What is a good, but cheap beginners mountain bike?
I cannot spend more than 300 dollars. I dont want one of those cheap bikes you get from wal-mart or target. I was looking at the diamondback bikes but i need more ideas. Im going to be riding in dirty trails so it doesnt have to be super advanced or expensive.
Recognize that brand isn't that important ...it's the quality of the components that matter.
Cheap bikes generally have carbon steel frames ... i..e. heavy and relatively fragile and prone to rust. In and of itself that;s not a problem unless you crash it. The extra weight isn't a huge factor in a beginners bike.
If possible look for alloy rims and stainless spokes on the wheels. At that price you may not find them ... but try.
Don't get a rear suspension bike, at that price you won't get anything that will work well or hold up well.
Components will be mediocre at best. The biggest problem is that they don't stand up well, are subject to corrosion and adjustment is more difficult. That said, learn to adjust them yourself ... it's good training.
In reality, I'd suggest looking for a better used bike than a new one in that price range. $300 for a used bike will buy a name brand bike several years old that, at most, requires a few updates (e.g. brake pads, chain). Furthermore, it will probably have a CrMo or aluminum frame, alloy wheels and much better components than a new $300 bike. If you accept a few scratches and a bit of cosmetic rust you may get a very good bike for peanuts at a garage sale. Or try Craigslist, etc.
The only real issue is fit. You need to know what size you need and how to adjust the bike to fit.
I learned years ago that a good bike is not only more pleasant to ride, it can be adjusted and maintained easier and will take punishment a lot better than a cheap bike ... and it's worth putting $50-$150 in upgrades into a $200 bike that originally sold for $600 - $1000. A used bike is a great choice if you don't require the latest shifting, trendy colours and don't mind a few scratches and scrapes.
