Handlebar Tape Bicycle

Most of the Midwestern limestone-gravel rail-to-trails are fairly flat. Just about any bike will work on them satisfactorily with minor adjustments for long or short rides, depending on the season or weather they are carried out in. Still, the frequent or long-distance trail rider needs a bike that is equipped both for the expected and unexpected situations.

The "steamrolled" rail-to-trail surface stays fairly hard, even during light rains. However, this hard-gravel surface gets soft during heavy rains or extended wet weather. Also, because these trails follow the old undisturbed railroad corridors, many kinds of trees, shrubs, plants, and thorny bushes grow next to them. The larger trees often form canopies over these trails. Thus, the seasonal or windy conditions yield plant debris that litters these trails sporadically. The debris, which includes, nuts, fruit, fallen broken branches, and small sharp twigs, can cause flat tires. To start with then, a trail rider must be able to fix flat tires although not often, and sometimes, never.

The following information and items make the rail-to-trail bicycle dependable and useful.

Bike type. The hybrid or mountain types equipped with touring tires are the most popular for these trails. Yet, the narrow-tire road bike, which can ride smoother, faster, and more comfortably for some riders, works well on them during dry weather. But, to keep this bike from sinking into the softened trail during wet weather, wider tires (25-to-32-mm wide) having thorn liners can be installed ahead of time. These tires will not wear a rider down as fast as the narrow ones during wet conditions.

Rack, bag, and trunk. Long-trail riders must also carry moderate amounts of extra equipment, food, and water. A hanging frame bag works well for carrying spare tire tubes and boots, tire levers, a hand air-pump, and the minimum tools needed for tightening anything on the bike that can loosen. A rear rack with a small trunk works well for carrying anything else, e.g., cleaning gear, lubrication, rain and sun gear, blanket, small tarp, energy food and juice, extra water, and personal items.

Fenders and mud-flaps. Hard-surface gravel trails are dusty during hot or dry weather. The dust raised by the front bike tire can clog the bike's chain and gears. Also, during wet weather, both of the bike's tires will spray limestone mud all over the bike, rider, and any attached equipment. This kind of mud builds up thick and heavy, and gets into everything, including the bicycle gears. Quick-connect fenders plus home-made mud flaps reduce these adverse effects considerably. The mud flaps can be cut from stiff rubber strips or from large plastic bottles.

Other accessories. Small items that improve the usefulness of a trail bike are:

  1. compass for knowing the directions if a detour in required
  2. bicycle computer for knowing distances and mileage
  3. headlight and rear-light for early morning or late evening riding
  4. side reflectors or reflecting tape for crossing roadways and driveways
  5. handlebar-attached rear-view mirror for all-around visibility
  6. extra handlebar grips for changing hand positions (prevents carpel tunnel syndrome)
  7. horn or beeper for passing other riders, hikers, walkers, dog walkers etc
  8. attached easy-to-grab dry food for loose dogs or other stray animals
  9. attached easy-to-grab protective device (e.g., small pepper-spray canister) for just-in-case.

The latter two above are not needed on the maintained well-used rail-to-trail. But having them aboard does not hurt anything. In any case, the bike model described above works well both for long or short rail-to-trail bicycling. Also, this kind of well-equipped trail bike is much more than a vehicle to ride trails on. It is a supply carrier, guide, information gatherer, provider, shield, protector, life-line, haven, and dependable partner as well. :)

28 Tips For Cycling Safety

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 784 bicyclists were killed in 2005 while riding their bikes. In 2004, there were 725 deaths, and for the four years previous, annual bicycling deaths ranted from 629 to 732 people each year.

Statistics for bicycling injuries are not readily available, since most do not get reported.

Use the Proper Equipment

1. Be sure your bike fits you properly and is adjusted for your size.

2. Equip your bike with safety equipment: a white headlight (preferably one you can set to a flashing mode for use during the daytime to make yourself more visible), reflectors and/or reflective tape or markings, a flashing red rear light (essential for riding at night), a horn or a bell (to give audible signals to let drivers know where you are—or that you’re there at all), and mirrors on your handlebars.

3. Each time, before you ride, check to see that tires are properly inflated, that the brakes work, and that nothing is loose on your bike.

Dress For Cycling

4. Always wear a properly fitted bike helmet to protect you in case of a fall or crash. (Consider putting a mirror on your helmet, too.)

5. Wear bright, neon colors and/or reflective clothing—even during the day.

6. At night, wear a reflective jacket or vest or a safety triangle.

Plan Ahead

7. Know the rules of the road and any specific bicycling rules for your area

8. Plan to travel in slow or residential areas when possible to avoid fast-moving downtown traffic.

9. Avoid narrow roads and opt for wide roads where there is more room for bicycles and cars to maneuver if you can.

10. Always stay alert. Don’t ride with headphones or an ipod. And NEVER use your cell phone while biking!

11. Never be in a hurry. When you’re in a hurry, you can get careless or take unnecessary chances. It also makes it more likely that you could be darting in and out quickly and automobile drivers might not even see you.

When Bicycling

12. Use your headlight—even during the day—so drivers have a better chance of seeing you.

13. Use your mirrors so you know what is going on around you at all times.

14. Ride on the street with other traffic, not on the sidewalk, traveling in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic, not against it.

15. Know—and use—hand signals. Be sure to give plenty of notice in advance of when you are going to make a turn. Then be sure to look over your shoulder to be sure your path is clear before making the actual turn.

16. Be consistent and predictable so motorists know what you are going to do. Drive in a straight line. Don’t swerve, weave in and out of traffic or parked cars, or make any erratic or sudden moves.

17. Obey traffic signs, signals, and road markings and yield to pedestrians – just like any other vehicle on the roadway.

18. Use your horn or bell if you will be crossing in front of another vehicle so you give an audible signal—it’s more likely to get the other motorists attention.

19. Make eye contact with motorists if possible, so you know that they see you.

Drive Defensively

20. Watch for hazards such as pot holes, puddles, loose gravel, spare car parts, drain grates, rocks, litter or garbage, parked cars opening their doors, pets running loose, and other vehicles.

21. Ride to the left of the parking lane to avoid hitting a car door that opens unexpectedly in front of you.

22. At a red light, stop behind another car. Do not pull up next to the first car at the light where you will be in the blind spot and risk getting hit if the car makes a right turn and the driver doesn’t know you’re there.

23. When you follow a vehicle that is moving slow, be patient. It may be getting ready to make a turn. Don’t try to rush past it or get up beside it in the driver’s blind spot.

24. Always look behind you (over your shoulder) before making a turn—for other vehicles, for other bicycles, and for pedestrians.

25. Always look behind you (over your shoulder) before you change your position in the lane of traffic, as a vehicle could be getting ready to come alongside you or pass you.

26. Never swerve in and out of traffic or in and out of the parking lane. Maintain steady placement in your lane.

27. Double check everything! Even if you have the right of way, a car or other vehicle is much larger than a bicycle and for your own safety, you have to be prepared to yield at all times.

28. Always drive, ride, and act as if other drivers can’t see you! Put your safety first.

how do you put on the tape for the bicycle?

what type of tape do they use on bike handlebars/dropbars?

It specific - make just for wraping handlebars. The most popular are synthetic cork. Real cork is still used by many. Cloth and vinyl tape where used in the past and you can get special tape like leather which is rare.

Putting it on is simple but takes practice. Basic instructions always comes with the tape. But basically, you stuff one end of the tape in the barend, and push a plug in to hold it in place. You wrap up to near the bar center and tape the end to finish it. There's a few little tricks like wrapping under the brake levers and getting it even.

Viva Cino Heroica
The old man’s jaw dropped as his truck entered the pasture, on a dirt road some 20 miles south of Kila, and he took in the scene. More than 60 wool-clad people surrounded two picnic tables covered with baguettes, cured meats, pungent cheeses, wine and cigarettes. Some women wore long skirts. Some men wore primitive-looking leather helmets. They stood talking and laughing, their fingers slick ...
