Walkers and canes are designed to provide the user added stability. Anyone with an unstable gait is a candidate. The risk of falling and breaking something is not worth the gamble. Most of the patients we are providing walkers and canes for have already fallen, more than once in most cases. These types of injuries can be prevented in many cases with the right type of walking device.
A cane is light in weight and reasonably easy to use. Canes come in a variety of styles. Starting with the handle, there is a curved grip as well as a straight handle type, curved being the most common. In addition, consider the thickness of the handle. The smaller hand, of course, would require a thinner grip. There are custom grips available as well. When choosing a cane an important factor to consider is that the cane is set at the correct height. Adjustable height canes use a spring loaded button to accomplish this; however some of the custom canes require they be cut to size.
Walkers can come with baskets, trays, seats, wheels and brakes. The simplest walker is an aluminum light weight folding walker. It folds for storage or travel. If the client is unable to lift the walker as they walk, wheels can be added. Wheels must always be added to the front with some type of glide cap or ski on the rear. Most folding walkers can accommodate a tray and / or a basket. Be careful not to overfill them, it could create an unstable walker.
A very popular walker is the three wheeled walker. They fold in half which makes it easy to travel with. Generally they have a bag which, of course, allows you to carry things. Some of the more expensive models have trays as well. Most three wheeled walkers are light in weight and adjustable in height. This type of walker requires the individual have good upper body control. The three wheeled configuration can create an unsafe environment for some individual. Discuss this with your healthcare professional such as a physical or occupational therapist.
The most common four wheled walker is equipped with a seat. Usually you will find a bag or basket under the seat. Some styles place an extra basket on the front for additional storage space. Although it does make the walker longer, making it more difficult to maneuver. In addition, it will have a brake system. It's important to lock the brakes anytime the client sits or stands. If this isn't done there is a risk of injury.
The two most common types of brake systems are: the bicycle grip and the spring loaded type that locks anytime weight is applied directly in a downward motion. The bicycle grip brake also known as a quad grip, is attached to the handle bars and is applied by either squeezing the handle or pushing down on it. In order to release the brake either release the grip or push up the bottom of the handle.
Another walker style that has recently entered the market is one that has taken some of the features from the different walkers. It's a walker with two front wheels and spring loaded rear gliders. It also has a seat that folds up and out of the way when the patient is walking. This is a big advantage over the typical four or three wheeled walker. This allows the individual to maintain a proper gait. Other benefits include the fact that it is much lighter than a four/three wheel walker and it folds flatter.
Both of these features make it easier for the caregiver or patient to load in the vehicle when traveling. This type of walker has gliders on the rear of the walker to create a drag that may help some user keep better control of their walker. And finally this walker locks it's self when ever the individual sits down. This feature is extremely important for those patients who might have some dementia.
All of the walking devices mentioned require that they be set-up properly for each individual. Most walkers or canes can be set to the correct height by standing your individual up, shoulders back, head up and hands at their sides. The handle(s) need to be adjusted to the same height as the individual wrist. This will give you approximately a 15 degree angle of the elbow. In most cases this will be correct, but as always check with your healthcare professional.

Can tungsten rings be cut off? How do I remove a tungsten band in emergency situations?
Tungsten rings can easily be removed in emergency situations, though the method most effective does not include "cutting" it off. The only tool one will need is a standard pair of vice grip style locking pliers, and we will explain exactly how to remove a tungsten band if it will not slide off in the normal fashion. Do not attempt to use standard ring cutters.
Place the vice grip–style locking pliers over the tungsten ring and adjust the jaws to clamp lightly. Release and adjust tightener one-third turn and then clamp again. Repeat until a crack is heard, and then continue clamping in different positions until the hard material breaks away. Take care not to slide or rotate the cracked ring on the finger. If the tungsten ring contains an inlay of gold, the exposed gold can then be cut or clipped in the usual fashion.
Usually medical situations in which this becomes a necessity include excessive weight gain and hand injuries. When we have seen wedding bands be removed in the past, it is almost always because they have bent out of round or been smashed, making it incredibly uncomfortable and painful for the person wearing the ring. Tungsten carbide wedding bands will never bend. In fact, if you were to drop something very heavy on it or slam it in the trunk of your car, it would break before it would bend, and simply fall off your finger. In this case, you would likely be safer wearing a tungsten ring than that made with precious metals.
Remember, the safest thing to do is just remove your tungsten band when you're lifting weights, rock climbing, or anything of the sort.

without buying special sockets for stripped bolts/nuts?
- what is the best way to get a bleeder valve off that is stripped? i have tried everything from channel locks to regular sockets to vice grips. the valve is almost completely round and i am having trouble getting it off. help!!!!!!!!!!!
it is on a wheel cylinder - (drum brakes)
Those can be a real bugger. Saturate it with penetrating oil, like PB Blaster and let it sit for several hours, then get on it with a good set of vise-grips. Is this on a wheel cylinder (drum brakes) or a caliper (disk brakes)?
Hackers crack high-tech locks
Security maverick Marc Tobias showed hackers on Saturday how simple it is to defeat some of the world's top high-tech locks. "These locks might be winning awards but they are forgetting the basics," Tobias said while giving AFP a first-hand look at how to crack several models.
