Riding a bicycle is the most economical means of transportation available. A bicycle does not need fuel, requires little maintenance, lasts for many years, doesn't pollute, provides aerobic exercise and does not require a license. Below you will find guidelines for buying a used road bicycle that will help people who are looking for cheaper modes of transportation.
Even though the thought of having a brand new bicycle complete with a warranty is appealing, it's possible to find a good quality used bicycle that can be bought for less than what's spent in a week on groceries. Used bicycles that are still of good working order are not difficult to find and bicycles in general are long lasting and barely even need maintenance.
The best place to find used road bicycles is the local bicycle shop. The discount bicycles available for sale at local bike stores should have already been inspected, adjusted, and checked to make sure they are in good working order. Private sales through newspapers, websites, garage sales and flea markets are another good option, so long as the prospective purchaser feels comfortable inspecting the bicycle first.
When you check out used road bicycles you need to evaluate their main parts. Begin with the frame. Dents and scrapes on a frame are generally the result of simple usage. On the other hand, if a frame is cracked or has a bend in it, you are probably looking at a grave structural defect which could cause the frame to collapse under the weight of the bicyclist. A failure of either frame, handlebars or braking mechanism can result in a bruising, crippling, or even fatal accident.
The handlebars should fit snugly in the steering tube of the frame. If they wiggle it can be dangerous. Once you are satisfied as to the condition of the frame, handlebars and seat, check out the brakes. While standing next to the bike, push it forward a little and pull each brake lever separately to see how they work.
Brakes in both the front and the rear should be able to brake the wheel firmly enough to make a full and immediate stop when full pressure is applied. Try this same thing while you are on the bicycle, but take care not to throw yourself from the bike by applying too much pressure. Any brake pads that have become worn out need to be replaced.
Subsequently, inspect the drivetrain. Wiggle the gear sets by the pedals, along with the gear set fastened to the rear axle. Side-to-side movement of the gears or the pedals means damaged bearings. Inspect the chain for some odd indications of damage. Inspect the gear shifting equipment to ensure every gear can be engaged in a precise manner.
Finally, inspect the wheels and tires. Wheels should be round, not oval. Grab the spokes. The spokes should be even and firmly seated. Spin the wheel while standing directly overhead, looking straight down. A good wheel should show very little or no side-to-side motion as it spins. If the bike passes your inspection, take it for a quick ride before making the final purchasing decision.

This is what the actual state of progress is. So disc brakes are the state of the art at the moment. Nearly every new car has disc brakes, all the formula 1 guys use the disc brake system and also the bikes are getting modern with using disc brakes.
Here are only a few benefits of disc brakes:
- Of course the performance. It is the most important thing of a braking system. In an emergency situation you have to stop your vehicle immediately to avoid a crash or even more.

To be more specific I'll explain you the difference between rim brakes known as V-brakes and mtb disc brakes of a bicycle.
Rim brakes will brake on the rim of a bike's wheel. The main problem is that the rim will get dirty while riding your bike. This will reduce the performance of your braking system. By riding off road the wheel can bounce against the brake pad and this is bad.
The disc brakes are installed in the middle of the wheel. Mud can't rally reach so high to make the rotor dirty. Also the wheel is fixed in the middle and so there the disc won't bounce against the pad. You will always have high performance with your disc brakes.
You can see that disc brakes becoming more and more popular by this time no matter for what vehicle. So upgrade now if you haven't already.

What is a nice hardtail mtb for about $600 or less?
My little bmx isn't good for riding on bumpy trails or going up hills so i was looking at mtbs.
I am looking for a 26" bike. I don't care about gearing that much as long as I can switch from something to go up a hill easily and a something to descend them really fast. If possible I want a disk brake in front. I don't care about them in back as long as it has brakes there at all.
