If you utilize a bicycle as your main means of transportation, congratulations! You are doing both yourself and the environment a lot of favors. But if you want to keep that good feeling of riding a bike, you must also learn how to take care of it.
There are special ways of maintaining the quality of your street or mountain bike. Here are some of those tips and techniques to apply to your own bike.
Procedure for Street and Mountain Bike Maintenance
-Remove the bell, lights, and all other accessories that you've placed on the handlebar.
-Release the brake cables, beginning with the front brake. Adjust front calipers by pushing them into the wheel's rim. This lessens the cable's tension. Then, taking out the brake cable from the retaining clip, repeat this process with the one on the rear.
-Now, flip the bike over. So as not to damage important parts like the grips, lay it on an old towel or cloth. There are other ways of doing this- you may also hang the bike from a rafter or other high place by its saddle, or stringing it up with rope tied around the handle bars.
-Take out the wheels. Do this by opening the quick release lever, which is found on the front wheel axle. Lift the front wheel out. When you get to the rear wheel, you have to ease out the rear cassette of the mechanism that contains two cogs (derailleur).
-Use a brush with soapy water to clean out the drive system. Beginning with the derailleur at the rear, work your way through all the parts that move. Move the chain around by turning the pedals. Lubricate the chain by washing it with a soapy wet cloth. Wipe it immediately afterwards with a dry cloth. Then wash the cranks and pedals with the wet cloth. Clean the moving parts of the front gear mechanism with it as well.
-Wash under it, beginning with the front forks, wiping them dry right after you do. Do not neglect the rear and center of the frame.
-Then wash the handlebars with the soapy cloth. Do not neglect the gear assembly and the brake lever. Wash the crossbar, without forgetting the brake and gear cables. Also wash under the seat.
-Mount the wheels after washing them. The same wet cloth can be used to clean the rims on the front wheel. Wash down the spokes and make sure the axle is also clean. De-grease the disks on the disk brake system.
-When you drop the front wheel back in the forks, make sure that the quick release is tightened. If it needs adjustment, turning the nut on the axle clockwise will tighten it, while turning it anticlockwise will loosen it.
-Do the same with the rear wheel. Its gear cassette must be thoroughly cleaned. Remove all stones or debris between the teeth, and remove any dirt or oil in the cogs with soapy water. Drop the rear wheel in its frame and tighten the quick release.
-Make sure the wheels are straight. To test this, rotate them. Spokes should be tight.
-Check tire air pressure when the bike is upside down.
-Check the drive system for noise, which signifies wear and tear of bearings. Also make sure there is no wearing on bottom bracket, or snagging on the front gear mechanism.
-Wash the top of the bike while it is placed against a wall. Wash the handlebars,headset, brake and gear levers, forks on the front wheel, seats down tube, and crossbar.
-Remove the saddle and wash it, then remount it, ensure that the quick release is tightened, and wipe.
-Then clean the seat stays and the bottom bracket.
-Test your brakes, following the specific procedure for your particular brake.
-Lubricate the drive system.
-Check the lights.
This procedure can apply to a street bike, mountain bike, or even a boys or girls bicycle. Remember, that the better you care for your bicycle, the more years of great biking experiences it will reward you with.

It is pretty easy to take the cassette off, but the only problem is you need a chain wrench and a special socket that fits into the cassette to loosen it up. The chain wrench goes on the teeth of the cassette so it does not turn while you loosen it with the socket.
Then it just slides off and replace it or slide back on to a new wheel. You do not need the chain wrench when you tighten it.
