An electric bike or e-bike most closely resembles a normal bicycle with a motor and battery to aid the cyclist in mastering hills and carrying heavy loads. Depending on the battery, terrain and other conditions, the range of an e-bike can be 10-40 miles before a recharge is needed. An electric bike works by assisting the cyclist with pedaling with a motor attached to the pedals. It works best when the cyclist pedals though it can also do the pedaling for an exhausted cyclist.
By law, the motor is limited to 750 watts of power and maximum speed cannot exceed 20 miles per hour. More and more people are considering an electric bike as an alternate form of transportation for running errands and short commutes to work. With the assistance of an electric motor to help with pedaling, the commuter is not as hot and sweaty when arriving to work.
There are several options available to the interested person from a kit which can easily be attached to the normal bicycle to a specially built bicycle ranging in price from $500 to $3000. For more value for the money, the best option is to buy a kit and install it yourself. Some motors, due to the extra weight, require a sturdier frame and tires than normal bicycles. Check with the manufacturer for correct frame requirements. Some of the newer models hide the motor and battery in the frame and run silently.
An electric bike can work independently of cyclist efforts by activating a switch or the cyclist can pedal normally without activating the motor to conserve the battery. The most efficient battery is the Lithium battery which recharges using very little electricity but can be expensive. The Lead battery requires a sturdier bicycle due to the extra weight but is less expensive. In this case, more power would be needed to carry the extra weight therefore it is not as efficient.
Due to the restrictions by law, the operator of an electric bike does not need a driver's license, state tag or insurance and is a perfect alternative to those who have lost their license. An electric bike can be mounted on the front of buses for longer commutes and the cyclist does not have to worry about long walks to the bus stop.
How does an electric bike work? It works with the aid of a motor and battery that can be activated to assist the bicyclist in climbing hills and maintaining speed. It can be used to replace pedaling, stand alone pedaling or simply to assist the weary cyclist. Electric bikes are gaining popularity all over the world and are an energy-saving alternative to automobiles.

Bikes And Your Life
One look at the modern roads say it all. Inevitable traffic jams, smoke, noise, and air pollution are adamant, not to mention accidents left and right.
Cars take thousands of lives each day worldwide in automobile accidents. Some are results of driving under the influence of drugs or alcoholic beverages, while some are just too tired to be on the road. Instead of heading off to a place for some rest, the drivers will continue driving, so they are most likely prone to accidents.
Automobiles are also harmful to the environment. Cars leak liquids, and owners drive off without wiping the stain, leaving it for wildlife to taste. How many animals fall prey to these vehicles and become road kills in an instant?
Humanists, environmentalists, and animal lovers alike now have the solution for all the death, pollution, and killings. The answer comes with two wheels - bikes and how they can save your life.
Why You Should Start Using Bikes
No pollution is involved with cycling. It does not emit smoke, leak liquids, and is very quiet. Bikers also contribute to saving a space in a crowded parking lot as more than a dozen bicycles can fit in one slot of a car.
For pet lovers, you can tie your pet's leash on your handlebar and pedal to an easy pace so that your furry friend can run beside you. It cuts out the work for you.
For your pockets, cycling can help you save more money. No insurance has to be paid annually, and no license is required. No fuel bills either as your bike will run to the speed of your pedaling. The maintenance costs about a quarter of what you spend on cars per annum, and a bicycle, once well taken care of, can last for years, if not decades.
In a crowded mall for instance, your bicycle can be parked anywhere. You don't have to roam the parking area for agonizing minutes after minutes with the stress building up. You can just park it on one corner, secure it with your lock, and leave it to be ready for you until you're done shopping.
How Your Health will Benefit from Using Bikes
According to a reliable source, a cyclist's fitness level is equal to his health ten years ago. It can make you feel younger as you are still well in control of your limbs by the exercise, giving you power and building your stamina.
Irked by the way motorcycles pass by your car in the midst of a traffic jam during the rush hour? It can give you that same sense of power. Now, you can weave in and out of traffic, so you'll reach your destination faster.
It also reduces the risk of heart disease as your heart is healthy and receives proper exercise. In addition, it builds up your muscle legs to give you more power and strength. If you're a soccer player, then at least now you've got that strong kick you've always wanted.

My mountain bicycle has increasing tightness at the crank while pedalling? What is the cause?
Over the the past few riding sessions, the crank of my MTB has increasing friction/tightness while pedalling (greatest while reverse pedalling). What can be the cause and what is the remedy? It is a high performance Cannondale mountain bike.
Never ever use WD-40 on any part of you bike.
If you have been riding in areas that contain fine dust or crushed limestone and it collects on the down tube of your bike it probably got into the bottom bracket bearings. You will need the remove the crank arms and clean and regrease the bottom bracket. There are some sites that will shop you how to do this.
