I got off the phone with my grandmother last night, feeling really upset. It's no secret that I come from a large family. And keeping up with all six of my siblings can be a serious challenge. As the oldest, it's also strange to really navigate the new dynamics of my relationship with each of them, since I no longer live at home. It just so happens that as I've gotten older, I realize more and more that I'm responsible for the relationships I have with my family; sometimes I get wrapped up in my personal life. So, I suppose it was only a matter of time before something happened that would bring me right back down to reality.
I was informed that my youngest sister (she is 13 years old) was punched in the eye at school. Also, she is most likely guilty of stealing money from my grandparents. I have always been my sisters keepers so to speak, so I took the news pretty hard. At 13 she lives alone (minus her two older sisters) with her grandparents because as life has dealt it, she was born to parents who have proved to be nothing but inadequate. I can't even imagine what it must be like for her; to have to live through her adolescence in the face of some seriously hardcore familial issues. This just makes me think of the colliding factors of life, how can someone still so young harbor such sad problems? Furthermore, what do children like my sister really mean to our communities? That time of anyone's life is certainly a strange one.
What then is adolescence? It's literal definition describes it as, "The transitional period between puberty and adulthood in human development, extending mainly over the teen years, and terminating legally when the age of majority is reached; youth." Of course that makes sense. Examining the effects and expectations of these 'adolescents' it's possible to delve deeper into what is being referred to as 'human development.' Adolescence ushers in a transition in a child's life where society begins to place demands on them. Observing the politics of 'Honors' or "AP (Advanced Placement)" classes, one thing is quite clear. Our system seems to brainwash kids into believing that if they don't meet the necessary requirements each quarter or each year, it will result in them being placed in the 'stupid' class. And if they don't get into the 'smart' class, they will never be able to go to college, and that will result in them being 'losers' for the rest of their lives.
Have you ever noticed how important our kids are to the economy? And how their education 'preps' them for adulthood. It essentially means being prepped for consumerism. My goodness, adolescents are powerful economic forces. They facilitate the crazes behind back to school shopping, or just seasonal shopping in general; holiday shopping; teen Stars like Justin Bieber; and technological frenzies. (Can you explain why 13 year olds are toting blackberries? Or, why they can point out an iPod and not a squash?) The fact of the matter is this atmosphere reaches a deeper subconscious level on children who are least capable of understanding it. Kids who cannot participate in these consumerist trends are left feeling inherently inadequate and immediately isolated...even accentuated. Those who do participate believe that this is the way it's supposed to be for a good life, and are left unable to understand the former. By the time these children have turned 18 we demand that they either be in school or have a job. If they are not doing one of those two things it can be assumed they are losers or criminals. This would most likely explain the findings by Mintel International Group Ltd. that found "Young adults between 18-34 represent 30.9% of all adults in the US and over 70 million customers."
In my opinion those statistics are incredibly telling of the priorities of society. After 5th grade, students are in middle school, supposedly learning math, science, history, and English. Then comes high school where they are learning the same things over and over again. We wonder why adolescents are troubled, youth is prolonged, and adults are more divisive then ever (not to mention proud of it). Maybe it's because we have allowed them to be trained as such. Teaching priorities refuse to address social issues. The classroom itself highlights its diversity, pretending as if the social status of every student isn't exposed in some way. These are known as cliques, and they are based upon the merits of consumerism.
If this wasn't the case, why are charter schools an issue, why is bullying an issue, why have graduation rates decreased? If this wasn't the case, teachers would be paid on the basis of their effect, class sizes wouldn't be more than 15 per class, and kids instead would be going to college at 15 or 16 years old. We would actually be challenging the minds of our children at a consistent rate, so that they can study what they showed initial interest in from the very beginning. Encouraging and honoring the talents of children is a full proof way of inspiring them. There would be no time for our kids to indulge and obsess over materials that don't equate stability. They will have plenty of time for that once adulthood is reached, and maybe before hand they will learn that it's possible to own things without things owning them. Children are born innocent, adults are the ones who corrupt them. If this country wants lasting jobs, entrepreneurs, real ingenuity, and committed active citizens, then perhaps the investment would be in the growth and expansion of the minds of our students, not on their toy stands.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNj3IFkKCOw
lyrics:
Chorus
1 2 3 4 get your woman on the floor
Gotta Gotta get up to get down
Gotta Gotta get up to get down
Rhyme 1:
What up everybody so glad you're here
it's Coolio wit' the flow back in your ear
this ain't a fantastic voyage but I'm still on a mission
to see if I can get your attention
Now I wanst to drop some information
just a little additive to your education
I live my life by the code of the funk
600 watt amps, 18's in the trunk
When I'm on the street, you gotta feel my beat, so
throw your hands up if you're down with the C
double O, L, I, O with the flow
I'm lookin' for the party, so let a nigga know
1 2 3, it's like A B C
if hip hop didn't pay, I'd rap for free
slide, slide, but that's that past
I got sumpin' brand new for that ass
-- Chorus --
Rhyme 2:
If you got beefed, then nigga eat a porkchop
once I get it goin', you know it don't stop
I break like dandylocks, panties drop,
from hood to hood, block to block
Help, I need somebody
to get it goin' on in this party
baby you can do it, take your time do it right,
we can drink some yak and do it all damn night
My name ain't Wanda, but I'll rock your world
get more bounce than a jerry curl
too many looky loos be lookin' for clues
there's a party goin' on, now whatcha gonna do, so
Grab your partner, do se do,
if you don't know who it is, it's Coolio,
slide, slide, but that's the past,
I got sumpin' brand new for that ass
-- Chorus --
Rhyme 3:
Push, push, in the bush
but don't step on my toes cuz you might get smushed
it's the brother from around the way
and what I say I been comin' on three like Dr. Dre
Comin' at 'em with pattern an' a fresh pair of atoms
I hope you don't trip cuz I don't want to have to get 'em
so move your body baby, drive the homeys crazy,
the way you shake that ass, always amaze me
Ain't no party like a west coast party
cuz a west coast party don't stop
so when you see a young nigga
in a Chevy hittin' switches, then you gotta give the nigga his props
I got size in my rise and the motion for your ocean
Coolio got the potion to kick the party open
slide, slide, but that's the past
I got sumpin' brand new for that ass.
-- Chorus extended, fade out --
