Restoring and collecting old bicycles have long been a popular hobby. Some collectors like to collect their dream bike that they previously could never afford or a replica of a famous racers bike. In some cases a collector has been able to restore an actual complete bicycle raced and won by a famous racer to its original condition as it was when raced.
Mountain bikes became very popular during the 80'ies and exploded in popularity during the early to middle 90'ies. The current mountain bike is currently constantly evolving with new technological breakthrough every year it seems. But there is just something classic, timeless and beautiful about a rigid late 80'ies or early 90'ies MTB.
Most collectors of vintage mountain bikes seeks out the bikes they could never afford when they where young, starting out with a bare frame and adding bits after bits from their own fantasy dream specification. But there are also collectors who focus on a single company only collecting their brand of frames or complete bikes. As with most collectors, there are those who are fine with a single retro mountain bike, at the other end there are those who are not satisfied with twenty vintage mountain bikes restored to perfection.
Just as with classic road bikes and early century bicycles a proper restoration of a classic well known brand of a mountain bike down to the right details can be worth a lot of money. But it is not unknown for a complete retro mountain bike to sell for a higher price if the bike is split up in separate parts mostly because everyone have their own dream spec in mind.
Restoring a mountain bike also leave a moral issue, a mountain bike is meant to be enjoyed off road in gnarly terrain. But if you spent a lot of cash on the perfect bike or have built up a collection of vintage mountain bikes you may not be so keen on getting your collection dirty and scratched. Garage queens are a phenomenon in the collecting circles of bicycles, a garage queen is the perfect bike permanently parked in your man cave, garage or living room. They may occasionally see a yearly ride on the sunniest day on fine asphalt and gravel roads, but other than that day they are supposed to capture a piece of time and hold it forever as a time capsule.
The most fun aspect of collecting and restoring vintage mountain bikes is finding the right parts for your build. It is not uncommon that parts for a special bike have come from all over the world and many have no rush in finding a special part in the right color and size.
Finding the right mountain bike part in the right color, size and model year can take years but in the end most serious vintage mountain bike fans approve it is worth it in the long run when their favourite vintage mountain bike is "just right".
John Herbold is the backup maintainer of Vintage MTB Parts. In his spare time he watches vintage Grundig MTB VHS racing tapes and goes for gnarly downhill racing at the local amateur tracks.

Mountain Bike Question?
I'm looking for a mountain bike around $500. I intend to do some trail riding and also ride it to work. I went to the three shops in town, all very nice, and I got a number of different recommendations.
Those are:
Bianchi Doss 5100 http://www.bianchiusa.com/bikes/mtb-off-road/doss-5100/
Specialized Hardrock Sport
Trek 4300 http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/mountain_hardtail/4_series/4300/
I know there are other brands out there, but unless they are vastly superior I'd like to stick with one of these three. So what would you recommend and why?
Thanks!
the 4300... trek has the best warranty repair process. Easy to fix on the side of the road too.. one major thing I would think about though is going with the 4300 disc... it will save you headache in the long run.. and for commuting it's 100% safer... just think... it take 3 revolutions of the wheel for a standard brake pad on a V style brake to shed water and start to stop. but only 1/4 rev to shed water from a disk brake... and that my friend could possibly save your life! Just something to keep in mind..
