all forms.
The secret to better passing is to keeping your elbows straight and as locked and close together as possible. Remember you want to create a table top where the only thing the ball has to do is bounce off of your table top and back up to the intended target. The best tip to keeping your elbows straight is to position your wrists with your thumbs always pointing down to the ground in the most efficient way possible.
For some players that looks like placing the fingers of their right hand into the palm of their left so their fingers are turned upward towards them and they are crisscrossed. Now they close their hands together so the thumbs meet, touching side by side. If they are right handed they then should see the first three fingers of their right hand extend past their left thumb.
For others, their hand grip is made by making a fist with their right hand and turning it sideways so they see their thumb on top of their fist. Then they place that fist into the palm of the opposite hand until the two thumbs meet and are lined up side-by-side. The fingers of the left hand should come across the fist and touch the knuckles of the right hand.
Still for others, there are those who modify the fist grip and have their two index fingers pointing to the ground (old school) while a few elite players with out-of-this-world ball control skills, manage to have no grip at all.
Here's the deal, since you will be passing and serve receiving and diving in this wonderful game called beach volleyball you want to have your own personal kung fu grip to be one that doesn't break apart easily under pressure and that absolutely insures that you will be able to create and maintain that all important "table top" which we call a platform.
To maintain the most control of the ball during serve receive the number one important thing is to keep a straight flat platform using a grip that doesn't allow your arms to break apart in mid-action. You want to use both arms to pass, not just one.
Your goal is to be able to put the ball where you want it, whether the ball comes to you as an easy serve or whether you have to dive for a hard hit down ball. Since your platform is where the ball makes contact, it needs to consistently be a flat surface where impact is made above your wrists and below the inside of your elbows on your forearms and with your shoulders angled to your target.

School help please for my 6 yer old son?
Right from the beginning of the story he was told at 9 months he had glue ear and this went on for 5 years until the school said he needed help with his speech. I then asked for a hearing check again and was told glue ear still there. He got grommets put in Aug 09 but had already fell behind at school. Had his parents evening last night and again was told he is not up to year 1 standards has trouble with his writing needs alot of help in his class work and his speech is still not there. He will say oh rain get wet instead of saying its raining outside and we will get wet.
It really worries me he will find school hard all the time and not be that bright in years to come. Has anyone else had this and with what outcome. Also can you think of any help I could be given him in the house. I have ordered him some pencil grips to learn him how to hold a pencil better for better writing
otitis media, recurrent ear infections, are a concern for developing children because it occurs during a period where a child is developing their phonological awareness. phonological awareness is a childs knowledge of the sound structure of language which becomes the basis by which they process language. children with otitis media can have difficulty with speech and language concerns because of this.
consult your district for help. you can obtain speech and language evaluation services to get more information and an occupational therapy consult to determine whether the writing is a function of finemotor difficulty or with language in general.
talk to your school and be collaborative, and if you feel it necessary, talk about referral for evaluation.
