Learning to Riding a Motorcycle is a unique experience that implements examples of the law of physics. As you consider this comment, we will take a brief look into these effects.
First, start with the effect of a motorcycle moving forward. The bikes movement creates a gyro effect as the motorcycle attempts to maintain a forward direction of travel. As speed increases the force of this effect increases to keep an upright, straight line.
To change direction of the gyro effect we use the next example of physics, Counter Steering. Both of these effects provide the rider a key to enjoying control of their motorcycle.
As mentioned as speed increases on a motorcycle the harder it is to change the direction of travel. Leaning over to the side may have a slight effect, turning the handlebars to turn the bike in the desired direction of travel will be difficult and will bring a surprising result.
The high-speed of a motorcycle creates the effect of a gyro holding an upright, stable path for the bike. Turning the bike is not through weight shift or brute strength. Turning eases with another riding technique known as Counter Steering. The use of counter steering allows the rider to change direction quickly and with control.
Briefly, counter steering uses the effect of applying a force resulting in an opposite reaction. You just push the handlebars in the opposite direction of your intended path. If you want to go left, you push forward slightly against the left handlebar grip resulting in the handlebar actually turning to the right.
As the handlebar turns to the right, the bike leans to the left, the intended path or travel. The harder you push on the left grip the more the lean, the quicker and the tighter the turn. To change direction to the right just do the opposite, push against the right handlebar grip.
To a new rider this will sound strange and on the surface does not make sense. On a bicycle, they turned the handlebar in the direction they wanted to go. It always worked. On a bike capable of speeds in excess of 12-15 MPH, the effect of using direction turning to the intended path fails. At that point, if you turn the handlebars in the direction you want to go, the bike would go in the opposite direction.
Understanding these two directional control effects will make riding easier, safer and just more fun. A smooth curve taken at the right speed, under control of counter steering provides the sense of gliding through the curve. In addition, you have excellent control to avoid an emergency by small changes in your counter steering inputs. The world of riding becomes a lot more enjoyable as you Learn to Ride a Motorcycle.

i am looking for a price for a 3spd Triumph bicycle. The S/N number is 36800.?
The bike is from the 1950's or 60's. It is a black frame bike w/ silver handlebars/brown grips. The seat is black and the front fender is black. The back fender is black &white. It has a silver and black kickstand. Does anyone know how much it is worth or where I can find the info. It is a friends bike and he wants to know how much it is worth.
The S/N number is 368001.
As mentioned before, Triumph was built by Raleigh. It was one of their many brands.
It is still very easy to find Triumphs in excellent condition at flea markets and yard sales and as such, unless the bike is in extremely fine condition and you can find a collector that needs one, they aren't worth any more than what you can get.
I buy such bikes when I can find them and a typical price is in the $20 to $40 range although I have gotten them in great shape for as little as $5 at public auctions. Now, if your bike was green, blue, or red it would be worth as much as $300 or so if in excellent shape. By the way, do NOT try to paint it to increase it's value.. we collectors know when that is done and renders the bike virtually worthless.
