Most bicyclists know without a doubt when we are climbing or descending hills, especially the steeper ones. Not only can we tell by sight, but we can feel the differing peddling pressures in our legs. Yet, under certain weather, wind, or physical conditions, the gradual inclines can be more difficult to detect and adjust to on distance rides. Here are two inexpensive ways to estimate or keep track of the lesser inclines on lengthy bike rides.
1. Floating sphere/ball compass (1 to 1-1/16" diameter).
- Purchase a bike-ready floating-in-fluid-ball compass set within an insulated metal ping-ringer. This model has a built-on handlebar mount. Mount it directly to the handlebars if desired, which can take up space from other items, like, a computer or headlight. It can also look amateurish.
- Or, pull the ball portion out from its ping-ringer frame, and then caulk or glue it partway into the hollowed-out end of a handlebar grip if no magnetic interference is present there. This mounting is out of the way and less bulky.
- Wrap black plastic tape around the end of the grip to cover only the glued part of the compass shell. That is, leave the floating apex in the compass visible.
Because the entire ball in this kind of compass floats horizontally within its transparently liquid-sealed outer shell, its apex floats straight up. Sometimes, this apex is noted by a small bubble atop the floating ball. Thus, any shift in the direction of the floating apex from a marked reference point atop the outer shell indicates a shift from being level. If the apex moves forward from that point or mark, the rider is going uphill. If it moves rearward, the rider is moving downhill.
However, these floating-ball compasses only provide course readings of slope inclines, although its gyroscopic-like tilts might be easier to view with the larger spheres. Their main advantage is showing the bicyclist both the directional and larger-incline readings at the same time.
2. Spirit-level core (large floating bubble liquid-sealed within a small tube having midway markings).
For a more sensitive indicator of lesser slope inclines, the spirit-level works best.
- Purchase a mini- or chalk-line type on the Internet or at a local hardware store.
- Trim the outer plastic mounting down to near its tube core for easy mounting.
- Mount it parallel to the top or side of the bicycle's crossbar with an air-drying caulk or glue.
- If necessary, wrap tape all the way around the crossbar and the level's ends for extra holding strength.
Because this device is sensitive to slight changes of position or gradient, its mounting attachment must be rigid. Otherwise, the spirit level itself will change position on it own, which will ruin the readings. Yet, once mounted firmly, it detects the slightest incline or gradient easily. Of course, this spirt level must be mounted while the bicycle is standing in a level position.
Also, while bicycling, the rider will want to stop or coast slowly to take a reading. The force from peddling a moving bicycle will affect the position of the level's bubble. Also, this bubble will breakup when riding on bumpy or rough surfaces.
Summary. These devices help bicyclists monitor every aspect of their rides, including all of the road or trail slopes without having to carry a global positioning system (GPS), which will measure both the direction and slope incline accurately. Certain advanced bicycle computers (cyclometers) will also measure percent incline. Yet, something in between all of these devices in terms of measurement ease and cost will be nice to have.

After watching the video and read the instructions, I had to spend several minutes playing with it to see how to release the tape and increase the support bars.
Now I can put on the vehicle or remove it for 2 minutes.
I like the fact that the remaining rubber feet on the metal tailgate of my forest, not the glass that so many other trunk mounted racks.
It has a sturdy frame bike, but you need a bungee cord or something to keep the bike to balance tires.
I was hesitant to pay so much for wardrobe, but convenience is worth. I can ride a bike on a bike path, then unhook it and only SR bones in the trunk.
Another nice thing is ratcheting / locking, rubber, steel belts are not required to look back and re-tighten every hour on the long haul.

Like most of us, when I found myself considering a trunk mount bike rack, I was worried about possible damage to the paint job on my new Toyota Camry Hybrid. No worries! Right out of the box, the Saris Bones RS 3-Bike rack mounted onto the trunk in minutes, held the bike firmly in place while the car hustled to make my riding start time, held the bike firmly for the next four days as I tested it in all types of driving situations, DID NOT damage the car OR the bike, was a breeze to remove, and compact to store. Thanks Saris, for such a well thought out product! More expensive than some other models, but constructed with an eye for holding its resale value.

Saris Bones RS - Great Design, but has issues
I searched many optional Trunk type universal Racks. This was about $100 more expensive that the rest, but I purchase because the design features seemed really nice.
I liked the ratcheting ties and the four point hold as opposed to the others six point.
The Round boots seemed ok, but appeared too hard and would damage the paint as opposed to the others using a very soft foam.
My big issues were the straps. Too long, difficult to use and always in the way during loading / unloading.
Other issue was my new rack had a defective frame support mount. Thy added a feature where you could move them out of the way during loading/ unloaded and one of the three did not work.
I emailed them on Monday and gave them the whole story, figuring they would send me a small part to fix it. I never heard back from them so I returned the rack.

Great Bones
Saris Bones RS 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack I bought the RS-3 as our new Passat 3.6 4-motion would not allow a hitch mount. I was very concerned about stability of the rack, the attached bikes and the finish/paintwork of the car. In a word (or so) no problems. The 2 mountain bikes we carry are rock steady on the rack, the rack is rock solid on the car and the paint hasn't suffered at all.
I recommend a thorough reading and understanding of the instructions and then a rereading and "dry mounting run". Given you mount the carrier correctly, it's a superior product worth the superior price. Make sure that the rack fasteners and cups are clean as should be the trunk lid of the car. It also works very well on my wife's M3.

It doesn't get any better
Never had to even look at the instructions for this bike rack; I had watched the demo a couple of times, and the rack installed exactly as the video had shown. This is a rock-solid bike rack, and installation/removal couldn't be more of a breeze -- 30 seconds to one minute. For me, this rack is well worth the money. I have carried two bikes on it with no problems at all, but as another person stated in their review, the bikes do need their front wheel/handlebars secured so they don't move around ("yes/no" movement). I think this is a normal situation when a bike is suspended and moving on anything; I just use a small nylon harness to loop through the bike wheel and the bike itself to correct this "problem". The bikes are extremely secure, and for the first time, I don't worry at all about them falling off. Hands down, this is the ultimate in bike transport if you are going to use a trunk mount rack.

This rack works as promised
I purchased this rack based on the reviews and it works as promised. The install went well and the rack fits secure to the back of my car. There is plenty of adjustment.
The guy from NC should use his head before writing a negative review about this rack. The rack comes locked from the factory and if you unlock each side, the straps release and work perfectly.
